nized, the organization must show quality in education, referee devel-opment and risk management. Each State Association may develop and use its own recognition system at the state level. However, to receive the US Youth Soccer 5-Star Recreational Program Recognition, the member organization must show commitment to coaching education, referee development, full participation in Kid-Safe (background checks), goal safety and sideline and parent behavior and education. Our Green White Girls Recreational Program is one of only 5 clubs in the 14 state region to be so honored.

1ST TEAM – NEWS AND NOTES. The Green White First Team did not have a stellar Fall season. In fact, it was quite dismal. For

much of the season, it was a struggle to get enough players each week to field a team. The results were predictable as the squad crawled to a last place finish with a record of 1-15-2; scoring 22 goals for while al-lowing 61 goals against. With the last place finish the team was rele-gated to the First Division next season. In light of the lack of player commitment, the club also opted out of the indoor season.

O30 TEAM - NEWS AND NOTES. The Green White O30 Team’s Fall season was a lot like the First Team’s, except they did

not score as many goals and there is no relegation for Old Timers, be-ing old is punishment enough. The O30s also finished last in the league with a 1-12-3 record. They did, however, manage to set a couple of re-cords. With a league low 12 goals on the season, they managed to score less than 1/4 of the goals scored by league winners, AAC Eagles. They also managed to give up 57 goals against, which was 11 more than second from bottom SC Lions. Not exactly the goals set by the team at the beginning of the season. Rob Czop summed up the season, “Lack of commitment extremely hurt us. Also, not using our brains.”

O40 TEAM - NEWS AND NOTES. And it was a trifecta for the GW adult teams as the Green White O40 squad also finished dead

last in the Metropolitan League with a record of 1-11-5. Said noted Norwegian optimist, Keith Andersson, “Well, at least we didn’t lose as many games as the First Team or O30s.”

Looking to put the league season behind them, the O40 team now has its sights set on the Las Vegas King Cup in January. The O40 team returns to Sin City as the defending champions and is looking for an-other successful tournament run. The team has actually split into two squads this year, competing in both the O40 and O48 divisions. (Before you question whether there is such a thing as an O48 division, there are even O55 and O60 divisions.) The provisional list of players traveling to Las Vegas for the tournament this year are: Keith Andersson, Mark

Babich, Jeff Baker, Ed Campbell, Armando Carlo, Jim Dionne,

Darrell Duerst, John Dunkas, Mindi Gill, Andrew Grant, Nathan

Grosse, Mike Grosse, Fritz Grutzner, Matt Haggerty, Barney Her-

nandez, Tommy Isirov, Keith Kedierling, Pat Nash, Raphael

(Meme) Ortiz, Pat Palbicke, John Parsinen, Bill Quinlan, Brian

#3 - THERE ARE THREE (3) GREEN WHITERS IN THE TOP 15 IN IHSA HISTORY FOR MOST CONSECUTIVE MATCHES SCORED IN A SEASON, WHO ARE THEY? THE ANSWER IS THE AFOREMENTIONED ROBERT MESCHBACH, 71 GOALS IN 24 CON-

SECUTIVE GAMES FOR GORDON TECH IN 1976 (#1); KEN SNOW, 32 GOALS IN 13 CONSECUTIVE GAMES FOR HOFFMAN ESTATES H.S. IN 1985 (#10) AND TOM

AN ALL-AMERICAN AND HALL OF FAME CAREER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - PARKSIDE. SAID TOM OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL SCORING STREAK, "I DIDN’T FIND OUT ABOUT IT UNTIL YEARS LATER. I MEAN I KNEW I SCORED A LOT OF GOALS, BUT I DIDN’T KNOW I HAD SET A SCHOOL RECORD. BACK THEN, I USUALLY PLAYED WIDE MIDFIELDER WITH GREEN WHITE BECAUSE WE WERE LOADED WITH TALENTED UP FRONT STRIKERS LIKE BLAKE RODGERS, PHIL IMM,

MIKE BYRNE AND RICKY TOVAR. BUT IN HIGH SCHOOL, TEAMS WERE NOT AS DEEP AS OUR GW SQUAD, SO I MOVED BACK TO MY FAVORED POSITION UP FRONT, GIVING ME MORE CHANCES TO SCORE. I GUESS IT WORKED BECAUSE I SCORED A LOT OF GOALS." AFTER COLLEGE, TOM PICKED UP HIS PLAYING CAREER WITH THE GREEN WHITE FIRST TEAM THAT SPANNED NEARLY 20 YEARS IN TOTAL BECOMING ONE OF THE ALL-TIME SCORING LEADERS IN CLUB HISTORY.

competition. In their first 5 games playing in the Open Division, the squad went undefeated, bagging 15 goals for while giving up just 1 goal against. The team ulti-mately dropped their last game of the season to finish with 15 points from a record of 5-1-0. The squad also played in the President’s Cup this season, advancing to the semi-finals before falling to eventual champions FC United in double overtime. Along the way they bested Team Evanston (2-0), FC Lake County (2-0), Chicago City (3-1) and Windy City (4-1). Congratula-tions on another stellar season. The team’s MVP for the Fall was Sarah Magnoni and the Coach’s Award went to Ally Block.

IFC ILLINOIS FALL CUP. In October, a gang of Green White Youth Teams de-scended upon Champaign-Urban for the

2015 IFC Fall Cup. With all the Green White teams under U14 playing in the tournament, all the families got together for a special barbeque. They even had some cool shirts printed as a fund-raiser for the Green White International Experience Program.

2nd ANNUAL FOOTGOLF. Thanks to everyone who came out to our second annual Footgolf outing in September. The event was

well attended and we raised some money for Green White's International Experience Program. But more importantly, we all had a GREAT time footgolfing. With the exception of Joe Welk who took the prize for longest toe-poke, and McKenzie Folkers who had the low score for the girls, the podium was dominated by the Howarth family. Adam Howarth had the best score for men, Laura Howarth had the best score for

#4 - WHO RANKS #3 ALL-TIME IN IHSA HISTORY FOR BOTH SINGLE SEASON AND CAREER ASSISTS? BACK IN 1976 WHEN ROBERT MESCHBACH SET THE STATE AND NATIONAL SINGLE SEASON SCORING RECORD (SEE QUESTION #1), SOMEONE HAD TO GET HIM THE BALL. TURNS OUT, IT WAS JOE FILIAN, ANOTHER GREEN WHITER OPERATING AS THE SET-UP MAN. THE DUO HAD LOTS OF PRACTICE, PLAY-

ING TOGETHER AT GREEN WHITE. JOE RECORDED 43 ASSISTS THAT SEASON FOR GORDON TECH AND FINISHED HIS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER WITH 81 HELPERS, PLAC-

ING HIM AT #3 ON THE ALL-TIME IHSA RECORD BOOK. AND JOE DIDN’T JUST HAND OUT ASSISTS, HE SCORED MORE THAN 35 GOALS HIMSELF THAT SEASON. SAID JOE OF THEIR GORDON TECH PARTNERSHIP, “ROBERT AND I DEFINITELY HONED OUR PARTNERSHIP AT GREEN WHITE. THAT YEAR WHEN ROBERT SCORED ALL THOSE GOALS WE ONLY PLAYED A LITTLE MORE THAN A HALF EACH GAME. IF WE HAD PLAYED FULL GAMES, NOW THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING FOR THE RECORD BOOKS.” FOLLOWING HIGH SCHOOL, JOE WAS DRAFTED BY AND PLAYED FOR THE NEW YORK COSMOS. HE LATER RETURNED TO GREEN WHITE TO COACH THE 1ST TEAM. JOE IS PICTURED HERE WITH THE ‘79 COSMOS ABOVE A GUY NAMED BECKENBAUER.

further develop your skills. For the little ones, there is the Winter First Kick Academy (7 yrs. and younger) and the Big Brother camp (ages 5-10). Both camps are overseen by our award-winning Director of Coaching Adam Howarth. The Big Brother camp is also staffed by our U13 Boys team. They love helping younger players, and every penny of that camp will go to their Germany Trip 2017 fund.

For the more experienced players (8 and over), there are three (3) dif-ferent camps available - Ball Mastery, SAQ (Speed, Agility, Quick-ness) and Goaltending. Adam Howarth will man the ball mastery and SAQ camps, while our experienced goaltending coach Marek

Radziewski will teach the goalkeeping camp. All three of these camps

are open to kids of all-ages. The costs are minimal, and the kids really learn soccer. For more information about each of these camps, go to www.greenwhitesoccer.org. If you have any questions, e-mail Adam

Howarth at [email protected].

#5 - AT 11 SECONDS, WHO SCORED THE 14TH QUICKEST GOAL IN IHSA HISTORY? ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1989, GREEN WHITE’S OWN MIKE BYRNE SCORED IN JUST 11 SECONDS FOR BUFFALO GROVE HIGH SCHOOL AGAINST MAIN EAST. EXPLAINED BYRNE, “WE TRIED IT EVERY SO OFTEN AT THE BEGINNING OF GAMES. I’D START OUT ON THE WING AND SOMEONE WOULD TOUCH THE BALL TO BRIAN MCBRIDE

(OF USMNT FAME). AS I SPRINTED TOWARD THE GOAL, BRIAN WOULD HIT A SWEET PASS OVER THE HEAD OF THEIR LAST MAN AND I’D GO IN ONE ON ONE AGAINST THE KEEPER. THE TEAMS WE PLAYED AGAINST AT GREEN WHITE WERE MUCH BETTER ORGANIZED, SO WE NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO TRY IT THERE, BUT

WE HAD SOME QUICK PLAYERS LIKE RICKY TOVAR AND BLAKE RODGERS WHO COULD HAVE PULLED IT OFF. THAT IS WHAT WAS GREAT ABOUT GW COACH GYURKO, HE ALWAYS ALLOWED US TO EXPRESS OURSELVES AND USE THE INDI-

VIDUAL TALENTS WE EACH BROUGHT TO THE TEAM. THAT, AND THE CAMARADERIE, IS WHAT MADE GREEN WHITE SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY FOR.” MIKE PLAYED FOR GREEN WHITE AS A YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT WINNING SEVERAL LEAGUE, STATE AND REGIONAL TITLES. HE WENT ON TO PLAY AT ST. LOUIS UNIVERSITY, TEAMING AGAIN WITH MCBRIDE AND FORMER GW TEAMMATE SHAUN FOGARTY (THAT’S HIM ABOVE IN THE RED KEEPER JERSEY) TO EARN A FINAL FOUR APPEARANCE IN 1991. THEY LOST THAT YEAR IN THE SEMI’S TO VIRGINIA IN 4 OVER-TIMES. THAT VIR-

GINIA TEAM FEATURED FUTURE USMNT STAR CLAUDIO REYNA AND THE SCHOOL WENT ON TO AN UNPRECEDENTED RUN OF 4 STRAIGHT NATIONAL TITLE UNDER FUTURE US MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM COACH, BRUCE ARENA. FOLLOWING COLLEGE, MIKE WENT ON TO A PROFESSIONAL CAREER IN THE UNITED STATES AND GERMANY.

had no way of knowing their club would eventually serve thousands of members, field hundreds of teams, win scores of division, city and state titles, send nu-merous players into the professional ranks, and en-shrine more than a dozen members into the Illinois Soccer Hall of Fame.
