FACTS AND FIGURES

•16000 MWTOTAL GENERATION

•20500 MWTOTAL DEMAND

•4500 MWTOTAL SHORTAGE

PRIMARY SOURCES OF ENERGY AVAILBALE IN PAKISTAN

THERMAL…..66%

HYDRO-ELECTRIC….31%

NUCLEAR…..3%

6

WHY THE NEED OF ALTERNATIVE SOURCE..??

• Hence 66% of the total production is dependent upon Thermal Energy.

• Core elements of thermal energy are :

a) Gas

b) Fossil fuels

c) Steam• Lacking the technologies, Pakistan is not the

good producer of any above core elements.• This results in lack of electricity generation.

GLOBAL WARMING…A BIG ISSUE Burning fossil fuels has

increased atmospheric pollution.

Vehicle exhausts contribute to

acid rain more so than power

stations burning coal.

The carbon stored in fossil fuels

is released as carbon dioxide

when they are burnt – this leads

to the green house effect and

global warming

HOW LONGER WE CAN DEPEND UPON FOSSIL FUELS

OIL HAS REMAINING

LIFE OF40 TO 50

YEARS ONLY

The demand for energy has increased in tremendous proportions in the last few decades in Pakistan; & is expected to increase further in the coming years.

The increase in cost of fossil fuel and the various environmental problems of large scale power generation have lead to increased appreciation of the electricity generation from non-conventional sources.

Wind and Solar energies are the possible clean and low cost renewable resources available in the country.

Wind power provides opportunity to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuel and at the same time expands the power supply capacity to remote locations where grid expansion is not practical.

Wind energy is an ideal renewable energy because:

1. it is a pollution-free, infinitely sustainable form of energy

2. it doesn’t require fuel

3. it doesn’t create greenhouse gasses it doesn’t produce toxic or radioactive waste.
