Sustainability, by nature, is about the future. It is about products and
business practices that balance the interests of people, the planet,
and profitability. As environmental stewardship continues to gain
traction in business and the world at large it is becoming a growing
priority for the world’s leading companies.
Green businessat ultra speed
Customers are challenging manufacturers to find better ways to
preserve natural resources. Responsible companies are looking to
balance what is good for business with what is good for the
environment. Companies are realizing that efficient environmental
management can have a positive impact on the bottom line. As they do,
green business is becoming good business.
Long before the idea of environmental responsibility gained the urgency
it has today, forward-thinking organizations were putting it into
practice. At Océ, sustainability has been a defining principle since the
company’s earliest days. Today, working toward a low-carbon economy
is a cornerstone of the company’s approach to business and a core design
and business principle. Because any truly meaningful effort to reduce
environmental impact must focus on multiple aspects of production,
Océ is expanding its focus on sustainability in four key areas.

Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line and the environmentAdvancing progress in health, safety and environmental stewardship
Our sustainability policy is focused around four areas of our business operations:
1. Minimize incorrect and unnecessary prints
2. Minimize energy consumption per print
3. Maximize reuse of materials and minimize landfill
4. Minimize emissions of ozone, dust, toner and noise

The Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line: the natural choiceWhile other production cutsheet systems have been fixtures in the industry for years, Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra digital perfecting systems offer an efficient, economical and environmentally friendly alternative. The Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line is designed up to minimize its eco-footprint in all aspects of performance—from toner transfer and imaging technology to emissions, paper usage and energy consumption.
Océ Gemini technology: an eco-friendly alternativePowered by Océ Gemini technology, a breakthrough that uses one engine to drive two imaging belts at once, the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line prints two-sided jobs faster and more reliably because each sheet only passes through the engine once.
A highly sensitive Océ photoconductor produces a sharp and accurate latent image that delivers clearly printed impressions. The toner transfer fusing technology presses toner into the paper to print with near-offset quality. And
exclusive Océ Screen Point technology produces gray scales with extremely high LPI settings and a standard resolution of 1,200 x 600 dpi, offering dazzling halftone quality with denser blacks, sharper contrast and the look and feel of offset continuous tone. A short straight paper path and Océ Copy Press and Océ Gemini technologies place less stress on the substrate, lessening the risk of jams or interruptions.
Océ Copy Press and Gemini Instant Duplex technologies deliver environmental benefits, too. Single-pass duplex printing, which makes economic use of paper, toner and energy, can cut paper usage in half. The system uses mono-component toner and an organic photoconductor with no selenium, developer or silicon fuser oil and. Energy-saving low-temperature fusing and 100-percent toner use eliminates waste, so there’s no need for an internal cleaning system or toner waste bottle and no developer to dispose of.
The perfect combination of extremely high speed, throughput and versatility allows print shops to replace multiple smaller devices with one Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra system. As a result, print shops can produce more work in less time—with fewer resources, less cost and a smaller eco-footprint.

While paper is made of renewable raw materials, it still exacts a toll on the environment, especially in terms of the energy and water used in manufacturing. However, as the focus on recycled paper and responsible sourcing of virgin fiber grows, progress is being made on many fronts. That’s why the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line is designed to make efficient, economical use of paper, to print on a variety of recycled media and to minimize errors, waste and unnecessary prints.
Duplex printing iseco-friendly by natureOcé Gemini Instant Duplex technology is the only technology that offers true digital perfecting power at production speed. By nature, duplex printing is more economically and environmentally responsible than simplex because it uses both sides of the page. The resulting paper savings in a typical print run can be as high as 40 percent, making duplex printing a highly eco-friendly way to print.
Océ Paper Logic takes the guesswork out of paper orientationFurther minimizing the risk of waste, Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line features Paper Logic, an innovation that takes the guesswork out of paper orientation. Say a print job calls for preprinted paper with a company logo or address.
You simply load the paper into the tray exactly as you want it to print. Is the logo at the top right of the page? Just load the paper with the logo at the top right. It’s that easy. The same goes for pre-punched materials and media with tabs. The system automatically detects paper size and orientation, saving valuable setup time while eliminating errors and unnecessary reprints.
User-friendly operationkeeps waste to a minimumThanks to the revolutionary Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra user interface, handling even the most complex tasks is simple and intuitive. The graphical operator interface displays all queued jobs at a glance, providing a snapshot of work scheduled for the day. Assignment and loading of the correct media for the different queued jobs is easy and predictable to ensure first-time right output.
And creating accurate proof prints and intermediate check prints during long runs is easy, so operators can make timely corrections when needed. Built-in reliability features like air separation and vacuum feed technologies, multiple sheet detection, and instant duplexing help users keep paper waste to a minimum.
Minimize incorrect and unnecessary prints

Minimize energy consumption per print
The efficient use of energy is a key concern across the document production supply chain, from the energy required to manufacture paper (an estimated 80 percent of total consumption) to the energy required to print documents (an estimated 20 percent). To reduce environmental impact, the energy used to manufacture Océ equipment is comparatively low given the high volumes of output they produce. Every step taken to reduce energy consumption makes a difference. Small energy savings are magnified in production environments that print hundreds of thousands of pages. In print-on-demand environments, where volumes can fluctuate dramatically, total energy usage factors in not just the time when printers are running, but when they are in ready and sleep modes as well.
Remarkably low energy consumptionUnique in its ability to print both sides of the page in a single pass, the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line consumes an estimated 45 percent less energy than conventional dual-pass systems and up to 35 percent less than minimum
ENERGY STAR requirements. Industry-leading energy efficiency doesn’t just result in a smaller carbon footprint—it can save customers hundreds of euros per year in energy costs.
Keeping energy use and costs to a minimumHighly efficient energy consumption delivers another key benefit—lower heat emissions and cooling and air conditioning requirements well below those of competitive products. For customers, this translates to major savings in both initial and ongoing operating costs.
Unlike other systems, the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line does not use solvents in its toner, so there’s no need for the sophisticated air filters or specially ventilated work areas that other systems require. In fact, with the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra systems, print operations can safely reduce and even eliminate investments in this type of equipment.

Maximize reuse of materials and minimize landfill
Certainly, there’s more to sustainability than reuse and recycling. However, both recycling and remanufacturing are essential pillars of a wider program of sustainable business practices. Today, many companies continue to send used machines to landfills because their focus remains on selling equipment today and not the impact on tomorrow.Truly sustainable companies like Océ build products with components that can be reused. They support recycling in manufacturing and routine business practices and have established remanufacturing policies. They recover parts and materials for re-use or recycling to reduce consumption of new materials and the waste associated with manufacturing new products.
Innovation and sustainability go hand in handGenuinely sustainable products like the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line are designed for sustainability from the earliest stages of development. For Océ, sustainability begins with R&D and is designed right into every product. Océ components and materials are built to last. Océ machines are designed to be re-used and recycled after a long, useful life. And Océ was one of the first companies to establish an Asset Recovery Facility in The Netherlands that provides products with a second or third life. Through this program, Océ has reused or recycled up to 95 percent of products at the end of their useful lives, successfully diverting thousands of machines from the waste stream.
Better the second time aroundIn the United States alone, the paper recovery rate grew in 2008 from 56 to 57.4 percent . In Europe, more than half of the paper industry’s raw material comes from recovered paper, a number expected to reach 66 percent by 2010 . Paper made from recycled fiber reduces pressure on endangered forests. It creates markets for paper that would otherwise be land-filled. And it consumes less energy and produces fewer emissions, helping to reverse the flow of carbon in the environment. Given recent advances in green media, the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line accommodates many recycled papers, including Total-Chlorine-Free (TCF) off-white papers that are not bleached using chlorine or chlorine compounds. Océ Imaging Supplies offers a full range of recycled papers and media certified by the FSC/PEFC. What’s more, the group has introduced a Paper Sustainability Program focused on supporting sustainable forestry efforts, using recycled paper and reducing paper use in packaging.
Sustainability is part of the packageThe leading purpose of Océ packaging is to deliver products safely to customers. As over-packaging becomes a growing environmental concern, Océ is committed to keeping packaging and packaging waste to an absolute minimum. The vast majority of Océ packaging materials can be recycled and many are made of recycled content. All inks and glues used in Océ cardboard packages are water-based and water-soluble and all cardboard boxes can be reused and recycled.

Minimize emissions of ozone, dust, toner and noise
The health and environmental impacts of emissions of particles, volatile organic compounds and ozone from printers and copiers have captured the attention of environmentally conscious companies around the world. To enhance the wellbeing of users and operators who work with Océ products on a daily basis, we have taken aggressive steps to minimize emissions through a combination of sustainable product design, careful parts selection and highly effective filters. The result is a suite of products that support a clean, quiet and healthy work environment.
Ozone below the level of human detectionOcé VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line ozone emission levels consistently fall below the threshold of human detection. These low levels of emissions not only exceed regulatory requirements, they’re 90 percent lower than those of major competitors. This is possible for two reasons—the systems use excellent filters and only two coronas compared to the
four to six used in conventional systems. Together, these design features underscore the Océ commitment to smart technology that is sustainable too. Under real test conditions, Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra ozone emissions are as low as eight percent of those specified by manufacturers of competitive systems in official Product Safety data sheets, while ozone levels in work areas are as low as seven percent of those of other systems. This is a significant advantage for companies looking to achieve their environmental goals and reduce their eco-footprint.
