THE BUSINESS CASE FOR SUSTAINABILITY
2
Agenda
What is the environmental impact of ICT?
How can we reduce it?
What are the benefits for business?
3
ICT Industry global emissions
The ICT industry is responsible for around 2 – 2.5% of global greenhouse gas
emissions according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
ICT usage is expected to
expand rapidly over the
coming decade, especially
in developing countries.
As a result, the ICT
contribution to global
greenhouse gas emissions
is projected to nearly
double by 2020, to 4%
Note – above analysis is based on a global estimate of 0.9 Gigatonne of CO2 equivalent

Lifecycle thinking creates resource-efficient products

Lifecycle phase 1 – raw materials

Lifecycle phase 3 – packaging and logistics
Modal shift has the potential to
dramatically reduce transport
emissions. Appropriate mode
depends on product category –
eg ocean too slow for
perishables
Careful design of product
packaging balances packaging
impact with the need to protect
the product. Polystyrene can be
avoided by use of pulp mould or
cardboard engineering

Lifecycle phase 4 – use
Even with resource-efficient design, electrical products have high use phase
impacts due to energy consumption. Consumables also contribute substantially
to use-phase emissions (eg print cartridges, batteries, etc)

Phase 4 – use impacts and the user

Conventional laser printers adopt a “razor and blade” business model
Designing complexity into the consumable cartridge creates
a lucrative ongoing revenue stream
18
Discarding all this when your printer runs out of toner is like discarding your car engine every time you run out of fuel
Kyocera consumables contain only toner – the complex components are permanently sited in the machine

Independent analysis proves that resource-efficient laser printer design doesn’t
just reduce waste, it also cuts running costs leading to improve cost of ownership
