Greater Detroit's Original Cultural Events Weekly, Thursday, March 22, 2018 DOWNTOWN MONITOR Just in time for sports fans in southeastern Michigan and points elsewhere - the Detroit Tigers are back in town. Opening Day is a civic holiday at Comerica Park, Thursday, March 29, as the Pittsburgh Pirates provide the opposition at 1:10 p.m. in front of an assured sell-out crowd. When last we left our Tigers, they finished in last place last October. It was a heart-wrenching end to a wonderful era in Tigers history. The club stars like Justin Verlander, Justin Upton, J.D. Martinez and Ian Kinsler were shuffled off to playoff contenders as GM Al Avila shed payroll and gained coveted prospects. Now, the rebuild is in full swing as Dixon Machado replaces Kinsler at second base, Leonys Martin or Victor Reyes replace J.D. Martinez in the outfield, Jeimer Candelario is the new third-sacker and newcomer Mike Fiers is among the starting pitchers. This Tigers team will be hard to identify without a game program! The 2018 season will be guided by new manager Ron Gardenhire who was fairly successful as skipper of the Minnesota Twins. He replaces Brad Ausmus who was shown the exit door after last season's disaster. As reports from spring training in Lakeland are rosy for Gardenhire as he takes a direct role in coaching the young talent. Veteran leadership on the Tigers comes with first baseman all- star Miguel Cabrera, designated hitter Victor Martinez, right fielder Nicholas Castellanos, pitchers Jordan Zimmermann, Michael Fulmer and Shane Greene. At press-time, Gardenhire was still deciding on a final outfield position, one or two utility infielders, a possible third catcher (behind James McCann and John Hicks) and a couple of bullpen positions. The season will be fun as a September weekend will honor the 50th anniversary of the Detroit Tigers 1968 World Championship and the August (separate) days honoring new Hall of Famers Alan Trammell and Jack Morris, leaders of the 1984 World Championship. Giveaway items include magnet and wall schedules, April in the D skyline beanie, Negro Leagues replica cap, tote bags, bobbleheads, '68 replica jerseys and pennants and Hall of Fame replica plaques honoring Tram and Morris. Special theme games include Negro Leagues Weekend, Polish- American Night, University Nights, Class Outside Series, Star Wars Night, Bark at the Park (twice), Kids Opening Day, Bike Night, Grandparents Day, Boy Scouts Day and Girl Scouts Day. Fireworks Nights return also. Tickets are more plentiful than in recent years as fans take a "wait and see" look at the 2018 edition of the Tigers, Visit tigers. com or call (313) 471-2255. TV is set with Mario Impemba, Rod Allen and Kirk Gibson calling FOX Sports Detroit action while Dan Dickerson and Jim Price call the action on 97.1 FM The Ticket. George's Fearless Predictions: AL Central-Cleveland, AL East-NY Yankees, AL West-Houston, NL Central-Chicago, NL East-Washington, NL West-LA Dodgers. World Series: Indians over Dodgers. This coming weekend the Rackham choir is going to be performing Voices of Light at the auditorium of the DIA. Dress rehearsal is on Friday at noon (special group rates available) and performance is on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The choir sings simultaneously with the showing of the film as well as the performance of De-troit Chamber Winds and Strings. Carl Theodor Dreyer's film

- a haunting and powerful depiction of the trial of Joan of Arc (pictured) - enhanced with a live performance of Richard Einhorn's superb score for orchestra, chorus and soloists is at once deep-ly moving and unforget-table. The visual intensity of the performances - actress Renée Falconetti's role as Joan is by itself extraordi-nary - is brilliantly support-ed by Einhorn's skillful use of vocal parts inspired by medieval song and instru-

mental writing based on layered minimalist note pat-terns. Performances draw a wide audience ranging from film buffs and choral en-thusiasts, to contemporary music lovers and those who continue to find the story of Joan of Arc inspirational even 600 years after her birth. This performance is pre-

sented in partnership with the Friends of the Detroit Film Theatre, the Detroit In-stitute of Arts, and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings. On Saturday night, March

24, 7:30 p.m., the Dance The-atre of Harlem will be pro-viding a magical evening of dance with a following re-ception at the Detroit Opera House. The ballet company will be featuring such works as Brahms Variations, Le Cor-saire Pas de Deux, Change, Harlem on My Mind, among others. For more informa-tion, check michiganopera.org or call (313) 237-7464. Conductor Jukka-Pekka

Saraste will be at the Max performing Beethoven’s 7th Symphony with the DSO on Friday March 23, 10:45 a.m. and 8 p.m., and Saturday March 24 at 8 p.m. Augustin Hadelich, violin,

will be soloist in Britten’s rarely heard Violin Concerto. Check DSO.org.Sunday afternoon should

be set apart to enable hear-ing the Chamber Soloists of Detroit at the season fi-nale, celebrating artists of international repute who are proud to call Michi-gan home! Making their CSD debuts will be two of DSO’s celebrated new art-ists, principal violist Eric Nowlin and principal cellist Wei Yu. They join Ann Arbor Symphony Concertmaster and University of Michigan Professor of Violin, Aaron Berofsky and CSD artistic director, pianist Pauline Martin, in a superb program – Mozart’s ebullient Piano Quartet in G Minor, paired with one of the great monu-

ments of the chamber music literature, the deeply mov-ing Piano Quartet in A Major by Brahms. The program starts at 2 p.m. Enjoy a com-plimentary light brunch, mimosas and coffee at 1:00 p.m. Seating at 1:30 p.m. To purchase tickets, call

(586) 944-5353. Single tick-ets: adults $30, seniors $27, students $10. UMS is featuring a show

Bubble Schmeisis this com-ing Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday March 23 at 7 and 9 p.m., Saturday March 24

at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sun-day March 25 at 2 and 6 p.m. Recommended for those twelve-years old and above, it is taking place at the Schvitz (8295 Oakland Street in Detroit). For fur-ther information, call (734) 764-2538 or check UMS.org. The origin of the term Bub-ble Schmeisis comes from the Yiddish Bubbemeisis, meaning stories of grand-mother, something akin to “old wives tales”, which are based on tradition but are not necessarily true to fact.

Foot Health Today

DR. JAMES SCHELBERG

OBESITY AND FOOT PROBLEMS QUESTION: I have been overweight all my adult life and this doesn’t seem likely to change in the near future. The extra weight is killing my feet. Is there anything I can do about it?

ANSWER: The feet may be weakened by carrying too much weight over a long period. It’s also possible that excessive walking, running or standing result in weakened feet. The important thing is to make sure that the foot is properly supported. When ligaments that hold the bones in their natural position become strained, the foot

PODIATRIST

and ankle can become fatigued or swollen. Supportive devices inserted in shoes may bolster feet and help relieve symptoms of weakness. Regular foot exercises may help strengthen muscles and improve foot function.

The theme for this year’s annual Women’s Informal Network (WIN) Luncheon for women’s history month is: Nevertheless, She Persisted: Women who fight all forms of discrimination. Women celebrating women

can be powerful. And, there is a pretty powerful list of women designated as, “The Most Influential African American Women in Metro-politan Detroit” for the WIN annual Luncheon to be held on Saturday, March 31. The keynote speaker will be

Faye Alexander Nelson (pic-tured), who offers a great opportunity for attendees to hear first-hand from one of Detroit’s most success-ful women. Throughout her career Nelson crossed both gender and racial lines to become the first woman of color to hold several key po-sitions in corporate America. The most memorable for me was her leadership of the Detroit Riverfront Conser-vancy, and the development

of the Detroit Riverfront. The conservancy is "one of

the most successful public private partnerships that in-cluded foundations, corpora-tions, the public sector and the community at large in support of the revitalization and sustainability of the riv-erfront," Nelson said. More than 3.5 miles of waterfront, including pavilions and pla-zas, butterfly gardens, parks and green space, a custom-made carousel, fountains and the Dequindre Cut, all connected by the RiverWalk, were created during her ten-ure. These efforts attract more than 3 million visitors

annually and generated more than $1 billion of public and private investment. Her Power Lesson: Never let

others define you. "Had I let that happen, I would not be where I am today. " The 2018 honorees are:

Nina Abubakari, Janee Ayers, Kimberly Boyd, Patricia Hol-lowell, Atty. Denise M. Hud-son, Dr. Sabrina Jackson, Mona Ross, Gwen Thomas. Patricia Cole is the founder of WIN. The luncheon will be held

Saturday, March 31 from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Interna-tional Banquet Center, 400 Monroe St., in Detroit.

Directed by Barbara Busby, an original founder of the Rep, with a cast of four veteran Rep actors, Mark Bishop, Harold Hogan, Aaron Kottke and Samer Ajluni (pictured, L to R).

CINEMA CULTURE

A Review by Paul Arlon

The new version of Tomb Raider is out in theatres now and as of this writing, appears to be the only real, albeit flimsy, competition for the seemingly endless weekly box office success of Marvel’s Black Panther – on its way currently to being one of the top-gross-ing films of all time. And, I concur – there’s not much on the big screen that com-pels me at the moment. We are awash in a sea of cin-ematic flubbery.Anyway, the last time we

saw badass female adven-turer Lady Lara Croft, in the first big screen Tomb Raider, she was portrayed by Angelina Jolie. In this update, we are given Ali-cia Vikander (pictured) in the title role, and there is a clear demarcation that separates these two ac-tresses. Not to be harsh, but the most obvious dif-ference between them is that Alicia Vikander is completely believable as a healthy, physically tough young woman able to en-join danger and scrape by in precarious situations. In this Tomb Raider re-

boot, directed by Norwe-gian Roar Uthaug (is that a great first name, or what? Roar, indeed), Vikander plays the role as it should be — a fiercely indepen-dent young woman, will-ing to do anything to make it on her own. We first meet her work-

ing as a low-paid and dar-ing bicycle messenger. But, we soon learn that she needn’t lead so pedes-trian a life when she’s ap-proached by her former nanny, Ana Miller (Kristin Scott Thomas).

Her adventurer father, Lord Richard Croft (Domi-nic West) has been miss-ing for seven years and Lara has steadfastly re-fused to sign off on the certificate to declare him legally dead, still holding out hope that he’ll return. Miller tells Lara that if

she does sign these legal papers, her inheritance of Lord Richard’s vast wealth would be put into motion. Finally, Lara relents and

meets with a lawyer in the boardroom of her father’s corporate headquarters, prepared to sign the pa-pers and to become the sole heiress to her family’s worldwide empire.Just as s she lifts the pen

to sign, she is given a last, puzzling message from her missing father – a se-cret that only she can de-cipher. Of course, that secret

once revealed, will lead Lara on a treacherous journey to the most dan-

gerous of places, to uncov-er her father's true fate, and with the continuing existence of humankind in her hands. Written by Geneva

Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, this script gives plenty of nods to the previous Tomb Raid-er movies, as well as flat-tering Raiders, The Mum-my, and a few other movies of this same ilk. But, that’s okay. Vikander is watch-able in every scene, and check out Walton Gog-gins (he, of Justified’s Boyd Crowder fame) as the cruel villain Mathias Vogel. Dan-iel Wu as a drunken ally of Lara is alright, as well. This is a definite step up

from the insipid Angelina Jolie movies of the same character. Movies that held great promise, but were too cartoonish to be of lasting interest. There will be sequels for

Vikander and crew. I’ll look forward to them.

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) celebrates the great American pastime of baseball in Play Ball Base-ball at the DIA, on view March 30 through September 16. The exhibition features artworks from the DIA’s col-

lection as well as rare baseball cards, memorabilia and collectibles from the Rochester, Michigan-based E. Powell Miller collection. A highlight of the exhibition is a complete collection

of more than 500 very rare baseball cards known as the T206 White Border Set produced in vivid color li-thography and released from 1909-1911 by the Amer-ican Tobacco Company. The Miller T206 collection boasts a Joe Doyle “error

card” as well as the coveted and extremely rare Ho-nus Wagner card (pictured). The exhibition coincides with the Detroit Tigers

1968 World Series championship 50th anniversary. To celebrate this great milestone in the team’s his-tory, the DIA will feature vintage material from the Miller collection, including Tigers baseball cards, pro-grams and other publications as well as Al Kaline’s autographed bat and memorabilia devoted to Kaline’s Corner, the section of the outfield named for him. Two baseball-themed art works from the DIA’s col-

lection will also be on view in the exhibition including the 1993 large-scale painting Hard Ball III by Ameri-

can artist Robert Moskowitz (born 1937) and a new acquisition by contemporary Guatemala-based artist Dario Escobar who will create a special installation of cut Detroit Tiger baseball bats that outline the skyline of the city. For more info call (313) 833-7900 or see dia.org.

General admission is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County residents and DIA members. The DIA is located at 5200 Woodward Ave., in Greater Detroit’s Cultural District.
