WHY should I teach history to my children?HOW should I teach history to my children?

We started Greenleaf Press in 1989 because we could not find any history program for our children that satisfied us. We did find some wonderful out-of-print books which were not full of “ twaddle,” but instead told interesting stories about real people. We discovered that our kids loved history when it was presented to them in the form of an interesting story about a real person. We started Greenleaf with the publication of Famous Men of Greece and Famous Men of Rome.

Then we discovered that not all the good books were out of print, so we began carrying our "best picks" from books by other publishers. Finally, so many people who liked the books wanted to know how we used them, so we decided to publish Study Guides showing how to integrate biographies, activities, and reference material and to help parents out with questions to discuss with their children.

We think there are two important principles involved in teaching history to children: biography and chronology.

Biographies are the way the Bible teaches history. There are lessons to be learned from the good kings (virtues to imitate) and the wicked kings (sins to avoid). The history of the Old Testament is not a long dry procession of dates to memorize and unfamiliar names to fill in blanks, but the life stories of people whose stories are fascinating.

The Old Testament stories are what fathers are instructed to teach their children, “talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deut. 11:19)

At the center of every story is the question, “What does God think about this action, person, behavior?” By starting with this question, the study of history (even the study of very pagan nations) takes place in a way in which the God of History is ever present. The study of history is not merely the study of nations, but a moral training ground where the wise and the unwise are observed, and the consequences of wisdom and folly may be dissected under a teacher who charges less than Experience.

The second important principle in teaching history is chronology. This is the area in which the majority of history curricula disappoint us. Most elementary grade curricula spend four, five, or even six of the seven years studying exclusively American history.

It seems to us very odd to spend three years studying 200 years of history and one year cramming down the other four thousand. V.M. Hillyer, late headmaster of the Calvert School, describes the unfortunate consequences of too much American history in his introduction to A Child’s History of the World:

“In common with all children of my age, I was brought up on American History and given no other history but American, year in and year out, year after year for eight or more years. So far as I knew 1492 was the beginning of the world. Any events or characters before that time, reference to which I encountered by any chance, were put down in my mind in the same category with fairy-tales. Christ and His times, of which I heard only in Sunday-school, were to me mere fiction without reality. They were not mentioned in any history that I knew and therefore, so I thought, must belong not to a realm in time and space, but to a spiritual realm.”

We started Greenleaf Press to help prevent the disconnect between biblical history and secular history experienced by Hilyer and thousands of other students.

In organizing a course of study for children, we chose to break with the tradition that attempts to condense the study of world history into a one year course. We decided to spread the material out over the elementary school years and proceed at a leisurely pace that would allow the child to “live with” the material for a period of months. By the time the child has completed the seventh grade he should have covered the full span of Western and American history and thus be ready to begin again in greater depth a study of History and the Humanities at the high school level.

This course of study is adaptable if you’re starting history with an older student or want to cover the material in fewer years. If you’re starting with an older child, you can either move a little faster, or supplement their study with high school level literature that corresponds the the historical period they are studying.

You will find sections in the catalog and on the website covering each major historical period in order, with a variety of biographies,

reference books, and historical fiction. For Israel, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Reformation, there are Greenleaf Study Guides and Greenleaf Study Packages.

We hope you and your children will enjoy these books and the stories in them as much as we have.

5The Parthenonby Elizabeth MannThe Parthenon is more than a magnificent building. Every marble statue, every graceful column, is an expression of a civilization whose three great values still speak to us today:

Democracy• . At a time of god-like rulers, ordinary citizens voted to build the Parthenon.Egalitarianism• . The Parthenon’s art honored Athens’ water carriers as well as its gods.Balance• . The Parthenon’s aesthetic brought lightness and grace to height and mass.

The Parthenon tells of the rise of Athens -- from the religion that nurtured it, through the wars that tested it, to the democracy that ennobled it - culminating in the construction of the great temple on the Acropolis. The book not only captures the human stories, but also vividly illustrates the technical details behind the construction, from quarrying of the marbles to carving of the exquisite frieze. To look at the Parthenon is to see Athens. To see Athens, is to see ourselves.Hardback, 48 pages.193-141-4157 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$22.95

Wise Guy: The Life and Philosophy of Socratesby M.D. Usher

“I know that I know nothing.”With this classic statement, uttered over two thousand years ago, Socrates set the standard for the future of Western philosophy. By day, he soaked up the sun in the Athenian marketplace, where he’d converse for hours on end about the meaning of wisdom, right and wrong, courage, justice, and love. By night, he feasted and danced with friends. He was charming, but not handsome, happy, but not rich. Unfortunately, his method of thinking did not sit well with everyone. In the end, his fellow Athenians punished him with death. The story of Socrates’ life unfolds through cheerful illustrations and a two-tiered text, one layer quite simple, the other full of juicy additional details about the philosopher’s life and times. The ending assembles a “School of Athens,” showcasing thinkers, from Erasmus to Martin Luther King, Jr., who have been inspired by Socrates’ philosophy.074312494 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$16.00

7Medieval Worldby Jane BinghamLots of original color artwork along with short, explanatory paragraphs which function as expanded captions. Medieval World joins two other classic titles that we have long recommended, The Greeks and The Romans. Like them, it is a 96 page paperback, with color art-work printed on high-gloss pages.Topics are presented in chronological order, with coverage of The Byzantine Empire, The Barbarian Kingdoms, and Return to Christianity which mentions the Irish monks, Augustine’s mission to the Angles, and an illustration from the Book of Kells. There is extensive coverage of church history, with pages on The Power of the Popes, Enemies of the Church, Building a Cathedral, Going on a Pilgrimage, and Monks and Monasteries. The concluding pages cover the transition from the later Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Topics include Artists of Italy, Ideas and Inventions, and Voyages of Discovery. The reading level of the text is approximately grades 5-8. Younger children will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the text read to them. Older students (including high school and adult) will find a wealth of information here that goes well beyond what is covered in traditional textbooks (much more interesting, too!)079-450-8154 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$14.99

Renaissance Artists

Pippo the Foolby Tracey Fern, illustrated by Pau Estrada

Pippo is the nickname of Filippo Brunelleschi. He was a goldsmith in Florence with a knack for design. When a contest is announced to design a dome for the cathedral, Pippo decides he will compete. His rivals (older, wealthier, more accomplished) scorn him and laugh at his ideas. But Pippo is the only contestant who has worked out all the practical details of how to build a dome that will be 300 feet tall!

Fern and Estrada have created a delightful story for children about this important event

from the history of the Renaissance in Florence. Brunelleschi won the competition and spent sixteen years supervising the construc-tion of the dome. In order to make it work, he had to invent new kinds of bricks, new patterns for fitting them together and quick-drying mor-tar to hold them in place.

When the Dome was finished, Pippo the Fool is recognized as Pippo the Genius The text in this delightful story is written for children 8 through 12, but the story will hold the attention of even older students. 16th and 17th CenturyFamouse Men of 16th & 17th Centuryby Robert G. Shearer28 biographies from Queen Elizabeth I (who came to the throne in 1560) through King Louis XIV who died in 1715. The 17th century was an age of religious wars and revolutions. The French had seven civil wars of religion from 1570-1590. The German Empire had a religious civil war from 1618-1648. The

English had a civil war from 1642-1649.

It was also the century in which the English and French settlements were founding in North America at Jamestown, Plymouth, Boston, & Quebec.

But learning the wars will not convey to students what the times were like. Biographies will.

1621: A New Look at Thanksgivingby Catherine Grace and Margaret M. BruchacIn 1621, in a small settlement on the edge of the sea, 52 English colonists celebrated their first harvest, joined by 90 men of the Wampanoag tribe. There was no pumpkin pie or cranberry sauce. There were no Indians with woven blankets over their shoulders. No pilgrims with somber black clothes and silver buckle hats either. The English didn’t even call themselves Pilgrims. This book puts aside the myths and takes a new look at our American history. It questions what we know and recovers lost voices of the Wampanoag people. 1621 invites young people to read, listen, and think about our shared history. The book features a foreword, a section on the actual reenactment and the concept of living history, a chronology, an index, and a bibliography079-226-1399 ......................................$7.95

William Bradford: Plymouth’s Faithful Pilgrimby Gary D. SchmidtHighlights the childhood experiences, religious conversion, and deep faith that marked the remarkable life of William Bradford. Begins with the Separatists’ emigration from England to the Netherlands, and then their decision, 10 years later, to sail to the New World. Bradford was elected governor of the Plimoth Colony 2 years after it was established and served for 36 years until his death in 1657. He lived long enough to see the Separatists of Plimoth overwhelmed and eclipsed by the arrival of the Puritans who established a rival colony at Boston. This is a wonderful biography for those who want more than just the paragraph or two in the standard history texts.080-285-1487 .................................................. $14.00

Future Titles from Greenleaf1776: A New Look at Revolutionary Williamsburgby K.M. KostyalMost Americans are unaware of the large role that Williamsburg and Virginia played in the American Revolution. Williamsburg was the cap-ital of the Virginia Colony, of course. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry all spent considerable time there. All three were members of the colonial legislature which met there. Henry and Jefferson were both governors, elected after the colony

declared its independence.

This large-format picture-book is divided into five major sections, with an introduction and an afterword. Part one is a section describing the founding and growth of Williamsburg as the capital of the colony of Virginia. Part two recounts “A New Spirit” and describes the opposition to British rule which grew in the 1760s and had its dramatic high point in Patrick Henry’s speech denouncing the Stamp Act in 1765. Part three is titled “Revolution” and begins with the attempt by the Royal Governor Dunmore to seize the powder reserves of the militia from its storehouse in Williamsburg. It concludes with the passage of the “Declaration of Rights” (written by George Mason) by the Virginia Convention in June of 1776.

Part four describes “The City at War.” Patrick Henry, the first popularly elected governor, replaced Lord Dunmore. The militia assembled and remained camped on the green lawns of Williamsburg, protecting the colonial government from attack by British troops. In 1779, Thomas Jefferson was elected governor and the capital was moved from Williamsburg to Richmond. Part five, “A Hard-Won Victory” describes the arrival of British troops under Benedict Arnold, who sailed by Williamsburg up the James River and sacked Richmond in January of 1781. Arnold retreated through Williamsburg and was then joined by General Cornwallis and his larger body of troops in June. By the end of the summer, Cornwallis had moved his army to Yorktown, about ten miles away from Williamsburg and was soon besieged there by American and French forces under Washington and Lafayette. In October, Cornwallis surrendered.

This volume, like the previous three from National Geographic, makes excellent use of historical settings and dedicated re-enactors who take great pains to get all of the details of their clothes and possessions correct. Colonial Williamsburg is a 300 acre park where the foundation has very carefully restored original buildings from the colonial era. There is something about these stunning color photographs which makes the events much more real. The faces of individuals in the crowd forces us to realize that these were ordinary real people – and that the iconic events of the American Revolution were felt by individuals from all stations of life.

There is a great deal of attention paid in the text and photographs to the ways in which colonial life and the events of the Revolution were experienced differently by the slave community in colonial Virginia. Rightfully so. Without lapsing into a predictable political correctness, the book has a refreshing honesty in reporting the reality of the institution of slavery. The tension between the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Declaration of Rights is noted and underscored.

Along with the other titles in this series, National Geographic is doing a fantastic job of making early American history accessible to younger readers. The publisher lists the target age group for this book as “8-12.” The text seems to me to be pitched a little bit older. I’d estimate more like 10-15, but the pictures will certainly grab the attention of younger readers. The content is far more engaging than the accounts in the standard textbooks. I’d certainly recommend this for students up through grades 8 or 9.

When George Washington was sixteen years old, he began copying 110 maxims for polite behavior into his schoolbooks. These rules describe the behavior of a gentleman, and many claim that they greatly influenced Washington’s attitudes and standards for his own behavior.

One day, when we were all tired of the standard handwriting practice book copy material, we began using Washington’s Rules as copy work. While many of them have obvious application to the eighteenth century, they also have a lot to say to modern gentlemen and ladies.

We hadn’t expected to enjoy these sayings as much as we did. They rarely stayed merely copywork exercise but became the basis of other discussions. “Show nothing to your friend that might affright him,” had immediate application. Other rules addressed putting others first and self last - and other ways to show respect to those around us.

Something special happens when children write these rules out for themselves.

English for the Thoughtful Childby Mary Hyde (revised by Cyndy Shearer)I had a long list of things I wanted to find in a first grammar/composition text. I wanted to apply what Charlotte Mason called “narration.” I wanted material that would concentrate on the writing process and yet not burden the young child. I wanted a text that would draw the child into writing. I wanted a text that would lay the foundation for good composition skills that could be applied in all learning situations. With eleven children to care for, I wanted something simple and fun to work with—both for me and my children. When I found this book, I knew I had found what I wanted to use. Originally published in 1903, this book uses wonderful pictures to stimulate the child’s imagination and lead him or her into writing. There are memorization assignments, oral compositions, written compositions and practice exercises. I use this book as a second grade English text, but it is also very useful as a first course for older, reluctant writers. No teacher’s edition necessary; everything you need is in the student text.188-251-4076 ................................................$18.95

English for the Thoughtful Child 2by Fred Scott and Gordon Southworth (revised by Cyndy Shearer)After English for the Thoughtful Child was published 1989, we had countless requests for a second volume. Because we wanted ETC2 to be more than just another language arts workbook, we waited for just the right book. Contains all the distinctives of the original (nature lessons, oral composition, picture lessons, memory work, and a gentle introduction to grammar) all centered around the development of writing skills.188-251-4440 ................................................... $18.95

How to Write Clearlyby Ruth Beechick

A common sense approach that speaks clearly to writers from young teens to adults. Headings include: “How to link sentences to keep the readers with you.” “How following the story thread is better than “encyclopedia” fact writing.” “How to solve most comma problems with grammar rules.” “How to write with verbs instead of nouns to perk up your prose.”

This book contrasts with much of today’s teaching on how to write, which is ineffective and deadening to students. Ruth explains the historical roots of that old system so you can confidently move to the meaning system. A bonus chapter gives a history of how English language came to us.088-062-0269 ...............................................$6.99

The Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Literatureby Cyndy ShearerOrganized into six units.

Unit one is based on a study of Daniel 1-4 and focuses on the question, “Why should a Christian study pagan literature?” The question is answered using the biblical examples of Daniel in the court of King Nebuchadnezzar and

Paul on Mars Hill in Athens.Unit two is a review of Genesis 1-11Unit three focuses on The Epic of Gilgamesh and

analyzes what Babylonian religion taught about creation and the nature of God.

Unit four is a six-week, in-depth study of Homer’s Odyssey, with an emphasis on the Greek notions of virtue, excellence, and the hero.

Unit five is a six-week study of Sophocles’ great tragic trilogy Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonnus, and Antigone.

Unit six is a four-week study of the modern French playwright Anouilh’s retelling of Antigone with a focus on how one’s worldview affects one’s notions of the heroic and the tragic.188-251-4300 ...............................................$18.95

The Greenleaf Guide to Medieval Literatureby Cyndy Shearer

Our high school study of literature runs in parallel to our study of history. While our tenth grade students are studying medieval history, we also have them study medieval literature. Studying the two subjects together makes each class a richer experience.

This inductive study focuses on the texts and gives detailed reading assignments, observation questions, and discussion questions. The book is intended to guide a parent and student, teacher and student, or tutor and student as they read the important works of literature from Anglo-Saxon poetry and Beowulf to Chaucer and Hamlet. The final work studied in the guide is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead which allows the students to compare and contrast the Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern world views.

The text, analysis, and discussion questions are all written from a biblical, Christian worldview.188-251-4300 ...............................................$18.95

about David RohlA Review of From Eden to ExileIt is refreshing to read an account of the history of

Israel by a noted academic / archeologist which treats the biblical text respectfully! David Rohl cites an extensive collection of archaeological finds and artifacts which confirm the historical accuracy of the biblical account and attest to the historical reality of the Patriarchs. Rohl is part of a growing number of modern scholars who are challenging many of the assumptions and chronologies of the ancient world. Rohl approaches the biblical texts with a quite different attitude from the 19 & 20th century skeptics. The result is a startling confirmation of the biblical record and a revision of the chronology of the ancient world.

Orthodox and conservative Christians will disagree with David Rohl’s version of the lives of Adam, Enoch, and Noah. but Rohl’s narrative here is little more than speculative conjecture – imaginative, but not really historical.

The strength and brilliance of Rohl’s narrative is his “New Chronology” for Egypt. The traditional chronology yields no evidence of the Jews’ sojourn in Egypt, or the Exodus, or the Conquest, or even of the flourishing of the nation of Israel under David and Solomon. Rohl, based on the evidence, revises the chronology. He goes back and looks at the same places, but at different times, and finds countless confirmations of the details of the biblical account. His history of both Egypt and Israel is “satisfyingly supported by the stratigraphic record and colourfully enhanced by the contemporary texts of Israel’s powerful neighbours. It provides a solid and ultimately believable historical foundation for the religious messages of the biblical text.”

The book is beautifully laid out (Rohl’s work, not Greenleaf’s!) and illustrated with maps derived from satellite photography as well as stunning photographs of ancient artifacts. It is also brilliantly written. Rohl has a knack for taking the details of archeology and explaining sophisticated concepts and analyses in ways that a layman can easily understand. This is no small accomplishment.

Christians will not agree with his speculations about the details behind the book of Genesis. Indeed, it seems to me that Rohl has weakened his case by inventing a narrative for the earliest time period where he has the least amount of evidence. But when he reaches Joseph and Egypt, all those who respect and appreciate the biblical text must acknowledge that Rohl has done great service in re-evaluating the evidence and synthesizing it in a new and more accurate structure that better explains the ancient world – and in the process confirms the historical accuracy of the Old Testament.

Thus, while there are many things in From Eden to Exile that I would take issue with, there is also much that I admire and appreciate. And because I appreciate what I can only judge to be an honest, forthright, original work of scholarship, I am proud to make From Eden to Exile available to the reading public (and the academic world) once again so that David Rohl’s contribution to the New Chronology will continue to find its audience. It will surely provoke, agitate, and force those who read it to re-think their ideas about the ancient world. It is my hope that it will also play a part in raising up a new generation of ancient historians who will continue to investigate the evidence, continue to search for archeological clues, and continue the ongoing discussion of the historical events recorded in the Old Testament.

David Rohl is recognized as the UK’s highest profile Egyptologist and one of the world’s best-known historians.

With degrees in Egyptology, Ancient History, Mycenaean Archaeology and Levantine Archaeology, David is a genuine scholar with a full list of academic credentials but, at the same time, is a highly original thinker.

He is recognised in the Christian evangelical communities as a non-believing scholar prepared to defend the historicity of the Bible. For that, and his convincing arguments based on archaeology, he is regularly asked to present his thesis to large church audiences. Arguments based on his work are now used as official examples of how best to answer questions for the current A-level examination papers in the UK. Jewish boys are taught the David Rohl version of the Torah story in preparation for their Barmitzvas. Seminary lecturers in the USA teach the Old Testament to their students using David Rohl’s books as their guides.

Greenleaf Press, along with Stretch Productions, is very pleased to be able to make David Rohl’s books available in the US again.

From Eden to Exileby David RohlRohl re-examines and re-tells the history of Israel from Eden to the Exile in Babylon in light of the revised chronology he developed during his research in Egypt. 528 pages with numerous maps & photographs.188-251-4580 ................................... $24.95
