Greener planet, as a corporate social responsibility, PTCL IT has initiated Greener IT program.

We plan to take the following initiatives with the help of all of you in reducing carbon foot print

of PTCL. These small steps for conserving energy collectively will make a big impact. According

to one study for every kilowatt of energy around 1.55 pound of carbon is emitted and about

17% of the 3.3 billion cubic meters of wood consumed worldwide each year is for papermaking.

Let’s enjoy an eco - lifestyle by living greener in all aspects of our lives and let’s make our

contribution towards a greener environment by taking following environment friendly steps:

Computer Energy Conservation

It is estimated that people use 588 billion KWh of energy

per year just for the computer use. To help conserve

energy for your computer you can:

Switch to energy-saving settings

Turn off your Monitor whenever you’re not using it

Keep your screens at low brightness. It uses less

energy and is easier on eyes.

Set it to sleep mode when you are away for short

periods of time

Turn off your systems when leaving office

Paperless Is More..Prioritize Paper Use

Paper is made from the cellulose of the tree fiber. So paper

industry heavily relies on trees for the supply of products

whose basic ingredients include fiber cellulose. Do you

really have to print out every email and handout? You can

reduce paper waste by going paperless wherever possible.

You can try to:

Keep copies of important emails, files and manuals



on your computer for easy searches and retrievals

Send updates through email instead of on paper

Review documents online instead of printing them

Use Email as medium for Documents approvals

You do use paper on a daily basis then you can make eco-friendly paper choices. Here are some things you can do:

Select recycled and chlorine-free paper

Bring your laptop to meetings to avoid printing out

presentation handouts

Use old sheets for scrap paper, note-taking and draft

printing when required

Power of Printer

The printer is one of the most-used office items. Every day

it cranks out tons of important emails and other

documents. Here are some ways you make your printer

use greener:

Use a printer that does double-sided printing

Print in draft mode

Design documents in a manner which optimizes

paper use

Turn off printers and other peripherals while leaving

the office as they continue to consume power even if

they are not in use

Other Important ConsiderationsHere are some of the important factors that you may keep

in mind for a step towards greener life:

Turn off the lights when not required

Discuss ideas using whiteboards rather than paper;

it is more effective and greener

Avoid plastic bags. Try to use only recyclable paper



bags to put your things in

IT Initiatives

Here are some initiatives that IT department at PTCL has

taken for its contribution towards greener environment:

Selection of Energy saving computer, monitors,

printers and other peripherals when going for the

new purchase

Procurement of duplex printers for double side

printing to lessen the paper usage and tree cuttings

ratios

Virtualization of servers, storage and networks for

the optimum utilizations as most of the servers are

underutilized. The wastage of energy for such non

business purposes can be a big problem in terms of

investment. Virtualization can help to achieve energy

efficiency by utilizing the equipment at its full

capacity

Arrangements of Dual Power Source for the DataCenter, thus minimizing the usage of Generators

which adversely effects the environment by emitting

CO2. Currently three Gensets are installed which

consumes 1200KW of energy. Thus the effect of

1.55 pound Carbon per 1KW of energy can be

minimized by having power from multiple feeders

which is under progres

Replacements of desktops with VDI with reducedpower consumption and heat emissions at each

terminal

55% of energy coming into the data center is

utilized by the infrastructure devices which are

supporting IT Equipment like UPS, ACs etc. This

energy can be saved up by the usage of energy



efficient devices. Currently Stulz ACs using Precision

cooling have been deployed which switches to the

operating mode depending upon heat load in data

Center. The compressor is only switched on when it

is absolutely required. Stulz ACs using Dynamic Freecooling save up to 60% of the energy used by

conventional cooling systems.
