WHAT IS THE OUTDOORSMAN’S CODE?

It’s a code of being, acting, and living, the Outdoorsman’s code, is a four step easily learned creed for outdoor living. This outdoor creed is a code of ethics out of the practices of the Boy Scouts of America. A long lasting creed of an or-ganization over one hundred years old, it’s a creed shared and passed on that celebrates the harmony that is possible with the Earth. By following the code a person should not be without this knowledge and curtesy of the wilderness he or she should be in accordance with these principles. Accord-ing to the Boy Scouts of Amer-ica website: As an American, I will do my best to be clean in my outdoor manners, to be careful with fire, to be consid-erate in the outdoors, and to be conservation minded. It is suggested that anyone partici-pating in outdoor like activities be in accordance with the Out-doorsman’s code. Whether that be hunting or hiking, any and all types of activity in nature should be done so with some care to the environment. In this concise description of the four principles of the outdoors-man’s code is information for an environment conscious indi-vidual. This principles are sim-ple ways of being that assist greatly in wilderness survival and life in general.

BE CLEAN

To be clean in the outdoors a person must be aware of their surroundings, their proper-ty, and themselves. It is easy to relax outdoors and forget a few scraps of trash behind which can intrude on the habi-tat of a species in that area. It’s similar to the procedure when you use the bathroom at your boss’s house. Make it clean as if you were never there. Always be aware of any litter, waste, or anything that looks foreign to the area. Being clean en-sures that we are not trashing the wilderness with beef jerky wrappers or coke cans, not endangering any animals or any habitats. The use of clean water and liquids is also part of sanitation in the wilderness. The conservation of water is essential in survival and hav-ing clean drinkable water is crucial to avoid sickness or dehydration. A strategy for pu-rifying water is boiling it over a campfire for a long time and obviously waiting for it to cool to drink it. Staying clean is the best defense from contracting disease or plant rashes.

BE CAREFUL

Being careful minded is essential when embarking into the wild green wilderness. Knowing what to look for like suspicious footprints could be an indication animal nearby, it’s pretty easy to identify the size of an animal based on its paw prints along with any droppings it might have left nearby. As well as dangerous

animals there can be danger-ous situations such as a high leaning trees out of sight, or a large drop that people need to be aware of to avoid falling. Be-ing cautious and careful during your wilderness activities will ensure less probability of haz-ard or injury.

Animal life in the wild adapts constantly to human activity. Considerate outdoorsman observe from afar using bin-oculars. Respecting the wild-life by not disturbing will be safer for you and less stressful for animals. Try your best to not approach animals to feed them or observe them closer, it’s hard to know what diseas-es might be laced in unknown water. A dehydrated human without water in harsh condi-tions can only go without water for 3 days. On the topic of hunting, an outdoorsman should hunt if he or she needs to, and to limit the hunting to feed yourself in-stead of killing to kill. A hunter should also respect the natural order of nature to be compas-sionate to the animal and make their death as painless as pos-sible. A person must always be vigilant of other hunters and animals not in season to avoid killing animal not intended to be killed. Depending on the area you’re hunting in the rules of hunting are different for each state. Being in adherence with the hunting and camping

Page 6: Green Thumb Weekly (Ketchem

laws of each state. When making a fire be careful about the surrounding materi-al that might catch fire. Make sure the fire isn’t too big to control and always have water on standby to put it out if nec-essary.

BE CONSIDERATE

Be aware of illegally tres-passing on private land and designated hunting grounds. Being considerate of the land and not destroying parts of the environment. Destruction can be in many forms such as air pollutants through burning chemicals or plastics, chop-ping down trees, polluting the ground, and many more ways to disrupt nature. In the Boy Scouts it is protocol to always leave the campsite with no trace behind, almost like no one was there. Essentially keeping in mind of your activi-ty and things you might do that might harm the environment. Being mindful and considerate of nature While being considerate to the environment you must always be considerate to other campers, hikers, hunters, and other outdoorsman. When you encounter another person in nature respect them as much as you can unless they give you a reason not to.

BE CONSERVATION MINDED

Recycle, the term means to reuse through a cycle of for-

mation. Certain material can be recycled efficiently enough that it can be recycled many times such as plastics, glass, paper, metals and many more materials. In the outdoors recycling water is essential to survival and finding a good source of water when you are without is a first priority. To be conservation minded a person much appreciate all the bene-fits nature has given us and not take it for granted. Resources are not unlimited. Conserva-tion is how we use only what we need and use valuable ma-terials intelligently to ensure survival. The outdoorsman’s code the ethics all outdoorsman should know when being in nature. The consideration, and com-passion of the living envi-ronment of nature gives us a better understanding of the living and breathing Earth we live on. The 4 principles men-tioned will give you a remind-er of how you should respect nature and how you should live in nature. This code is essential to keeping the peace in the wilderness and keeping nature natural.

JANE GOODALL

Synopsis

Born on April 3, 1934, in London, England, Jane Goodall set out to Tanzania to study wild chimpan-zees by sitting amongst them, bypassing more rigid proce-dures and uncovering discover-ies about primate behavior that have continued to shape scien-tific discourse. She is a highly respected member of the world scientific community and is a staunch advocate of ecological preservation.

Early Life

Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England, to Mortimer Herbert Goodall, a businessperson and motor-rac-ing enthusiast, and the former Margaret Myfanwe Joseph, who wrote novels under the name Vanne Morris Goodall. Along with her sister, Judy, Good-all was reared in London and Bournemouth, England. Her fascination with animal behavior began in early childhood. In her

leisure time, she observed na-tive birds and animals, making extensive notes and sketches, and read widely in the literature of zoology and ethology. From an early age, she dreamed of traveling to Africa to observe exotic animals in their natural habitats.

Early Interest in Primates

Goodall attended the Uplands private school, receiving her school certificate in 1950 and a higher certificate in 1952. At age 18 she left school and found employment as a secretary at Oxford University. In her spare time, she worked at a Lon-don-based documentary film company to finance a long-an-ticipated trip to Africa. At the invitation of a childhood friend, she visited South Kinangop, Kenya. Through other friends, she soon met the famed an-thropologist Louis Leakey, then curator of the Coryndon Muse-um in Nairobi. Leakey hired her as a secretary and invited her

to participate in an anthropo-logical dig at the now famous Olduvai Gorge, a site rich in fossilized prehistoric remains of early ancestors of humans. In addition, Goodall was sent to study the vervet monkey, which lives on an island in Lake Victo-ria.

Leakey believed that a long-term study of the behavior of higher primates would yield important evolutionary infor-mation. He had a particular interest in the chimpanzee, the second most intelligent primate. Few studies of chimpanzees had been successful; either the size of the safari frightened the chimps, producing unnatural behaviors, or the observers spent too little time in the field to gain comprehensive knowl-edge. Leakey believed that Goodall had the proper temper-ament to endure long-term iso-lation in the wild. At his prompt-ing, she agreed to attempt such a study. Many experts objected to Leakey’s selection of Good-

all because she had no formal scientific education and lacked even a general college degree.

Observing Chimps in Africa

While Leakey searched for financial support for the pro-posed Gombe Reserve project, Goodall returned to England to work on an animal documen-tary for Granada Television. On July 16, 1960, accompanied by her mother and an African cook, she returned to Africa and established a camp on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in the Gombe Stream Reserve. Her first attempts to observe closely a group of chimpanzees failed; she could get no nearer than 500 yards before the chimps fled. After finding another suit-able group of chimpanzees to follow, she established a non-threatening pattern of obser-vation, appearing at the same time every morning on the high ground near a feeding area along the Kakaombe Stream valley. The chimpanzees soon tolerated her presence and, within a year, allowed her to move as close as 30 feet to their feeding area. After two years of seeing her every day, they showed no fear and often came to her in search of bananas.

Discoveries

Goodall used her newfound acceptance to establish what she termed the “banana club,” a daily systematic feeding meth-

od she used to gain trust and to obtain a more thorough under-standing of everyday chimpan-zee behavior. Using this method, she became closely acquainted with more than half of the re-serve’s 100 or more chimpan-zees. She imitated their behav-iors, spent time in the trees, and ate their foods. By remaining in almost constant contact with the chimps, she discovered a num-ber of previously unobserved behaviors. She noted that chimps have a complex social system, complete with ritualized behaviors and primitive but dis-cernible communication meth-ods, including a primitive “lan-guage” system containing more than 20 individual sounds. She is credited with making the first recorded observations of chim-panzees eating meat and using and making tools. Tool making was previously thought to be an exclusively human trait, used, until her discovery, to distin-guish humans from animals. She also noted that chimpanzees throw stones as weapons, use touch and embraces to comfort one another, and develop long-term familial bonds. The male plays no active role in family life but is part of the group’s social stratification. The chimpanzee “caste” system places the domi-nant males at the top. The lower castes often act obsequiously in their presence, trying to ingrati-ate themselves to avoid possible harm. The male’s rank is often related to the intensity of his en-trance performance at feedings and other gatherings.

Ethologists had long believed that chimps were exclusively vegetarian. Goodall witnessed chimps stalking, killing, and eating large insects, birds, and some bigger animals, including baby baboons and bushbacks (small antelopes). On one occa-sion, she recorded acts of can-nibalism. In another instance, she observed chimps inserting blades of grass or leaves into termite hills to lure worker or soldier termites onto the blade. Sometimes, in true toolmaker fashion, they modified the grass to achieve a better fit. Then they used the grass as a long-han-dled spoon to eat the termites.

Marriage

In 1962 Baron Hugo van Lawick, a Dutch wildlife photogra-pher, was sent to Africa by the National Geographic Society to film Goodall at work. The assignment ran longer than anticipated; Goodall and van Lawick were married on March 28, 1964. Their European hon-eymoon marked one of the rare occasions on which Goodall was absent from Gombe Stream. Her other trips abroad were necessary to fulfill residency requirements at Cambridge University, where she received a Ph.D. in ethology in 1965, be-coming only the eighth person in the university’s long history who was allowed to pursue a Ph.D. without first earning a baccalaureate degree. Her doctoral thesis, “Behavior of the

12

Page 13: Green Thumb Weekly (Ketchem

Free-Ranging Chimpanzee,” detailed her first five years of study at the Gombe Reserve.

Van Lawick’s film, Miss Good-all and the Wild Chimpanzees, was first broadcast on Amer-ican television on December 22, 1965. The film introduced the shy, determined Goodall to a wide audience. Goodall, van Lawick (along with their son, Hugo, born in 1967), and the chimpanzees soon became a staple of American and British public television. Through these programs, Goodall challenged scientists to redefine the long-held “differences” between humans and other primates.

Impact on Africa

Goodall’s fieldwork led to the publication of numerous articles and five major books. She was known and respected first in scientific circles and, through the media, became a minor celebrity. In the Shadow of Man, her first major text, appeared in 1971. The book, essentially a field study of chimpanzees, effectively bridged the gap between scientific treatise and popular entertainment. Her vivid prose brought the chimps to life, although her tendency to attribute human behaviors and names to chimpanzees struck some critics being as manip-ulative. Her writings reveal an animal world of social drama, comedy, and tragedy where distinct and varied personalities interact and sometimes clash.

From 1970-1975, Goodall held a visiting professorship in psy-chiatry at Stanford University. In 1973 she was appointed honor-ary visiting professor of Zool-ogy at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, a position she still holds. Her marriage to van Lawick over, she wed Der-ek Bryceson, a former member of Parliament, in 1973. After attending a 1986 conference in Chicago that focused on the ethical treatment of chimpan-zees, she began directing her energies toward educating the public about the wild chimpan-zee’s endangered habitat and about the unethical treatment of chimpanzees that are used for scientific research.

To preserve the wild chimpan-zee’s environment, Goodall encourages African nations to develop nature-friendly tourism programs, a measure that makes wildlife into a profitable re-source. She actively works with business and local governments to promote ecological respon-sibility. Her efforts on behalf of captive chimpanzees have taken her around the world on a number of lecture tours. She outlined her position strongly in her 1990 book Through a Win-dow: “The more we learn of the true nature of nonhuman ani-mals, especially those with com-plex brains and corresponding complex social behaviour, the more ethical concerns are raised regarding their use in the service of man--whether this be

in entertainment, as ‘pets,’ for food, in research laboratories or any of the other uses to which we subject them. This concern is sharpened when the usage in question leads to intense physi-cal or mental suffering--as is so often true with regard to vivi-section.”

Accomplishments

Goodall’s stance is that scien-tists must try harder to find al-ternatives to the use of animals in research. She has openly declared her opposition to mil-itant animal rights groups who engage in violent or destruc-tive demonstrations. Extremists on both sides of the issue, she believes, polarize thinking and make constructive dialogue nearly impossible. While she is reluctantly resigned to the continuation of animal research, she feels that young scientists must be educated to treat an-imals more compassionately. “By and large,” she has written, “students are taught that it is ethically acceptable to perpe-trate, in the name of science, what, from the point of view of animals, would certainly qualify as torture.”

Goodall’s efforts to educate people about the ethical treat-ment of animals extends to young children as well. Her 1989 book, The Chimpanzee Family Book, was written spe-cifically for children, to convey a new, more humane view of wildlife. The book received the

PICK IT UPby John Irwin

If you picked up this magazine more than likely you love the outdoors. You enjoy what the outside world brings to you in terms of fun, entertainment, and relaxation. What happens though if one day those beau-tiful outdoors are gone? What will you do if you favorite hik-ing trail disappears and turns into a dump for waste? What will you do if the woods sur-rounding your favorite hunting spot are cut down leaving you with a barren plain? This is why the introduction of one small step in our everyday lifestyle could save our love for the out-doors…recycling. Many of us know or have an understanding of what recy-cling is but what does it mean for someone who is involved with it on a normal work day? Craig Adams of the Chambers-burg Waste Paper Company gave us several insights on the importance of recycling and the business surrounding it. He informed us that recycling for him and the company was, “Looking at what we are throw-ing away, looking at what we can pull out of the garbage, looking at what we are putting in the ground, and determin-ing what to reuse and create

20

Page 21: Green Thumb Weekly (Ketchem

new items like boxes, paper, toilet paper and more.” Craig’s reason for the importance of recycling was, “If we can get three or four uses out of the same material we have already generated, that is three or four times we don’t have to find new minerals and compounds from the earth.” Some individuals ques-tion how “earth friendly” re-cycling really is especially when it pertains to the plants that do the recycling. Adams states, “The industry itself is all about sustainability. Recycling is just a small part of that. The machines that we use now are all about eco-friendliness. The oils that used to fuel them, like diesel, are being changed to more “green” fuels. However just like anything else it does leave a footprint.” Even though there may be a “footprint” left behind by the recycling plants, the size of the footprint is a lot smaller when compared to a world without recycling. What can be recycled? Almost any object you pick up has a small recycle logo on it. This means it can be broken down and reused again. Craig mentioned that although most objects can be broken down that doesn’t necessarily mean there is a demand for it in that area. “Based on your geo-graphic location and the mills around you strongly deter-mines what is recycled. It’s all about what is feasible and eco-nomical…but roughly about 80 to 85 percent of our goods are recyclable post consumer.” When specifically asked about the paper recycling company he worked for, Adams stated

that “Only about 1 to 1.5 per-cent of the material that comes to the factory is rejected due to contamination.” That means al-most 100 percent of the paper goods and plastics (categories 1 through 7) are recycled and turned back into goods for consumer use.

It’s not hard to read in-between the lines to understand that recycling is a very important part of sustaining our environ-ment. Craig ended by saying, “By taking care of the earth, it will in turn take care of us.” In order to do our part to make sure we can all continue to en-joy the great outdoors here are some tips to keep in mind:1. Be Cautious- What is a need/necessity compared to what is a want?2. Be Aware- What is the process that the item of pur-chase will go through? How much of it will be considered contaminated and thrown away for non-reuse?3. Be Smart- Can this be reused or recycled again?4. Be Active- Recycle items by putting them in correct fa-cilities.

In some areas of landfills the landfill has become the land.
