Wildcat soccer teams have mixed results heading into break
From Staff ReportsThe GCHS boys’ soccer team
tweaked their on-field lineup abit last week and the results
have been impressive.
Senior Blaine Gunther’smove from mid-fielder to for-
ward has not only been goodfor his personal stats, it also
helped GCHS post two wins
and outscore their opponents12-1 along the way. In the first
game after the move, the Catswhipped Clarkdale 7-0 on the
JCJC campus in Ellisville.
Thursday night, they showedthe win over Clarkdale wasn’t
a fluke by beating South Jones5-1 in the home opener at
Wildcat Stadium / Johnny
Ainsworth Field.Gunther scored three goals
and added an assist Tuesdaynight at JCJC, while sopho-
more Jackson Turner postedtwo goals and two assists.
Senior Klye Courtney andsophomore Jacob Casey also
scored. On Thursday at homeagainst the Braves, Gunther
once again led the Cats, this
time with two goals and threeassists. Courtney and Casey
also scored a goal apiece,while Courtney and Turner had
assists.The GCHS defensive efforts
were also solid in the two wins.Gregory Cochran, Zack Mathis
and goal keeper Patrick Noblittall shined as GCHS improved
to 3-1 on the season headinginto the Thanksgiving break.
The GCHS girls are 1-1 onthe season after splitting their
games with Clarkdale and
South Jones. Sophomore for-ward Olivia Courtney led the
way for GCHS at JCJC, pro-viding three goals and an
assist. Classmates MellieSnyder and Abbi Henderson
added a goal and an assist,respectively. Defensively, sen-
ior Lindsay Backstrom and junior Whitney Mathis had
eight take-aways to pace theLady Cats. In goal, senior
Charlcey Bradley and fresh-man Mary Grace Turner com-
bined for six saves in one half of work each.
The Lady Cats JV team
dropped a 1-4 decision toClarkdale. Kaitlyn Snyder pro-
vided the scoring for GCHS.The Lady Cats jumped out to
a 1-0 lead over South Jones in
their home opener, but defen-sive letdowns got the best of
them en route to a 3-7 loss.Individual stats were not avail-
able from that game.

Bears remain unbeaten,Lady Rams ready for conference tournament From Staff Reports
The LJHS basketball teamsrolled into the Thanksgiving
break undefeated after a sweepof Buckatunna on Thursday in
conference play.The Lady Bears set the tone
in the opener, whipping theLady Bucs 34-7 to improve to
3-0 overall and 2-0 in the con-ference. Beyonce Higgins led
the way for LJHS, putting up
15 points. Ariel Blackston had10 points and four rebounds,
while McKay Lee Bray addedseven points. Karleah Malone
was also solid with two pointsand five rebounds. Keara
Leverette had four assists.“I thought the team played
awesome on both ends of thecourt,” LJHS coach Clara
Burley said. “The defensiveeffort was excellent and
smothered Buckatunna, while
the offense was efficient andshot a high percentage from
the field.”In boys’ action, Burley’s son
Jonas paced the Bears. Burleyhad 14 points and hit the game-
winning shot to propel theBears to a 26-23 win. He also
had two steals.Larue Weaver and Austin
Averette continued their strongplay as well. Weaver had six
points and six rebounds, while
Averette led the team with 12rebounds. Dearik Grice (three
points), Tagg Creech (two
points, five steals) andQuentralis Washam (one
point) all played well for LJHSin the win.
“This was a huge win for us,”LJHS coach Karl Woullard
said. “We had a set play forJonas for a 3-pointer and he
nailed it and gave us the lead.And, we had a solid effort on
defense down the stretch to
close out the game.”LJHS will be back in action
Dec. 2 when the Bucs travel toLeakesville for a rematch. The
Lady Bears are set to get thingsstarted with a 5 p.m. tipoff.
Lady Rams whipRunnelstown
The McLain Lady Rams
improved to 3-2 on their sea-
son last Thursday with a con-vincing 20-9 win over
Runnelstown.Adaisha Griffin had six
points to lead MAC, whileJaymya Moody added four
points.No results were available for
the Lady Rams’ matchup withRichton last Thursday or from
boys’ action at MAC.The Lady Rams return to
action Dec. 2 when the confer-
ence tournament gets under-way in Richton.
