Employees and guests alike are reducing waste through various avenues provided by the resort. Between Jan. 1 and Sep. 8, 2014, we have accomplished the following: The single stream recycling program has prevented the disposal of 17.28 tons of paper, plastic and glass. Cardboard recycling totaled 47.6 tons of cardboard. We have recycled 328 batteries and 2,502 light bulbs. We recycled 4,700 lbs. of cooking oil, used to create biofuels. Each year we collect and store more than 1,000 gallons of motor oil from the vehicle maintenance area and use it to fuel heaters in the snowmaking maintenance area. Energy Conservation By replacing numerous light fixtures throughout the resort and adding the SolarBee in Lake Tahoe, we are conserving energy resort-wide. Installed the SolarBee solar panel in Lake Tahoe, to help temper the water for more efficient snowmaking. Replaced numerous lighting fixtures and more than 3,000 inefficient T12 fluorescent light bulbs in favor of T5 light bulbs, reducing the average wattage used from 75 to 25. Converted 300 exit signs from 40-watts to 1-watt bulbs. Grand Ballroom renovations and new light fixtures resulted in total watts used from12,448w to 2,968. Main Lodge hallway renovations dropped watts used from 1,536 to 288. Snowmaking & Slope Activities Created a virtually closed loop water system for snowmaking. Captured in a series of collector ponds at the base of the mountain, which are filled from rain, run-off and melting snow Installed energy-efficient, low-emission air compressors Developed snow guns to achieve the most efficient water to air ratio in the industry and significantly lower the need for compressed air. Replaced diesel compressors with energy efficient electric compressors. The old compressors typically used 100,000 gallons of fuel each ski season. Identified areas to run low-energy, gravity-fed snow guns to make snow without operating pumps. Water Usage In addition to conserving energy, Seven Springs is changing the way we use our most precious resource - water. Our efforts to reduce water usage have saved millions of gallons of water. By adjusting washing machine cycles, the resort saved 311,784 gallons of water between March 2013 and August 2014. Reduced repetitive, unnecessary wash cycles, which saved 18 minutes and approximately 75 gallons per load. Changed more than 400 shower heads to low- flow models, reducing average flow from five gallons per minute to two and a half. Encourage guests to use towels and washcloths more than once and giving them the option of having their sheets replaced after their stay is complete. The installation of the shower heads, along with the linen service options and the closed- circuit snowmaking system, allows Seven Springs to save 3.6 million gallons of water annually. In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, constructed a rain garden to allow storm water to soak into the ground instead of flowing into storm drains and ultimately into streams. Runoff causes erosion, pollution and flooding. Developed a potable water system to recycle water by treating and returning it to drainage areas to recharge the sources.

GREEN INITIATIVES

Recycling & Waste ReductionSeven Springs is committed to sustainable forward-thinking practices through recycling and waste reduction. Employees and guests alike are reducing waste through various avenues provided by the resort. Between Jan. 1 and Sep. 8, 2014, we have accomplished the following:

• The single stream recycling program has prevented the disposal of 17.28 tons of paper, plastic and glass.

• Cardboard recycling totaled 47.6 tons of cardboard.• We have recycled 328 batteries and 2,502 light bulbs.• We recycled 4,700 lbs. of cooking oil, used to create

biofuels.• Each year we collect and store more than 1,000 gallons

of motor oil from the vehicle maintenance area and use it to fuel heaters in the snowmaking maintenance area.

Energy ConservationBy replacing numerous light fixtures throughout the resort and adding the SolarBee in Lake Tahoe, we are conserving energy resort-wide.

• Installed the SolarBee solar panel in Lake Tahoe, to help temper the water for more efficient snowmaking.

• Replaced numerous lighting fixtures and more than 3,000 inefficient T12 fluorescent light bulbs in favor of T5 light bulbs, reducing the average wattage used from 75 to 25.

• Converted 300 exit signs from 40-watts to 1-watt bulbs.• Grand Ballroom renovations and new light fixtures

resulted in total watts used from12,448w to 2,968.• Main Lodge hallway renovations dropped watts used

from 1,536 to 288.

Snowmaking & Slope Activities

• Created a virtually closed loop water system for snowmaking.

• Captured in a series of collector ponds at the base of the mountain, which are filled from rain, run-off and melting snow

• Installed energy-efficient, low-emission air compressors

• Developed snow guns to achieve the most efficient water to air ratio in the industry and significantly lower the need for compressed air.

• Replaced diesel compressors with energy efficient electric compressors. The old compressors typically used 100,000 gallons of fuel each ski season.

• Identified areas to run low-energy, gravity-fed snow guns to make snow without operating pumps.

Water UsageIn addition to conserving energy, Seven Springs is changing the way we use our most precious resource - water. Our efforts to reduce water usage have saved millions of gallons of water.

• By adjusting washing machine cycles, the resort saved 311,784 gallons of water between March 2013 and August 2014.

• Reduced repetitive, unnecessary wash cycles, which saved 18 minutes and approximately 75 gallons per load.

• Changed more than 400 shower heads to low-flow models, reducing average flow from five gallons per minute to two and a half.

• The installation of the shower heads, along with the linen service options and the closed-circuit snowmaking system, allows Seven Springs to save 3.6 million gallons of water annually.

• In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, constructed a rain garden to allow storm water to soak into the ground instead of flowing into storm drains and ultimately into streams. Runoff causes erosion, pollution and flooding.

• Developed a potable water system to recycle water by treating and returning it to drainage areas to recharge the sources.

Rain GardenIn the spring of 2009, Seven Springs Mountain Resort further demonstrated its commitment to protecting and sustaining the beautiful environment that surrounds Pennsylvania’s largest resort.

Seven Springs partnered with the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society to demonstrate how even the installation of a rain garden can help reverse years of damage to an otherwise overlooked area.

National Environmentalism AwardThe National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) presented Seven Springs Mountain Resort with the 2009 Silver Eagle Award for Excellence in Water Conservation/Water Quality by a ski resort. The award hails Pennsylvania’s largest ski resort for its overall water usage and conservation techniques.

With the help of the Natural Resources Defense Council, a nationally-recognized authority on environmental studies, Seven Springs took a look at the resort’s overall resource and water usage and identified the areas that had the highest impact to overall consumption. These areas were its guest rooms and internal water usage.

Seven Springs was also commended as a finalist for the Silver Eagle Award for Excellence in Energy Conservation/Clean Energy for its innovative snowmaking technique involving a solar panel.

Paper UsageSeven Springs is committed to purchasing and using post-consumer paper products and eliminating the use of Styrofoam products.

• Purchase and support post-consumer products• At the golf course and in the ski lodge, meals are

served in reusable baskets with recyclable liners.• We have also switched to 100% recycled toilet

paper and 45% recycled material hand towels in our restrooms throughout the resort.

• Eliminated the use of Styrofoam products in favor of biodegradable products.

• Through our aggressive waste reduction plan, Seven Springs prevented the disposal of 1.2 million pieces of Styrofoam. While Styrofoam takes over 100 years to decompose, the new biodegradable containers can decompose by 64% in just 180 days.
