our kids above all, but it's really for all of us, living and working together, from for and near,

toward a goal of excellence for the students and their surroundings, which we all share.

Here's What's Happening:

Foundation funds and help from many others brought new

Why Does the Foundation Exist?

Interest in the Foundation and excitement for its potential , now being seen in recent projects, is mounting among alumni and many others. Since its formation in March 2012 the Foundation has reo ceived over $45,000 and many of the funds have already been put to work, as told in this newsletter.

Some ask why the Foundation exists to fund these projects when a public school system's primary funding source is through taxes. A legitimate question. While tax revenues are doing much good for Grenora Public School students, those funds are limited and can't always cover every cost. Teachers, administration, the community and alumni seek to do even more to improve students' learning experience and life in general. School foundations across North Dakota have been formed, just as the Grenora Public School Foundation, in an effort to further nurture our children to be productive, well-adjusted members of society in a competitive job market. That's why your Foundation asks for and appreciates your tax deductible donation .

And farmers, do you know about the tax benefits of donating grain? In addition to monetary funding, some projects involve some physical work, while other efforts could use your creative ideas. If you'd like to learn more, share ideas, or become involved in any way, contact us at the Foundation. We need many interested persons to join in this effort to help it grow and become even more successful for years to come.

How Are Funds Used?

A dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground and basketball court was held September 13, 2013 after a long fundroising effort. In fact, GHS junior Thomas Field and sophomore Chelsea Berg, who started selling raffle tickets back when they were only in the second

and third grade, each cut the ribbon as part of the festivities.

The Dream Playground

Grenora School's new playground and basketball court have truly been a labor of love, a testament of teamwork and generous giving. Fundraising started years ago with several very successful annual raffle of quilts made by Carol Berg and tickets sold by elementary students and staff. These funds were a convincing great start to show just how high the kid's enthusiasm was for this new playground.

But the dream of such a playground was met with the reality of cost. Further estimates in 2011 put a price tag of over $75,000 on the project. Additional funding sources were sorely needed. School staff went to work to find those sources and were uplifted with an overwhelming generous response. With grant writing help from the Grenora Ambulance, a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of ND "Sponsor Recess" grant was awarded and others would soon jump on the bandwagon toward success. Gre

nora's Alvin T. Larson Post of the American Legion gave generously and Burke Divide Electric Cooperative's "Round Up" program, funded by its member/customers for such purpose, kicked in toward the effort. Grenora School Foundation funds were aided by numerous other donors who gave directly to finally reach the goal that had been sought for so long. With the expertise of Dakota Fence of Williston to install the many intricate parts, the colorful and safe playground that was the dream of so many had finally become a reality and was dedicated at a ceremony September 13, 2013, with all students and teachers, the donors and others of the community present on the playground site.

Included in the celebration that September day was the finished effort of a new basketball court. Milton Schenstad and Richard Peterson removed the old asphalt which was replaced by cement work, headed up by Tom Enander, Lee Garaas and Mike Berg, with help from many others. Landscaping around the court remains as a final project to be completed.

Housing for Our Teachers

Foundation funds have helped your school respond to a teacher housing strain brought on by a growing Grenora community. With other properties being sold or rented largely due to increased oil activity, affordable housing - housing of any kind - was nearly impossible for new teachers to find. Grenora School has stepped in to provide housing options to them. In 2009 the school board approved the purchase of three lots on East 4'" Street and a 3 bedroom modular home was purchased and placed on that property the next year. Another 3 bedroom home on this street was purchased in 2011, and in 2012 a 4 plex (3 - one bedroom apartments and 1 - two bedroom apartment) was built on the remaining lots. Foundation funds, combined with oil impact Brants from sur

rounding counties and from the state have saved the day for our teachers who have occupied 100% of the available living spaces from the time they were first built. Community support or hOUSing right in Grenora saves much time and resources for our teachers who would otherwise face the strain of a daily commute. Instead, these homes allow our teachers to become more active ly involved in their school community by living comfortably among their students and their oarents as fellow citizens.
