BACKGROUND

GREEN Information Technologies initiatives have become vital to the development of corporate computing solutions within the last decade as efforts to reduce costs and environmental emissions continue to gain momentum.

Information Technology (IT) is said to account for 2% of global energy demand. Of the2% global power used to power IT, 39% was attributed to Personal Computers(PCs) and monitors, 23% servers-including cooling, 15% fixed- line telecoms, 9% mobile telecoms,7% land and office telecom, and 6% printers. These costs could be averted if more energy efficient and sustainable initiatives are adopted in the IT industry from the design stage.

In South Africa, research has shown that about 90% of all computers were left on overnight in many of the offices with energy costs aligned to $2, 8 billion wasted on powering idle PCs. Every PC left on overnight can consume as much as 1000 kWh a year, which is equal to three freezers over the same period.

Innovations in the area of energy efficient technologies have seen an uptake of new greener equipment in most IT departments. Although some technologies are yet to be fully realised by the general public, green computing does not only reduce costs, but also carbon-dioxide emissions. With energy rates sky rocketing, the lure for energy–efficient computing initiatives such as PCs and server power management solutions should be incorporated by the technology users.

Cutting edge technologies such as virtualization, cloud computing and software as a service (SaaS) have transformed inefficient computing technologies into landmarks. Green computing is expected to drive the next IT revolution along with mobility and broadband.

Green computing adaptations also adds value to most organisations through integration and recycling of energy to achieve energy efficiency and reduction of production costs.

It is against this background that this summit seeks to rally the computing technology industry to reduce computer energy consumption from the design stage to promote energy–efficient computing technologies and to encourage the technology users to embrace the green computing.

Business Connexion, the leading integrator of innovative business solutions based on information and communications technology (ICT), is an Eskom-approved Energy Services Company (ESCO).
