FORTE, LYNCH AND NOW CHARLESStopping the run is critical to Packers successBy Paul ImigFor Green & Gold Express

The Packers knew their run de-fense was going to be tested at the beginning of this season. With Matt Forte in Week 1, followed by Mar-shawn Lynch and Jamaal Charles, Green Bay was going to find out quickly if it had made the right off-season adjustments.

So far, the Packers have failed one test and aced the other.

Forte had 24 carries for 141 yards (5.9 average) and a touchdown. Thats far too much.

Lynch, however, was held in check. Despite Lynchs dominance against the Packers last season (45 carries, 267 yards, three touchdowns in two games), he could only mus-ter 41 yards on 15 rushing attempts (2.7 average) at Lambeau Field last weekend.

It was a good barometer to see where we were at, linebacker Clay Matthews said of the teams job on Lynch.

Now, its Charles turn to see what he can do.

Marshawn is a great back, Ja-maal Charles is a great back, head coach Mike McCarthy said. But theyre different. They have differ-ent styles, and you pay attention to that.

Jamaal is an inside and outside runner; tremendous quickness and vision, good player out of the back-field, good receiver. And has the high-end speed to finish a lot of runs. Hell be a big challenge for us.

In 2014, Green Bay was either 30th, 31st or 32nd in the leagues run defense rankings through Week 10. In other words, the Packers were

statistically one of the three worst NFL defenses at stopping the run for more than half of last season.

The Packers showed improve-ment near the end of 2014, finishing the year ranked 23rd against the run. Green Bay also concluded the 2013 season ranked 23rd.

Even with Lynch not having his usual success, the Packers enter Week 3 of the 2015 regular season ranked 31st in the NFL in rushing yards allowed (308) and 31st in yards per carry average (5.3). One reason for those lackluster numbers is Se-ahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who rushed 10 times for 78 yards.

As Green Bay gets ready for the Chiefs on Monday Night Football,

they wont have to worry about Kan-sas City quarterback Alex Smith running around. Smith has aver-aged just 13.1 rushing yards per game throughout his career.

Charles can be a game-changer with his explosive rushes, though. Hes a two-time first-team All-Pro (2010, 2013) and was a second-team All-Pro in 2012. Charles has also been to three consecutive Pro Bowls.

If he sees some daylight, he can literally take it the distance every time he touches the ball, nose tack-le B.J. Raji said. Were very aware of that, and were excited about the challenge.

    Charles and Forte both entered

into the NFL in 2008, and Charles has only once had more receiving yards than Forte in any season. But in a Forte-esque way, Charles can affect the game with his pass-catch-ing ability.

Everyone acknowledges how good Jamaal is, Raji said. Any good coach, any good coordinator is going to try to get him the ball as much as possible.

Matthews position switch played a significant role in the Packers turnaround in run defense last sea-son. And against Seattle last week, Matthews played every snap at inside linebacker and didnt rush

ON THE COVERMike Daniels (76) and B.J. Raji (90) work to stop Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch (24). Green Bays defense will face another tough runner Monday when the Packers face Jamaal Charles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

  • NFL Power Rankings

    1. New England Patriots (Re-cord: 2-0; Previous Rank: 1)

After an impressive Week 1 win for the Steelers, the Patriots fol-lowed it up by scoring 40 points on the road against a high-quality, Rex Ryan-led Bills defense. New England is the reigning Super Bowl champions and remains the team to beat in the NFL so far this season.

    2. Green Bay Packers (Re-cord: 2-0; Previous Rank: 2)

The Packers finally got a win over Seattle, albeit eight months later than they wouldve liked. Aaron Rodgers showed why hes the league MVP, dominating the Seahawks defense despite con-stant pressure and limited healthy weapons alongside him.

    3. Arizona Cardinals (Record: 2-0; Previous Rank: 3)

Both of Arizonas wins are against 0-2 teams (New Orleans and Chicago). But the Cardinals easily disposed of both of them, leading the NFL in point differen-tial at plus-37.

    4. Denver Broncos (Record: 2-0; Previous Rank: 5)

Peyton Mannings arm looks like its just about done, and Den-vers offense hasnt been good as a whole. However, through two weeks, there hasnt been a bet-ter defense in the league than the Broncos.

    5. Seattle Seahawks (Record: 0-2; Previous Rank: 7)

An 0-2 team ranked fifth? Yes. Because like the Packers in the past three seasons, a slow start doesnt always mean a bad team. Now the Seahawks have Kam

Chancellor back and get to face the Bears and Lions in consecu-tive weeks.

    6. Atlanta Falcons (Record: 2-0; Previous Rank: 10)

Neither was decisive a win, but Atlanta beat two NFC East teams (Eagles and Giants) to begin its season. Julio Jones has been the NFLs best wide receiver through two weeks.

    7. Pittsburgh Steelers (Re-cord: 1-1; Previous Rank: 16)

The Steelers followed up their Week 1 loss at New England by de-stroying San Francisco, 43-18. And now Pittsburgh gets LeVeon Bell back.

    8. Cincinnati Bengals (Re-cord: 2-0; Previous Rank: 14)

The Bengals have been good on both sides of the ball in their open-ing wins over Oakland and San Diego. They could improve to 3-0 with a road win against struggling Baltimore.

    9. Kansas City Chiefs (Record: 1-1; Previous Rank: 8)

Kansas Citys defense has been great through two weeks. The Chiefs will have had 11 days off be-tween games when they travel to Lambeau Field on Monday night.

    10. St. Louis Rams (Record: 1-1; Previous Rank: 6)

The Rams followed up their very impressive Week 1 win over Seattle by losing at Washington by 14 points. Huh? Either way, St. Louis is poised to dominate on de-fense most weeks.

    11. New York Jets (Record: 2-0; Previous Rank: 21)

The Jets have outscored their opponents 51-17 so far this season. Who saw that coming?

    12. Buffalo Bills (Record: 1-1; Previous Rank: 4)

That Week 1 win for the Bills over Indianapolis doesnt look as good now that the Colts strug-gled again. Buffalo seemed over-matched against the Patriots in Week 2.

    13. Carolina Panthers (Re-cord: 2-0; Previous Rank: 20)

Carolina could easily be 4-0 soon with upcoming games against New Orleans and Tampa Bay. But would wins against those opponents, plus the Panthers two wins over the Jaguars and Tex-ans, really make anyone believe Carolina is a major threat in the NFC?

    14. San Diego Chargers (Re-cord: 1-1; Previous Rank: 15)

San Diego has been the defi-nition of average through two games. That includes a score dif-ferential of 0 (52 points scored, 52 points allowed).

    15. Dallas Cowboys (Record: 2-0; Previous Rank: 9)

If you want to believe in a Bran-don Weeden/Matt Cassel duo at quarterback for the next two months (especially when they dont have Dez Bryant to throw to), go ahead. The Cowboys de-fense is good enough to keep them in games, though.

    16. Minnesota Vikings (Re-cord: 1-1; Previous Rank: 23)

Week 2 looked a lot more like Week 1 shouldve looked, with Adrian Peterson getting 29 carries rather than 10. Minnesotas win over Detroit should establish (at least for now) the Vikings as the second-best team in the division.

    17. Miami Dolphins (Record: 1-1; Previous Rank: 11)

On paper, the Dolphins should be better than the way theyve played. That means theyll either

under-achieve all season or theyll soon get it together and start a winning streak.

    18. New York Giants (Record: 0-2; Previous Rank: 19)

Yes, the Giants are 0-2. But theyve lost by a total of five points to two teams that are 2-0.

    19. Washington Redskins (Re-cord: 1-1; Previous Rank: 29)

A 14-point victory over St. Louis was a quality win for Washington in Week 2.

    20. Jacksonville Jaguars (Re-cord: 1-1; Previous Rank: 31)

The Jaguars bounced back from an ugly Week 1 performance to beat the in-state rival Dolphins.

    21. Indianapolis Colts (Re-cord: 0-2; Previous Rank: 12)

The Colts wont be this bad all season, right? With Andrew Luck behind center, Indianapolis should soon snap out of its funk.

    22. Tennessee Titans (Record: 1-1; Previous Rank: 25)

Marcus Mariota gets the head-lines, but Tennessees defense has proved thus far to be quite good.

    23. Detroit Lions (Record: 0-2; Previous Rank: 22)

Both of Detroits losses have come on the road. But the Lions could easily fall to 0-5 as their schedule now presents the Se-ahawks, Broncos and Cardinals.

    24. Oakland Raiders (Record: 1-1; Previous Rank: 30)

Oakland began its season by trailing 33-0 to Cincinnati. But a Week 2 win over the Ravens sug-gests the Raiders have a chance to be a decent team this season.

    25. San Francisco 49ers (Re-cord: 1-1; Previous Rank: 17)

After a somewhat surprising Week 1 dominant performance over Minnesota, the 49ers fell

back to Earth hard by losing to the Steelers by 25 points.

    26. Cleveland Browns (Re-cord: 1-1; Previous Rank: 32)

Josh McCown suffers a concus-sion. Johnny Manziel gets Cleve-land a Week 2 win. McCown clears concussion protocol and gets the starting job back. Lets see where this goes for a while.

    27. Philadelphia Eagles (Re-cord: 0-2; Previous Rank: 13)

Panic time in Philadelphia? The Eagles offense was embar-rassed on national television in Week 2.

    28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Record: 1-1; Previous Rank: 28)

Jameis Winston got his first NFL win. All things considered, though, the Buccaneers dont look like a good team yet this season.

    29. Baltimore Ravens (Re-cord: 0-2; Previous Rank: 18)

A surprising 0-2 start for a usu-ally dependable team. Allowing 37 points to Oakland and losing that game was obviously a disappoint-ment for the Ravens.

    30. New Orleans Saints (Re-cord: 0-2; Previous Rank: 24)

Drew Brees is banged up, and the Saints dont look like theyre going anywhere this season.

    31. Houston Texans (Record: 0-2; Previous Rank: 26)

Houstons offense has been bad regardless of whos at quarterback.

    32. Chicago Bears (Record: 0-2; Previous Rank: 27)

The Bears started the season by losing two home games. Now, they continue on for a couple of weeks without an injured Jay Cut-ler. Hey, at least Chicago seems to be in good shape to get the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft.

once from the outside. It likely isnt a coincidence that Green Bay was vastly im-proved against Lynch with Matthews playing full-time on the inside.

I think my impact comes in a different scale, as far as instead of hits, hurries and pressures, sacks on quarter-backs, it comes from sound run defense and things like that, Matthews said. I think statistically, you have to take a step back sometimes. You might not get the sacks, or

some of the plays youre used to seeing, but I think as a whole whenever youre able to start out 2-0 against two very good teams and hope-fully make it 3-0, it speaks to the defense and putting our best 11 players out there.

While the Packers game-plan to stop Charles, Kansas

City doesnt know whether it will have to deal with stop-ping a different elite NFL running back. Eddie Lacy played eight snaps Sunday before exiting with an ankle injury. He did not practice at all Thursday.

The extra day between games could help Lacy be

healthy enough to play. But if Lacys ankle isnt ready, James Starks will step into the starting role and will try to impact the outcome as much as Charles.

(Starks) has a great preparation, and I think over the years hes learned what it takes to be a good team-

mate and the next guy up, quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. There have been years where hes gone a couple of games without playing and then Eddie gets a concussion against Washington (in 2013) and (Starks) comes in and has a 100-yard game. Thats just what he does.

The Green Bay Packers are 7-point fa-vorites for Monday nights game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Heres the breakdown.

When the Packers have the ballWith Eddie Lacys status in doubt with

a sprained ankle, look for the Packers to attack the Chiefs perimeter in the passing game. Based on the first two games, that looks like a good matchup for Aaron Rodg-ers and Co.

In Week 1, Houstons wide receivers caught 20 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns, with DeAndre Hopkins (nine catches, 98 yards, two touchdowns) and Nate Washington (six catches, 105 yards) doing most of the damage. In Week 2, Den-vers wide receivers caught 20 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns, with De-maryius Thomas (eight catches, 116 yards) and Emmanuel Sanders (eight catches, 87 yards, two touchdowns) carrying the load.

The key for Green Bay will be protecting Rodgers. The Chiefs have an excellent one-two pass-rushing punch with outside line-backers Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. Houston led the NFL with a team-record

22 sacks last season and he has three in the first two games of this season. Hali, in his 10th season, has 79.5 career sacks.

The Packers offensive tackles, David Bakhtiari and Don Barclay, gave up a com-bined two sacks and 19 pressures against Seattle, according to Pro Football Focus. The interior of the line held Seattles defen-sive tackles in check, which allowed Rodg-ers to get outside the pocket. Nose tackle Dontari Poe had six sacks last season, so it will be critical to prevent him from collaps-ing the pocket.

In the secondary, cornerback Marcus Peters, with an interception in each game and a league-high seven passes defensed, is this years first-round pick and safety Eric Berry is back after being diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in November.

When the Chiefs have the ballChiefs quarterback Alex Smith, who for-

ever will be linked to Rodgers as the man the 49ers picked with the No. 1 overall se-lection in 2005, is off to a good start with 65.6 percent accuracy and a 90.7 passer rating. Smith is 20-1 when his passer rating tops 100.

He gets a big helping hand from Pro

Bowl running back Jamaal Charles. In Chiefs history, he ranks first with 7,038 rushing yards and second with 9,352 yards from scrimmage. Since the start of the 2013 season, Charles leads the league with 35 total touchdowns.

Green Bays run defense ranks 31st in the league with 154.0 rushing yards per game and 5.3 yards allowed per carry. However, that unit held Marshawn Lynch to 41 rushing yards and 2.7 yards per carry on Sunday night.

In one of the strangest stats in the league, Kansas City hasnt thrown a touchdown pass to a wide receiver since 2013. Through two games, the Chiefs re-ceivers led by Jeremy Maclin, who was acquired from the Eagles have caught just 15 passes for 156 yards. That streak is bound to end sometime. In four sea-sons with coach Andy Reid in Philadel-phia, Maclin caught 26 touchdown pass-es. Until that happens, tight end Travis Kelce is the man to watch. He has team-high figures of 10 catches, 164 yards and two touchdowns.

The offensive line leaves plenty to be desired with left tackle Donald Stephenson (third round, 2012), left guard Ben Grubbs

(first round, 2007; acquired for fifth-round pick in March), center Mitch Morse (sec-ond round, 2015), right guard Laurent Du-vernay-Tardif (sixth round, 2014) and right tackle Eric Fisher (first round, 2012). Fish-er, the No. 1 overall pick a few years ago, couldnt hack it at left tackle and is now on the right side.

Special teamsKansas City ranked eighth in the annual

Dallas Morning News rankings last year while Green Bay was 32nd. Since the start of the 2013 season, the Chiefs rank No. 1 with a 28.8-yard average on kickoff returns, No. 3 with an 11.8-yard average on punt re-turns and No. 1 with a total of six return touchdowns. Green Bay, however, is off to an excellent start and won its battle with hot-shot rookie Tyler Lockett last week.

CoachingGreen Bays Mike McCarthy owns a 3-1

record against Reid. McCarthy was an as-sistant coach for the Chiefs for six seasons in the 1990s. Reid spent seven seasons as an assistant with Green Bay before leading the Eagles from 1999 through 2012 and tak-ing over the Chiefs in 2013.

Packers NotebookBy Green & Gold Express Staff

Rodgers, Smith draft linkIn 2005, San Francisco chose Alex

Smith as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Aaron Rodgers fell all the way to No. 24.

The rest, as they say, is history.Rodgers is authoring a record-

setting career. As Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers get ready to host Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, Rodgers is in the midst of a remarkable streak.

Since he threw an interception on Dec. 2, 2012, Rodgers numbers at Lambeau Field are ridiculous: 371-of-539 accuracy (68.8 percent) for 4,906 yards with 43 touchdowns and no interceptions for a 124.0 passer rating. Thats a stretch of 545 con-secutive passes without an intercep-tion and 43 touchdown passes since his last interception. Both are league records.

I think hes probably a pretty good player and does a pretty good job, Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters in Kansas City this week. Youve got to start there, right?

Smith hasnt been awful. Ac-quired before the 2013 season, Smith

won 19 games in his first two seasons in Kansas City. Thats more than Joe Montana (17) and Len Dawson (16). Since 2011, Smith boasts a record of 39-17-1, with that .692 winning per-centage good for fifth in the league. And he actually has the upper hand on Rodgers in one aspect. Since the start of the 2010 season, hes thrown a league-low 35 interceptions. Rodg-ers is next with 36.

More home cookingWith their huge win over Seattle,

the Packers continued their Lam-beau Field dominance. They went 8-0 at home during the regular sea-son in 2014. Including Sundays win, the Packers have a plus-165 point dif-ferential during that span, 28 points better than New Englands runner-up plus-137.

For the Chiefs, this will be a huge test after giving away last weeks home game against Denver.

We love the challenge of playing good football teams. Thats what we love, Reid said. We consider our-selves to be a good football team. We love the opportunity to play good football teams, so I think thats why youre in this thing, to challenge

yourself. You work like crazy to be a good team yourself and you cherish those opportunities to be challenged. Thats what kind of game this will be.

New wrinkle on offenseWith the offense having stalled

and Seattle in front 17-16, the Pack-ers turned to a four-receiver, one-tight end set to start the fourth quar-ter. It worked. With Randall Cobb and rookie Ty Montgomery lining up at running back at times, the Pack-ers drove 80 yards in 10 plays for the go-ahead touchdown. Rodgers went 8 of 8 for 78 yards, including three passes for 24 yards to Montgomery and the 5-yard scoring toss to tight end Richard Rodgers.

Teams have to make a decision as to how they want to play it with what defensive personnel group, said assistant head coach Tom Cle-ments. And we feel with our receiv-ers, we can get some matchups that are favorable to us.

Considering how well Mont-gomery played in extended snaps, theres a good chance that personnel group will be used for a series or two most games.

Dealing with successAfter an emotional win over Seat-

tle, Green Bay must avoid a letdown against the Chiefs. The Packers are the second-youngest team in the NFL, but McCarthy will lean on his messaging and a veteran corps to make sure that doesnt happen.

The age has nothing to do with the message, coach Mike McCarthy said. We are what we are. Weve got two wins, were where we want to be, but were also a team that has a lot of growth in front of us. So, were fo-cused on ourselves, were focused on doing the things better that we know we can do better, and thats the way weve always operated.

Turnovers irk ReidGreen Bay is tied for fourth with

a plus-2 turnover margin while Kan-sas City is tied for 24th at minus-2. Only two teams have more give-aways than the Chiefs five. All five of those came in last weeks shock-ing loss to Denver, including Jamaal Charles fumble that was returned for the deciding touchdown with 27 seconds remaining.

Im a little hard on the turn-overs. Im not big on those, Reid

said. I mean, there are times where the helmet hits right on the ball. We dont make any excuses for that, thats not what we do. I would tell you that most turn-overs, most of the time, you can take care of. Is there an exception in there? Yeah, but most of the time, you can fix those and take care of those.

Berrys returnIn one of the feel-good stories, Pro

Bowl safety Eric Berry is back with the Chiefs.

In November, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. After six rounds of chemotherapy, Berry was deemed cancer-free in June. He was cleared for practice in July and made his first start last week.

I just think that hes stepped back in and hasnt said much, Reid said. He started off on special teams and hes kind of worked his way through that and gotten him-self back to where he can play. And were at it day in and day out so I think the guys appreciate his effort and what its all about, what he had to go through to get where hes at right now.

  • WOLF RIVER MEDIA 7FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2015GREEN & GOLD EXPRESS

In only the second week of the season, every phase of the Green Bay Packers game appears to be in high gear, including the head games.

The Packers not only are winning the battles on the lines of scrimmage, but they also are playing smart.

After the massively satisfying 27-17 win over Seattle last Sunday a vic-tory that broke a maddening three-game losing streak to the Seahawks, the Pack-ers spent zero time gloat-ing about it, almost wholly dismissing it as just another game.

It wasnt just another game, of course. It was a huge win against their nem-esis, a cathartic redemption nine months in the waiting.

Just another win, tight end Richard Rodgers in-sisted. Its only our second game; we have 14 more.

Linebacker Clay Mat-thews confirmed that it was

just another win in a long season.

Thats what youre sup-posed to say. It may not matter to make a harmless boast about knocking off a struggling Chicago team, as Packers coach Mike McCar-thy did before the opener, but its wise not to give an evenly matched opponent like Seattle any extra incen-tive in the event they meet again this season. Despite Seattles 0-2 start, dont rule out that possibility.

Hence, the respectful postgame talk about what a

    tough opponent the Se-ahawks are.

Had they told you pri-vately, the players were as ecstatic as the fans at Lam-beau Field to come away with the 27-17 win.

Almost from start to fin-ish, the game played out as Packer fans could only have hoped controlling the lines of scrimmage, moving the ball, winning referee chal-lenges and, through solid preparation and hustle, gen-erally having the intangibles go their way.

Therein lies the key. The cause for high optimism after Week 2 is that the Pack-ers have demonstrated a knack for understanding and doing whatever is necessary to win.

In the first-week win over a pesky Chicago team, what the Packers did, basically, was get serious in the fourth quarter. The Bears were never a serious threat to win the game.

Seattle was another story. The defending NFC cham-pion Seahawks had grabbed the momentum by scoring 14 straight points to lead 17-13, and with quarterback Russell Wilson having found some running room on the Packers defense, things were tensing up.

Then came the drive. After the Packers cut the deficit to 17-16 came the 80-yard drive so seamless and resolute that it looked like they willed it to happen. Quarterback Aaron Rodg-ers found receivers Randall Cobb, Ty Montgomery and Richard Rodgers open on various plays of the 10-play scoring march. Where the drive stands against oth-ers in Packers lore is up for discussion, but make no mistake of how huge it was Sunday night, and what it meant toward the rest of the season.

Rodgers caught the touchdown pass that capped

the drive, and also made a brilliant catch on the ensuing 2-point conversion that gave the Packers a 24-17 edge that they would not relinquish.

He was able to make both of those plays because he was in the game, still suited up, and not cooling his heels in the locker room after get-ting tossed out.

That honor went to Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright, who fought with Rod-gers on an earlier play with a bit too much conviction.

Just the heat of the mo-ment, tempers flared, Rodg-ers recalled, downplaying the scrap. He got thrown out, and that was it.

The guy who lost his cool showcasing his macho bona fides got bounced. The guy who kept his head stayed in the game and scored the winning points. The little things add up.

The Packers got contribu-tions from everyone, espe-cially the defense. It wouldnt

be much of a stretch to say the defensive line won the game. They set the tempo early, bottling up running back Marshawn Lynch, and made crucial stops late.

A week after giving up more than 100 yards in the first half to Chicagos Matt Forte, the Packers held the marauding Lynch to 41 yards on 15 carries, effectively stifling Seattles offense.

Theres no special grudge against this weeks opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs, but if youre really looking for one, you could try their last meeting. The Chiefs won that December 2011 game by a 19-14 score. It was cause for great merriment in the 1972 Miami Dolphins camp but a tough loss for the Packers, who had come into KC with a just another 13-0 record.

Chiefs QB Alex Smith was No. 1 overall pick in NFL draft by 49ers while Packers coach Mike Mc-Carthy was offensive coordinator in San Francisco. Smith has thrown 35 inter-

ceptions since 2010, fewest among NFL starting quarterbacks and one ahead of Packers Aaron Rodgers in second place. Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles needs one TD to tie Larry Johnson for third on franchise career TD list (61). Chiefs first in second-down conversions (44 percent) in NFL, last in third-down conversions (15 percent). LB Justin Houston tied with Dwight Freeney and J.J. Watt as fourth-fastest player in NFL history to 50 sacks, reaching mark in 61 career games. Rookie CB Marcus Peters has interception in each of first two NFL games. Rodgers has thrown 451 straight passes at home in regular season without interception, and 38 consecutive TD passes at home with-out pick, both NFL records. James Starks 95 yards in Week 2 against Se-attle was third-highest rushing total of backup running backs career. DL Mike Daniels 13 sacks since start of 2013 season are second on Packers in that span to LB Clay Matthews (18). K Mason Crosby became Packers career leading scorer (1,057 points) with four field goals and extra point. WOLF RIVER MEDIA 11FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2015GREEN & GOLD EXPRESS

Quick Facts The Packers have 82 pass plays of 25 or more yards since the beginning of 2013, third in the NFL. Green Bay has outscored opponents by 171 points in the first half over the past two sea-sons. The Patriots are second with a 117-point differential. The Packers played the

Chiefs in the first Super Bowl in January 1967 and won, 35-10. Kansas City has the high-est winning percentage of any team against the Packers (75 percent). The Packers are 15-3 in regular-season night games at Lambeau Field under Mike

McCarthy, including wins in 13 of the past 14. In regular-season games with more than five attempts, Pack-ers QB Aaron Rodgers has recorded a 100-plus quarter-back rating in 13 straight home games. Green Bay rookie Ty Mont-gomery ranks second in the

NFL in kickoff return yardage with an average of 31.3 yards per return. Rodgers last through multiple interceptions in a home game on Oct. 24, 2010 against the Vikings. Green Bay is looking to go 3-0 for the first time since 2011, and for the third time

under McCarthy. The Packers have ap-peared on Monday Night Football for 23 straight seasons, the second longest streak in the NFL, behind the Denver Broncos. Rodgers is 4-1 as a start-ing quarterback at home on Monday Night Football.

Green Bay has the second fewest giveaways in the NFL since 2009 with 107. The Packers win almost 88 percent of games when they do not turn the ball over. Rodgers has thrown touch-downs on 7.5 percent of his passes since 2014, the highest percentage in the league.

Stafford expects to keep starting streak intactThe Associated Press

Matthew Stafford took snaps and threw at practice as if it was just another day at work.

It appears that his starting streak is safe.

The Detroit Lions quarter-back said he felt pretty good Wednesday before going out on the field and looking healthy enough to participate as usual during the parts of practice open to reporters. He was able to fin-ish practice with his injured ribs.

Stafford has already taken a beating this season. He needed X-rays on his chest and ribs after getting roughed up in Sundays loss at Minnesota. In the season-opening loss at San Diego, he hurt his right arm.

Stafford keeps getting up to take another snap.

He has been doing that for four-plus years after there were doubts about his durability early in his career.

I take pride in being able to get out there no matter how Im feeling, Stafford said.

Stafford has a 68-game start-ing streak, including two playoff games, going into Sunday nights home opener for the Lions (0-2) against Denver (2-0).

Detroit drafted Stafford with the No. 1 pick overall in 2009 af-ter its winless season. He was healthy enough to play in a total of just 13 games during his first

two years because of knee and shoulder injuries.

As a rookie, though, Stafford showed how much grit he has during a game against Cleveland. After he was knocked out of the game for a short time, he came back to throw a fifth touchdown pass with no time on the clock to beat the Browns.

I dont think theres any question about how tough he is, Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. I think that was probably dem-onstrated his first year in the league.

Calvin Johnson said Staffords ability to bounce back from get-ting banged up makes everyone on the team want to work harder. The star receiver sounds as if he expects Stafford to play against the Broncos.

Hes a tough cat, John-son said. Hes going to battle through it.

While Stafford has stayed on the field this season, he is not off to a strong start.

He has completed 61 percent of his passes for 532 yards with

four TDs and three intercep-tions. Those lackluster results lead to a QB rating that ranks 25th in the NFL.

He has gotten sacked only once in each of the first two games, but has been hit and knocked down many more times. When Stafford gets out of the pocket, he plans to do a better job of going down to the ground by sliding or by getting out of bounds to avoid some hits.

I think last week, I got out of the pocket a couple of times and ran and had some opportunities to get down and didnt, Stafford said. Ive just got to find a way to get down and protect myself.

Stafford didnt have wraps of any kind on either arm as he has in previous practices. It wasnt clear if his ribs were being pro-tected by a padded vest.

Stafford, though, joked he wasnt hiding anything under his baggy hoodie when he talked with reporters.

Ive just got a cutoff shirt un-derneath this and nobody wants to see that, he said with a grin.

Seahawks have rushed for at least 100 yards as team in 13 straight games, franchise record. WR Doug Baldwin with 14 receptions through two games, tied for 10th in NFL. Unclear if Chancellor will play. Seahawks started Dion Bailey in Week 1 and DeShawn Shead in Week 2 at strong safe-ty. Fantasy Tip: With ques-tions about Cutlers availability, best to avoid Chicago skill play-ers. WR Alshon Jeffrey is also in question after missing last weeks game with hamstring in-jury. Graham could be solid option after questions all week on getting him more involved.
