Senior Blaine Gunther’s move from mid-fielder to for- ward has not only been good for his personal stats, it also helped GCHS post two wins and outscore their opponents 12-1 along the way. In the first game after the move, the Cats whipped Clarkdale 7-0 on the JCJC campus in Ellisville. Thursday night, they showed the win over Clarkdale wasn’t a fluke by beating South Jones 5-1 in the home opener at Wildcat Stadium / Johnny Ainsworth Field. Gunther scored three goals and added an assist Tuesday night at JCJC, while sopho- more Jackson Turner posted two goals and two assists. Senior Klye Courtney and sophomore Jacob Casey also scored. On Thursday at home against the Braves, Gunther once again led the Cats, this time with two goals and three assists. Courtney and Casey also scored a goal apiece, while Courtney and Turner had assists. The GCHS defensive efforts were also solid in the two wins. Gregory Cochran, Zack Mathis and goal keeper Patrick Noblitt all shined as GCHS improved to 3-1 on the season heading into the Thanksgiving break. The GCHS girls are 1-1 on the season after splitting their games with Clarkdale and South Jones. Sophomore for- ward Olivia Courtney led the way for GCHS at JCJC, pro- viding three goals and an assist. Classmates Mellie Snyder and Abbi Henderson added a goal and an assist, respectively . Defensively, sen- ior Lindsay Backstrom and  junior Whitney Mathis had eight take-aways to pace the Lady Cats. In goal, senior Charlcey Bradley and fresh- man Mary Grace Turner com- bined for six saves in one half of work each. The Lady Cats JV team dropped a 1-4 decision to Clarkdale. Kaitlyn Snyder pro- vided the scoring for GCHS. The Lady Cats jumped out to a 1-0 lead over South Jones in their home opener, but defen- sive letdowns got the best of them en route to a 3-7 loss. The Lady Bears set the tone in the opener, whipping the Lady Bucs 34-7 to improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the con- ference. Beyonce Higgins led the way for LJHS, putting up 15 points. Ariel Blackston had 10 points and four rebounds, while McKay Lee Bray added seven points. Karleah Malone was also solid with two points and five rebounds. Keara Leverette had four assists. “I thought the team played awesome on both ends of the court,” LJHS coach Clara Burley said. “The defensive effort was excellent and smothered Buckatunna, while the offense was efficient and shot a high percentage from the field.” In boys’ action, Burley’s son Jonas paced the Bears. Burley had 14 points and hit the game- winning shot to propel the Bears to a 26-23 win. He also had two steals. Larue Weaver and Austin Averette continued their strong play as well. Weaver had six points and six rebounds, while Averette led the team with 12 rebounds. Dearik Grice (three points), Tagg Creech (two points, five steals) and Quentralis Washam (one point) all played well for LJHS in the win. “This was a huge win for us,” LJHS coach Karl Woullard said. “We had a set play for Jonas for a 3-pointer and he nailed it and gave us the lead. And, we had a solid effort on defense down the stretch to close out the game.” LJHS will be back in action Dec. 2 when the Bucs travel to Leakesville for a rematch. The Lady Bears are set to get things started with a 5 p.m. tipoff. Lady Rams whip Runnelstown The McLain Lady Rams improved to 3-2 on their sea- son last Thursday with a con- vincing 20-9 win over Runnelstown. Adaisha Griffin had six points to lead MAC, while Jaymya Moody added four points. No results were available for the Lady Rams’ matchup with Richton last Thursday or from boys’ action at MAC. The Lady Rams return to action Dec. 2 when the confer- ence tournament gets under- way in Richton.
