GREEN NANOTRIBOLOGY: CHALLENGES DEVELOPMENT AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES Abstract : Present day the earth is facing many serious environmental problems and manufacturing industries are the which are mainly contributed for such problems. Adopting, environment friendly processes like optimum design, operation, reduced energy consumption and lessened environmental impact preserving basic resources and material to have a sustainable growth of man-kind. Eco-tribology is one when tribological principles are coupled with the manufacturing processes to overcome these problems. Green nanotribology is sustainable technology dealing with friction, wear and lubrication of interacting surfaces in relative motion at the nanometer scale. The principle goal of green Nano-tribology involves the continous improvement of product performances and maintaining a good balance with the environment. The present paper deals about the challenges faced in the development of a eco-friendly manufacturing and their future opportunities. A UK tribologist, Prof. Jost found that the economic benefits would be £8 – £10 billion, out of which 60-70% would be energy related. He found annually one third of energy produced globally is utilized in overcoming the friction and wear.. Green nano tribology is the science and technology of the tribological aspects of ecological balance and of environmental and biological impacts at nano level. Its main objectives are the saving of energy and materials and the enhancement of the environment and the quality of life. Nanotribology deals with nanostructured surfaces, nanoagents (ingredients, additives) and nanoprocesses these three components need to be taken into account in the concept development of green nanotribology. Green nanotribology is sustainable technology dealing with friction, wear and lubrication of interacting surfaces in relative motion at the nanometer scale.Nanotribological studies are needed to develop fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena on a small scale and to study interfacial phenomena in micro/nanostructures used in magnetic storage systems, micro/nanoelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), and other applications.Green-Nanotribology:
