Cursillo (cur SEE yo) is a voluntary Lay

Movement of the Catholic Church started

in Spain, which presents a method and

strategy for living basic Christian Ideals.

The inherent message of Cursillo is to

share one’s Christianity in the normal

everyday activities of life … with your

family, in your workplace, in your

neighborhood, in your parish community,

and throughout the whole world.

Our Mission is the Church’s mission.

We’re fully Catholic, and obedient to the

Magisterium. Cursillo was endorsed by

Pope Paul VI (1966), Pope John Paul II

(1980) mentioned Cursillo as one of the

tools of the New Evangelization, and

Pope Francis (2011) wrote an inspiring

letter encouraging cursillistas in their

work in Argentina.

Cursillo in the Archdiocese of Detroit is a

voluntary lay administered organization

founded in 1962, and focused on

evangelization. Cursillo collects no dues

or fees of its member participants.

Jesus said…"Abide in Me, and I in you…for apart from Me you can do

nothing.“

I leave you now with this prayer: that the Lord Jesus will reveal Himself to each one of you, that He will give

you the strength to go out and profess that you are Christian, that He

will show you that He alone can fill your hearts. Accept His freedom and

embrace His truth, and be messengers of the certainty that you

have been truly liberated through the death and resurrection of the Lord

Jesus. This will be the new experience, the powerful experience, that will

generate, through you, a more just society and a better world.

God bless you and may the joy of Jesus be always with you!

-Saint, Pope John Paul II

My Dear Friends,

It has been a great privilege and joy to

be the Lay Director for the past 6

years. I have met so many wonderful

and faith filled people who are willing

to share their love of Jesus.

I have been involved in Cursillo for

over 40 years (egads!) and have seen

so many people who have been

transformed and brought to a deeper

understanding of how much God loves

them. What a joy!

Knowing how much good Cursillo

does, I encourage all to become more

involved and committed to sharing the

word of God through Cursillo.

For those of you who were at the

closing of the Women’s Weekend

#390 (rectored by Peggy Martin) on

Sunday October. 18, you witnessed

the commissioning of the our new Lay

Directors ---

Ann Sliney and Tony D"Amico.

They will be great, so please give

them your prayers and support.

God Bless, DeColores and Ultreya,

Lynne Pfannes

On July 24, 1701, Cadillac and hispeople landed at Detroit. Twodays later, July 26, 1701, Ste.Anne's Feast Day, construction ofthe first structure began, Ste.Anne's Catholic Church. The sitewas just west of what is nowJefferson and Griswold streets.

Fire swept through the settlementon October 5, 1703 destroying thechurch, rectory, and several otherbuildings. The parish's earliestrecords were consumed in thatfire. Even so, Ste. Anne's today, possesses one of the longestcontinuous church records in theUnited States.

In 1714, the church was razed bythe people of Fort Ponchartrainthemselves, to avoid having it beused as cover by the Fox NativeAmericans, with whom the Fort'ssoldiers were fighting. For severalyears Mass was said in a make-shift church in a fort building.

In 1755, the 6th Ste. Anne deDetroit was built when FatherSimple Bocquet began his 27years of service. During his time, the English invaded, but allowedreligious freedom. English, Irish, and Scottish settlers arrived. FirstCommunion classes wereinstituted.

Father Gabriel Richard served Ste. Anne's as itspastor from 1802 to 1832. He founded churches, schools, co-founded the University of Michigan, was a politician, and a member of Congress. Hewas also a printer. He published Michigan's firstnewspaper, The Observer. He imported cardingand spinning wheels, and looms so women couldlearn a trade. He loved to talk politics - was well-read and deeply devout. He died in his 65th year, the last victim of a plague, during which he hadspent himself tending the sick.

The 8th and present church is now at 1000 Ste.Anne Street (formerly 19th Street) at Howard, near the Ambassador Bridge. It's cornerstone waslaid in 1886. The church contains many relicsfrom the 1818 stone church which stood on BatesStreet. Among its treasures are: the 1818cornerstone, the main altar, the intricately handcarved communion rail, the "Beaubien Bell" andthe statue of Ste. Anne and her daughter, Mary. Italso contains the oldest stained glass in the city. The church has a 26-rank pipe organ and areverberation time typical of some of the finestEuropean churches. Of particular interest on theexterior of the building are the flying buttresses, afeature fairly common in gothic churches inEurope, but unusual in the "new world." Fourgargoyles guard the main entrance on the northfacade.

Kateri was born in 1656 in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon(modern day Auriesville) in upstate New York. When she wasonly 4 years old her parents and brother died of smallpox.Kateri survived the disease, but it left her face badly scarredand her eyesight impaired. Because of her poor vision, Kateriwas named "Tekakwitha", which means "she who bumps intothings". Kateri was taken in by her uncle who was bitterlyopposed to Christianity. When she was 8 years old, Kateri'sfoster family, in accordance with Iroquois custom, paired herwith a young boy who they expected she would marry. However, Kateri wanted to dedicate her life to God byremaining single and offering her life to Jesus.

When Kateri was 18 years of age, she began instructions in theCatholic Faith in secret. Her uncle finally relented and gave hisconsent for Kateri to become a Christian, provided that she didnot try to leave the Indian village. For joining the CatholicChurch, Kateri was ridiculed and scorned by villagers, and herlife was threatened. She escaped to the Mission of St. FrancisXavier, a settlement of Christian Natives in Canada. Here shewas known for her gentleness, kindness, and good humor. OnChristmas Day 1677 Kateri made her first holy communion anda vow of perpetual virginity.

During her time in Canada, Kateri taught prayers to childrenand worked with the elderly and sick. She would often go toMass both at dawn and sunset. She was known for her greatdevotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to the Cross of Jesus.

Kateri endured great suffering from a serious illness and diedon April 17th, 1680, shortly before her 24th birthday. Traditionholds that Kateri's final words were. . ."Jesus, I love you“.

Witnesses reported that within a few minutes of her death, thepock marks from smallpox completely vanished and her faceshone with radiant loveliness.

Before her death, Kateri promised her friends that she wouldcontinue to love and pray for them in heaven. Fifty years afterKateri's death the first convent for Indian nuns was establishedin Mexico and they pray daily for Sainthood for Blessed Kateri.Their prayers were answered on October 21, 2012 when Kateriwas canonized as the first Native American woman to behonored with sainthood.

An Irish man shows up in a pub one day and

orders three pints of Guinness. He takes sips

from each glass until they are empty and calls the

bartender for three more. The bartender says,

'Sure it's up to yourself, but wouldn't you rather I

was bringing them one at a time? Then they'll be

fresh and cold.'

'Nah...' your man says, ' I'm preferrin' that ye

bring 'em three at a time. You see, me and me

two brothers would meet at a pub and drink and

have good times. Now one is in Australia, the

other in Canada and I'm here. We agreed before

we split up that we'd drink to each other's honor

this way.'

'Well,' says the bartender, 'that's a grand thing to

do, all right. I'll bring the pints as you ask.'

Well, time goes on and your man's peculiar habit

is known and accepted by all the pub regulars.

One day though, he comes in and orders only

two pints. A hush falls over the pub. Naturally,

everyone figures something happened to one of

the brothers. A group of the regulars corner the

bartender and finally persuade him to find out

what happened. With a heavy heart, the

bartender brings the two pints and says, 'Here's

your pints... and let me offer my sincerest

condolences. What happened?'

The Irish man looks extremely puzzled for a

moment, and then starts laughing.

'Oh, no, no, no! 'Tis nothing like that. You see,

I've given up drinking for Lent...'

“Religious liberty might be supposed to mean that

everybody is free to discuss religion. In practice it

means that hardly anybody is allowed to mention it.”

Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Yourkindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxietyat all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God thatsurpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds inChrist Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whateveris just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, ifthere is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned

and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peacewill be with you.
