704.3 Protection of the primary structural frame other than columns. Members of the primary structural frame other than columns are required to have protection to achieve a fire-resistance rating and support more than two
floors or one floor and roof, or support a load bearing wall or a non-loadbearing wall more than 2 stories high, shall be provided with individualencasement protection by protecting them on all sides for the full length, including connections to other structural members, withe materials having therequired fire-resistance rating.
707.3.1 Fire Barriers at Shaft Enclosures shall comply with the following:Section 713.4, 1 hour rating for less than 4 stories.Section 713.6 Exterior walls at shaft enclosures, fire resistance rating shall not apply.
712.1.8 Two Story Openings. Permitted if it complies with all of the items below: 1) Does not connect more than two stories. 2) Does not contain a stair or ramp required as part of the required means of egress in Chapter 10. 3) Does
not penetrate a horizontal assembly that separates fire areas or smoke barriers. 4) Is not concealed within the building construction. 5) Is not open to acorridor in Group I and R occupancies. 6) Is not open to a corridor on nonsprinklered floors in any occupancy. 7) Is separated from the floor openingsserving other floors by construction conforming to required shaft enclosures.
713.11 Enclosure at the bottom. 1) Shafts that do not extend to the bottom of the building or structure shall, be enclosed at the lowest level with construction of the same fire resistance
rating as the lowest floor thru which the shaft passes, but not less than the rating of the shaft. 2) They shall terminate in a room having a use related tothe purpose of the shaft. The room shall be separated from the remainder of the building by fire barriers not less than equal to the protection required atthe shaft or the room shall be protected by an automatic sprinkler system. 3) They shall be protected by approved fire dampers at the lowest floor levelwithin the shaft enclosure.
713.12 Enclosure at the top. Shaft enclosure shall be sealed to the underside of the roof deck or shall be enclosed at the top with the same fire resistance ratingas the topmost floor penetrated by the shaft, but not less than the fire-resistance rating required for the shaft enclosure.
