Support SouthSide GreenSboro

The city of Greensboro emerged from the Civil War eager to move

ahead. It welcomed newcomers from the North for their capital and skills. Thanks to Northern Quakers, freed blacks began the Southside neighborhood of Warnersville, south of Lee Street and west of Elm Street.

The pioneer black churches such as, St. Matthews UM, St. James Presbyterian, Providence Baptist and Bethel AME, had their beginnings here, as did Bennett College. Known as the new home for freed slaves in the 1800’s, the heartbeat for business in the 1970’s and a war zone in the 1990’s, Southside Greensboro

has seen its share of ups and downs. A community so rich in history, we ask the question is Southside Greensboro depressed, recessed or revitalized in 2013.

The answer to that question is all based on your perspective.

It is the opinion of many that this once thriving community, rich in culture and history for blocks, has seen better days. Major streets particularly W. Lee Street (an outer lining street to the Southside) and Randleman Rd (the artery

that runs through the Southside) have suffered for years from lack of new business development. The pocketbooks and dinner tables of the Southside community in some way reflect this trend. Many of its residents are living at or below the poverty line according to the 2010 census report. Public housing over the years have aided to what many consider the downturn of the community. However, in the last five years this writer has seen something different happening in the Southside district…Revitalization! This resurgence was assisted by federal funds, community organization and a class of people raised on the foundation of family.

If you take the time to look around this inspiring neighborhood, you will see and inclusion of the Downtown Greenway along the Hampton Homes Sub-division. New roads and shops are popping up along W. Lee St, S. Elm-Eugene St and Randleman Rd. Southside Greensboro continues to stand as a symbol of hope just as it did for the newly freed slaves of a young city. As Southside continues to show signs of improvement, show your support by living, shopping, and socializing in this revitalized area of the city.

JACQUI GRAVES

JACQUI GRAVES REALTY & ASSOCIATES

Some folks will claim that owning real estate can be a curse or the best investment decision they ever made.

These contrasting opinions are well warranted. The past five years have shown us how unsettling the real estate market has become. Values of property went up and up, then crashed and are now moving back up. The equity (the money value of a property) many folk counted on was wiped out, and depending on when they bought, might never come back. While all this was happening job security has become a thing of the past leading to foreclosures, short sales and loan modifications.

The vast majority of people still believe purchasing real estate for your personal home or income producing property is an investment. For it to be an investment most buyers strive for long-term ownership (5 years or more). Long-term ownership is the key to earning wealth. If you own for the long term, you pay down your mortgage or pay it off, property appreciates (value increases) and as the owner you get an opportunity to take advantage of tax credits-mortgage interest deduction.

Preserving the benefit and the ability of American families to own a home or invest in income property is of critical importance to US lawmakers in 2013. The House Bill signed to avert the fiscal cliff extended tax measures to property owners only confirms real estate is an Investment!

I’ve summarized some of the recent benefits as reported in Realtor Magazine.

Mortgage cancellation relief is extended for another year. Households that have mortgage debt forgiven by a lender in 2013 as a result of modification (mortgage terms changed), short sale (lender agrees to accept a pay-off less than what’s remaining on mortgage), or foreclosure (property taken for non payment of mortgage)

will not have to pay tax on the amount forgiven.

Mortgage insurance premiums remain a tax deduction. Tax filers making less than $110,000 who pay for mortgage insurance can deduct the cost of their premiums on their 2012 and 2013 tax returns.

15-year straight line cost recovery on leasehold improvements in extended. For qualified leasehold improvements on commercial properties, 15 year depreciation is extended through 2013 and made retroactive to cover 2012.

Energy efficiency tax credit remains in force a 10 percent tax credit up to $500. For homeowners who make energy efficiency improvements to an existing home is extended through 2013 and made retroactive to cover 2012.

As the real estate market improves, the American Dream is still alive. In 2013 owning real estate does not have to be a curse. It can be an asset and not a liability.

Real Estate Ownership is the American Dream and a Path to Wealth Building!

The story of one man’s quest to achieve greatness

by Angel Babie PennFreelance Writer [email protected]

Greensboro Live would like to introduce you to Mr. William Lee. William has been a creative innovator since the day he was born. While growing up as a child, he developed his natural talents as an artist by drawing and painting.

Moving through life as an entrepreneur, he latched onto the business world and became the consummate businessman.

William Lee is a young man called with a purpose, armed with a dream, and equipped with a fierce amount of dedication. A native of Reidsville, North Carolina he began his professional education at Rockingham Community College and transferred to The Art Institute of Charlotte, North Carolina. The skills and knowledge he attained from college lead him to pursue his dreams in graphic design. However, the fuel to fulfill his dream as a successful businessman came from reading personal development books, receiving training by elite mentors who encouraged him and being around the right people at the right time.

Being a leader in his community has always been a strong desire for William even as a teenager. Today he donates his time for motivational speaking by mentoring and counseling the youth in local churches and schools. He learned very early and understood the importance of leading by example, “It’s not only what you say but it is what you do… William tells Greensboro Live, that’s one of the most important things if you want to be a great leader, don’t just create followers create more leaders!”

William knows what it takes to be successful and that is simply keeping God first, making the right decisions, and having dedication and determination. He is the founder of Lee Graphix PR and Design Group (Lee Graphix PR) founded in 2006, a leading company in every market that designs for multiple companies, celebrities as well as authors and motivational speakers. Visit www.LeeGraphixPR.com

William has not always been the type of man that he is today. He grew up with little direction and virtually no understanding of business. His

mother and grandmother Ruby taught him to have a strong work ethic. From there, his desire to be ambitious skyrocketed. In high school, he and two friends put together their talents and resources and started a T-shirt business. Shortly thereafter, William independently began selling shoes. After just a few weeks William, profited hundreds of dollars in sales. He knew then he had something special, it was called: Talent.

William went from doing great in school to doing terrible in school. He was a high school dropout, but that didn’t stop him, he overcame and went to college WITHOUT a diploma. However, eventually William returned back to school at RCC and proudly marched and received his High School diploma. The notable change in him came when his mother started crying because she couldn’t figure out why her son was acting the way he did. William’s life drastically changed and he decided to make a difference and prove he could change.

Now William takes every opportunity he gets to reach out to the youth. He loves to plant positive seeds in children, pouring out hope, inspiration, and love into their lives. He wants to empower youth by letting them know that they can overcome adversity and be whatever they put their minds to. William helps others learn and rebound from their mistakes and live a valuable lifestyle. He is a living testimony and

as the first to attend college in his family he continues to be a conqueror of life while accomplishing his goals. William was raised having a foundation centered in the Lord. His mission is to leave a Godly legacy for his children and the following generations when he becomes married and has his own family one day.

In 2011, William was nominated, along with six additional great men, for THE JUST FOR HIM AFFAIR. He was blessed to receive the award as “The Hardest Working Man in North Carolina.” He was truly humbled and grateful for the recognition and he understands the hard work his fellow nominees put in, knowing they equally qualified to receive such an award.

Currently, William’s book is scheduled to be released entitled “Breaking The Mold” WHY WASTE TALENT? “Make a Difference and Prove It Can Be Done by Your Decisions, Dedication and Determination. His upcoming book will inspire, motivate and change the lives of many people.

Perhaps you find yourself strolling down S. Elm Street in Greensboro, enjoying the scenery and watching as people move about. Sitting there is a building so elegant, so reminiscent of Harlem, yet holding the

southern charm of Charleston, that it almost feels as if you have been transported to another place and time.

The beauty simply draws you closer; the big beautiful statuesque windows entice you to take a peek inside. The colors, seating, pictures, and every small detail is magnificent. You just have to go in. As you approach the door, you realize that you have stumbled upon downtown’s newest gem...Harlem Bar & Bistro.

Owner Clarence J. Boston, a native of Reidsville, NC, has always dreamed of owning his own restaurant. Known for his impeccable taste and business knowledge, he made sure that his vision was executed precisely to the smallest of details.

His personal touch is reflected in the outer and inner décor of the establishment. He is bringing something different to Elm Street, a different taste, a different look and a different way to socialize. Clarence is no newcomer to building and developing a business brand, and he knows what it takes to make a business successful. As a result he chose renowed Chef Yul to perepare and create great food for the resturuant.

Chef Yul creates jaw dropping, mouthwatering dishes that are sure to please even the most finicky eater. A few of the many decadent dishes served at the Bistro are Seafood Gumbo, Fried or Grilled Tilapia, Shrimp, Scallops, Crab Cakes, Oyster Rockefeller, Alligator Bites and so much more.

Harlem Bar & Bistro offers you a fine dining experience. So, whether you are looking for a great place to have a business lunch or dinner friends and family, this is the place to be. Monday thru Saturday lunch is served from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm; dinner is served Monday thru Thursday from 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday until 2am.

Clarence Boston has done a great job offering his patrons a beautiful place, great food, along with an ambiance to desire. It has already created a buzz throughout the Triad given downtown a new hotspot to talk about.

It seems as if it was destiny that two young ladies from the same hometown and very similar backgrounds would have a chance meeting that would later develop into a dual partnership. Two little girls, two visions,

now flourishing into one very real “reality” for two awesome women.

“Versatyle” born Betty Jackson comes from a musical background. Her mother Mrs. Shirley Clinton-McLean was a singer and a song/play writer. Her father Mr. Jerome Jackson was a song and poetry writer. Her uncle, the father

of P-Funk, Mr. George Clinton also influenced her desire to pursue a musical career.

Versatyle knew early on that music would be her lifelong passion. During her high school years she performed in several plays, various shows, and other events. In later years she began to practice earnestly, perfecting her singing and song-writing skills. She continues to perform throughout the triad area, at several local venues, with other bands and also as a solo artist.

Versatyle had dreams of doing more than singing and writing, she wanted to offer more to her audiences. Her vision was to bring together several artists on one stage, highlight the music of many, and create a show production with a cohesive and relevant theme. With this in mind she decided to create her own company, SoulfulSultry Versatyle Productions.

“Angel Babie Penn” grew up in a family where music in the home was a constant source of family entertainment. Her father Mr. Henry Penn Jr. was a singer, songwriter and musician. Her grandfather Mr. Lorenzo Wilson was a

singer and guitar player who performed with the Jackson Methodist Church men’s choir during the late 60’s and early 70’s on WEAL’s live weekly gospel segment located in Greensboro, NC.

Angel began singing in church at the age of four and quickly became a favorite of the congregation at her home church. In later years she sung with “The Voices of Gospel”, a choir founded and lead by her father. Throughout high school, she performed with her school chorus, sung in plays, and performed at other community events.

In later years, Angel suffered with numerous throat issues which eventually led to her having her tonsils and several lesions removed. Complications arose with that first surgery, which caused her to develop massive scar tissue, and required that she undergo extensive surgery for a second time. Her recovery was successful but her vocals took a beaten. She reluctantly accepted that she no longer could sing the way she had before and decided that she would put all her efforts into supporting and helping others whose ambition was to sing. After years of mentoring and helping others, she decided to create AA Exposure Inc., which would provide clients with event planning, coordination, and promotion.

Ironically, these two women met in a musical setting after which a casual friendship developed. Upon hearing Versatyle sing Angel became a fan and a supporter. Versatyle was just getting back into the music scene after being away for a period of time. Versatyle began singing at various events and participating in area competitions and Angel would be there front and center screaming, supporting, and taking pictures.

Although the two of them had talked about music on several occasions and Versatyle knew of AA Exposure Inc., she never really understood the concept behind the company. It was during a show for another local artist that she realized that Angel was there in a work capacity. She was so impressed by what she saw; she then asked Angel if she could assist her in one of her upcoming shows, “The Cotton Club”. Angel signed on to assist with promotion, planning, and coordination. The two of them worked great together and the show was a home run. The audience loved all the artists, the music, and was asking for more.

Versatyle then asked Angel to come back and work on her second show which would be, “Motown Through The Years”. Several complications arose during preparations; however the two of them worked together and produced a show that Barry Gordy himself would have been proud of.

Both ladies began to share and express their visions with

one another and realized that they coincided with one another. It was then that they decided to merge an alliance. Versatyle wanted to become more than a singer and an artist. She wanted to also to get into show production. Angel had the production experience from working and performing with her father and grandfather, and she also held several years of planning, coordinating, and promoting under her belt. Angel loved working directly with the artist and Versatyle had the gift to sing, yet she also embodied the passion, ambition and dreams needed to expand into something much greater.

It was in this instance that SoulfulSultry Versatyle Productions and AA Exposure Inc. became a duo, separate entities, yet, working together as one. Together Versatyle and Angel plan to go all the way. They have decided to no longer be scared or think about the “what ifs.” They are keeping their faith in God and walking the path that He has created for them. It is both their mission to work together and bring their vision to fruition and give audiences everywhere the best that they have to offer.

SoulfulSultry Versatyle Productions and AA Exposure are proud to announce their next show production, “Legends,” which will take place February 28, 2013, at Boston’s House of Jazz & Blue. Show time is at 9: 30 pm, and admission is $10.00. This show will honor musical greats Luther Vandross, Donnie Hathaway, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Rick James, Teena Marie and Donna Summers. Local artists who will be featured in this show will be Johnnie Hudson, Evin Gibson, Bobby Jaye, Trice D’Vine Wright, Toni Holden, and of course the awesome and talented “Versatyle.”

Both Versatyle and Angel would like to thank everyone for their continued love and support. We here at Greensboro Live Magazine wish them the best in all their future endeavors.

LB: My parents, I’ve been nostalgic from a very young age, mainly because I listened to music from my parent’s era, i.e., Bon Jovi, The Beatles, Luther Vandross, Patti Labelle, Sam Cooke, and many more.

GL: Who influences your music now?

LB: Classically, my all-time favorite is Luciano Pavarotti, R&B, R. Kelly, and as for Jazz, Billie Holiday, I have several influences these are just a few.

GL: LB, tell me what does “music” really mean to you?

LB: Music is what feelings sound like. Music is our laughter, our tears, our anger, our fears; it gives hope and creates dreams. It speaks what cannot be expressed; it heals the heart, soothes the mind, and gives rest.

GL: Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever heard it quite explained that way. How has your background affected your music today?

LB: It has played a role in my educational

and extra-curricular endeavors. I feel that without the early exposure, rigorous training and having discovered my love for music, I may have chosen a different path.

GL: Did you pursue any secondary education to study and enhance your knowledge of music?

LB: Yes, I hold two BFA’s, one in Music Business Management & Merchandising and the other in Music Education, both I received while studying at Winston Salem State University.

GL: That’s great; I believe in formal education and the knowledge and advantages it provides. How would you describe your personal style?

LB: I would say it’s contemporary, yet very versatile in its presentation.

GL: Other than music, is there anything else you are passionate about?

LB: Youth 24/7- There is a life that God intended for us to be a part of. It is our heart in 24/7 to help individuals find that source of life. Through the weekly Wednesday services, we come together to worship and feast on a fresh word from God to help each and every participant to become the best that God intended for us to be.

GL: Why is this cause important to you?

LB: Because lives are changed daily. Leaders are birthed through this organization. Dreams are made a reality and the impossible becomes possible.

GL: What are you doing at this moment?

LB: Right now I’m interning at Hidden Beach Records in the Artist & Repertoire department.

GL: Do you have any personal projects you are working on at this time?

LB: Yes, I’m working on a few things. I will be traveling and performing throughout Europe for the next few months but I promise you when I return you will be seeing great things from Mr. Christopher Bonner.

GL: Awesome, as you know I’m very proud of you and I’m definitely looking forward to that special magic that you bring. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with Greensboro Live and allowing us to get to know you better.

LB: Oh, it was all my pleasure, thank you!!!

At the age of 22, Christopher is now recording his R&B album to be released soon. He is currently being produced by North Cak Records-Tre Pho Productions and has been getting rave reviews with his hit single “Going Crazy”. He is currently writing his own lyrics and music to fabulous tunes such as “Going Crazy”, Paradise”, “Have U Ever” and many more. His main goal is to continue to allow God to mold, shape, and break him, so that he may remain focused with both his life and career endeavors.

As always we here at Greensboro Live Magazine wish him the best in all his future endeavors.

MUSIC CONSUMES MY SOUL

Coming from a musical family and being around music all of my life, it’s tough to vocally impress me and ignite a flame. When I first heard the voice of Mr. Christopher Bonner, I was very impressed and something was ignited in me. My impression went beyond the voice; I was also appreciative of his professionalism, ambition, and his respectful nature. For this, I asked him to sit down with me so I could find out who this young man we so fondly call “LB” really is.
