16.14 Salient Observations: 16.14.1 Engine Performance:
i) The backup torque is 5.8 % ii) The maximum brake horse power of the engine at 2400 rpm was
observed as 9.1 kW during maximum power two hours test.
16.14.2 Rotary shaft performance: 16.14.2.1 The maximum rotary shaft power was measured as 7.8 kW. 16.14.2.1 The maximum equivalent rotary shaft torque was measured as 322.8 Nm
against the declared value of 340 Nm.

16.14.3 Drawbar performance test:
16.14.3.1 The power tiller could develop 4.2 kW at draw bar performance test in H1 gear corresponding to 15.0 % wheel slip. In none of the gears stalling tendency of the engine was noticed during the test, which indicates that the dynamic load on the driving wheels is not enough to generate sufficient pull to give maximum drawbar output. This should be looked into.
16.14.4 Mechanical Vibration:
The amplitude of mechanical vibration on some of the controls / measuring points of the power tiller exceeded the limit of 100 micron (Refer: Chapter-9). It should be dampened down to improve operational comfort and life of the components.
16.14.5 Noise measurement:
Max. noise at operator’s ear level was observed as 98 dB (A) and 84 dB(A) against the declared value of 98 dB(A) and 90 dB (A) respectively as specified by ILO. This calls for bringing down the noise level to improve operational comforts.
16.14.6 Haulage test
16.14.6.1 The power tiller could pull a two-wheel trailer of 1.5 tonne gross mass on the tar macadam road in H3 gear.
16.14.7 Puddling test 16.14.7.1 Puddling test was conducted with cage wheels and rotavator. 16.14.7.2 The maneuverability of power tiller during puddling test was found
satisfactory. 16.14.7.3 On partial dismantling of the power tiller and inspection of the oil samples
from engine, crankcase, transmission case and rotary chain case, no entry of mud and/water was observed in the rotary shaft bearing cap.
16.14.8 Rotavator blades:
i) The dimensions of the blades conform, in full, to IS: 6690-1981 (Re-affirmed in 2002).
ii) The hourly rate of wear for dry land and wetland operations were observed to be 0.19 to 0.39 and 0.15 to 0.29 percent respectively.
iii) Chemical composition of hatchet and straight blades as per the requirements of IS: 6690-1981. (Re-affirmed in 2002). (Results are awaited)
16.14.9.1 As per IS: 12239 (Part 3) – 1988, “maximum safe speed” with trailer is required to be specified by the manufacturer. Necessary action may be taken in this regard.
16.14.9.2 As per IS: 12239 (Part 3) – 1988, balancing mass to be added to achieve correct weight balance of the power tiller with various attachments should be recommended by the manufacturer in the operator manual. This may be examined for compliance.
