Research, Development & AdvisoryGreenlight aims to bring about change through knowledge and technology in a socially inclusive and environmentally responsible manner. We have vast local knowledge and experience acquired through on the ground presence within Mozambique and the Southern African region. Our team has established a strong international, regional and local network, both within the public sphere and private sector. These factors make it possible to structure projects and business models which are best adapted to the local context; thus ensuring a higher success rate for long term positive results.
GreenLight operates within the following areas:
• Environmental technologies. - Renewable energy, - Water, - Sanitation and - Waste management • Climate change mitigation and adaptation. • Forest resource management and conservation agriculture. • Biomass energy. • Biofuels. • Rural and peri-urban community development. • Carbon financing – CDM and voluntary market.
Our core competencies are:
• Project management. • Investment management. • Qualitative and quantitative research & analysis. • Large scale survey implementation & management. • Marketing strategy development. • Product testing and pilot phase implementation. • Monitoring and evaluations. • Social and environmental impact assessment. • Training, presentation & workshop facilitation. • Corporate-social-responsibility program development.
RefeRence PRojects:Ethanol cook-stove business development Client: Cleanstar Ventures.
Project Summary: GreenLight has provided the research and
development services necessary to launch an ethanol cook stove and
cooking fuel venture in Mozambique. Greenlight was involved in the
marketing and distributions strategy, product development, carbon
financing registration and management as well as ongoing monitoring
and evaluations activities
Sustainable Biomass Energy production Client: Solidaridad.
Project Summary: This project works with 2300 small-holder farmers
in Sofala and Manica provinces, supporting them to grow fast-grow-
ing tree species within their farm-lots. The farmers are organized in a
sustainable biomass association, which is to partner with a technology
supplier for the production of briquettes. These charcoal briquettes are
then sold as cooking fuel within nearby urban areas.
Sustainable model house in Nampula Client: NIRAS / Mozambique National Housing Fund (FFH).
Project Summary: The project aims to develop the first fully sustain-
able house within Mozambique. The house is to be built from local/
ecological material; be naturally ventilated; be energy efficient; pow-
ered by renewable energy sources; and demonstrate water efficiency.
This model house is to serve as an example for the building of 100 more
units by the state housing fund (FFH)
Mozambique energy use data collection and analysis
Client: Mozambique Ministry of Energy and the European Commission.
Project Summary: This large scale research project collected
energy use data across Mozambique. Within the major urban areas,
the household energy and institutional energy consumption was cal-
culated based on in-depth questionnaires. Biomass energy production
and supply was also studies based on field interviews and a compre-
hensive value chain analysis. This data was used in the elaboration of
Mozambique’s first biomass energy strategy.
Maputo Municipal market clean energy initiative Client: SNV and Maputo Municipality
Project Summary: GreenLight implemented the project development
of a joint initiative between SNV and the Municipality of Maputo to
introduce renewable and efficient energy sources to the local mar-
kets of the city. The initiative focused on energy efficient lighting, clean
cook-stoves for food vendors as well as improved biomass stoves.
RefeRence PRojects:Palma rural solar electrification feasibility study
Client: Anadarko and Worley Parsons.
Project Summary: Greenlight provided a thorough assessment of local
household energy use dynamics in the region of Palma- Cabo Delgado
province. The data was further utilized to forecast peak load energy
requirements of a community currently not connected to the grid. Two
models for solar electrification were presented as viable options :(1)
Autonomous home systems (2) Mini-grid system. Technical assistance
in the form of equipment requirements and installation procedures
were also provided.
Mozambique biofuels industry assessment
Client: Overseas Development Institute (ODI).
Project Summary: GreenLight was contracted by the Overseas
Development Institute to conduct an in-depth study on the Mozambican
biofuels development in 2011. The analysis included economic, social,
environmental and legislative components connected to the industry.
All biofuels projects within the country were analyzed.
Climate financing for sustainable charcoal production
Client: Government of Belgium and Energy Engineering Solutions.
Project Summary: The ultimate objective of the initiative is to
identify opportunities for the charcoal production sector in Mozam-
bique to benefit from climate financing, either through the Clean
Development Mechanism (CDM) or the Nationally Appropriate Mitiga-
tion Action (NAMA) framework. The project includes the development
of a feasibility study followed by a set of concrete practical actions.
Energy pellets from cotton waste in Cuamba
Client: JFS Holding
Project summary: Building on the large volumes of unused organic
waste generated by JFS-SAN’s cotton outgrowing scheme and oper-
ation, an opportunity was identified to capitalize on this, by using the
residues of the crop for energy production. GreenLight has developed
the feasibility study and business plan for the operation.
Meponda Village hydro electrification project
Client: Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC) and FUNAE
Project sumary: GreenLight partnered with Tractebel Engeneering for
the feasibility study and the technical development of a small-hydro
mini grid instalation project in Meponda village of Niassa province.
GreenLight analysed peak load requirments; electricity consumption
forecasts; local operational management stucture; the productive use
of energy; as well as the market willingness to pay by the community. .
Sanitation Value Chain Support in Beira
Client: Frisian Urban Sanitation Program (FUSP)
Project Summary: GreenLight in conjunction with the Beira Municipali-
ty carried out a detailed study accessing the sanitation needs in peri ur-
ban areas in the city of Beira. As a result GreenLight capacitated Small
and Medium Enterprises strengthening the sanitation value chain im-
proving sanitation, health and hygiene as well as increase access to
microfinance for sanitation products.
