Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Adopt – A – Hydrant What is a fire hydrant (AKA a fireplug)? A fire hydrant is defined as an ac/ve fire protec/on measure and a source of water provided in most urban, suburban, and rural areas. These devices are connected to the municipal water supply to enable firefighters to receive water and assist in ex/nguishing fires. How many fire hydrants are in the City of Greensburg? Currently, there are 324 fire hydrants in the City of Greensburg. Why are fire hydrants important? Fire hydrants are an essen/al part of being able to ex/nguish fires quickly. They must be located in an area that they can be easily seen and accessible to firefighters. Greensburg fire engines only carry 500 gallons of water so it is vital for firefighters to connect to hydrants to supply them with enough water to ex/nguish a fire. What is the fee to adopt a hydrant? The fee is $25.00 dollar fee per hydrant adopted. This money is used to purchase a High Visibility marker to be aKached to “your” fire hydrant. The purpose of this marker is to provide our firefighters with quick loca/on, even when hydrants are buried in snow or covered with seasonal vegeta/on overgrowth. Why are fire hydrants different colors? The base color for all fire hydrants in and around the City of Greensburg is RED. They are painted this color to increase visibility. The top and caps (some/mes referred to as ears) are painted a different color so firefighters can iden/fy the size of the water line that a par/cular fire hydrant is connected to: BLUE = 1500+ gallons per minute flow GREEN = 1000 – 1499 gallons per minute flow ORANGE = 500 – 999 gallons per minute flow RED = below 500 gallons per minute flow What else can I do to help with my hydrant? You can also assist by keeping the area around the hydrant clear of brush and debris, in the winter keep the snow shoveled around the hydrant, and to make sure the hydrant is properly painted and the HY-VIZ marker is visible. We ask that you contact the fire department if there is a leak or damage to the hydrant or the HY-VIZ marker, if the hydrant needs painted, or if you need assistance in maintaining your hydrant. Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Adopt – A – Hydrant Application Form

The Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department has devised a plan to help maintain

and identify fire hydrants throughout our city. Due to the number of fire hydrants located in Greensburg, we are asking for help from the community to make sure our fire hydrants are visible and in good working order. For a fee of $25.00 per hydrant you can adopt your very own City of Greensburg Fire Hydrant. Once the adoption form has been received, a member of the fire department will inspect the hydrant to make sure it is in good working order and/or if it needs painted, and attach the high visibility marker. Once the inspection and installation is complete, you will receive an official adoption certificate per hydrant (via email). After adoption we ask that you take good care of “your hydrant”. You can do this by keeping the area around the hydrant clear of brush and debris, in the winter keep the snow shoveled around the hydrant, and to make sure the hydrant is properly painted and the HY-VIZ marker is visible. We ask that you contact the fire department if there is a leak or damage to the hydrant or the HY-VIZ marker, if the hydrant needs painted, or if you need assistance in maintaining your hydrant.
