This is it! The last of the three Star Wars Skywalker sequels!Oh, Boy! Excited? Yeah,

me neither...According to George Lu-

cas, the mastermind be-hind the many billions of dollars that the Star Wars franchise has engendered, his original vision was to film nine episodes of his culture-changing creation, and that was all.But, since 1977's first en-

try, Star Wars Episode IV, the money train has kept a-rollin', and in 2012, Lu-cas sold control of his stu-dio, Lucasfilm, to Disney, and my guess is that we'll most likely see an Episode X sometime in the future. And, why not? There's

been close to 30 James Bond movies. Almost every Star Wars movie has been, at the very least, watch-able. As a total body of work,

the franchise will still have legs, no matter if more than one of the bunch has been, shall I say uninspired? (I'd rank the middle three, the prequels, on a scale of piffle to resoundingly abysmal, but that's just my opinion).If you've seen the rest,

you have to see this one, too. Why wouldn't you? That's the thing of it, you're hooked like an Albacore if you've seen the other Star Wars films — you must see this one. Some people I know (my-

self included), have been involved with this fran-chise since its beginnings 42 years ago.So, how's this one, with

Daisy Ridley, as Rey (pic-tured, lightsaber poised mean-faced, ready to hum through an enemy Storm-trooper), reprising her role from Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Episode VIII:

The Last Jedi? Well, pretty good. This is a continuation of

Rey's search for her fam-ily history — who is she? — who were her parents? That kind of stuff. Her search for self brought her to the remote hide-out of the now-hermit Luke Sky-walker, who reluctantly trained her to be a Jedi, and to use The Force. Along the way, Rey meets up with new Resistance pals, the ex-Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega), and fearless pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac).At the same time Rey is

learning to use the Force for 'good', her ex-beau Ren (Adam Driver), is becom-ing the new Darth Vader, master of the Dark Side.In this final episode (so

they say, anyway) Rey, again finds herself working with

her Resistance buddies, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, C-3PO, etc., etc., and General Leia (Carrie Fisher, now deceased, but still playing her part through spliced together unused footage. And, by the way, I found this to be downright creepy...). Rey and friend's list of

death-defying tasks? Stop Ren from capturing a major Dark Force power source, keep the galaxy's most evil being, Emperor Palpatine, from assimilat-ing Rey's power to destroy the Resistance, and some other amusements, too. Directed by J.J. Abrams

and written by Chris Ter-rio and Abrams, this mov-ie doesn't make a lick of sense. I couldn't really fol-low it, but it doesn't matter. It's Star Wars. 'Nuff said.

originality. The owner Lynette Hunter Halalay took us on a mini tour that included amazing handmade original items in the store. She even works with faux fur that she turns into gorgeous items that could easily be mis-taken for real fur. “Everything in my shop is handmade. I spin my own yarn and put it on my knitting machine to design your garment. You will never find another like it.” She also does alterations and redesigns old clothing items into new original pieces. Halalay was the 2014 Vendor of the Year at Eastern Market. Offin River’s Boutique is another shop at The Collective that caters to the

40 plus group with designer clothing, hats, handbags, jewelry and acces-sories. Designers Luukaa, and Lee Anderson (wearable art) Faux fur coats. The shop also supports local jewelry designer Rena Hinton and the great silversmith Milton Benet, also famed clothing designer Beulah Cooley and artist Brenda Stroud. The largest pure fishing show in the country returns to the largest fresh-water fishing market in the country when the Ultimate Fishing Show-Detroit drops anchor at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, January 9-12.“With last year’s expansion at Suburban Collection Showplace we’ve now

Five miles of giant, animated Holiday light displays are lining Hines Drive during the 26th Annual Wayne County LightFest, running now through New Year’s Eve, December 31, except for Christmas Day.At sundown, there are 70 holiday themed light displays winding through the park, as well as 100,000

LED brightly colored lights on all the displays and a second venue was added at Elizabeth Park in Trenton.There is the popular Land Before Christmas featuring moving dinosaurs, the Santa Land Flight School,

toy soldiers, leaping frogs and a fisherman, the abominable snowman, a marching band, scenes depicting Santa delivering presents, traditional seasonal decorations and even a golfer scoring a hole-in-one on the Warren Valley Golf Course. New this year is an animated light sequence under the Telegraph Road bridge. Times for the LightFest are Monday-Friday: 7-10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 6-10 p.m. Admis-

sion is $5 per vehicle. For photos with Santa at the end of the lights, there’s an additional fee.The entrance to LightFest is at Merriman Hollow Park, 7651 N. Merriman Road, which is on Merriman between Ann Arbor Trail and Warren Avenue in Westland, 2 1/2 miles south of I-96. The LightFest ends in Dearborn Heights at the Warrendale Recreation Area where the Santa Shelter is located. Outside the Santa Shelter is a large mailbox where children can drop their wish list letters for Santa Claus.


THE SPORTING LIFE

What a college football bowl feast for the state of Michigan as five of our university teams compete from now through January 1 in the states of Michigan, New York, Florida, New Mexico and Texas.

The biggie is the University of Michigan Wolverines playing No. 9 Alabama on New Year’s Day in Orlando's Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium.

Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN and WWJ-AM 950. Coach Jim Harbaugh versus coach Nick Saban. Be aware the Crimson Tide are not happy at missing the College Football Playoffs for the first time since its inception in 2014.

U-M is ranked No. 17 and brings a 9-3 record against the 10-2 Tide. After a second consecutive blowout loss to Ohio State, Michigan will need to muster everything it can to stop Saban’s powerful team. Senior QB Shea Patterson better be ready for the Alabama defense while U-M’s defense will likely face long, grinding drives by 'Bama.

MSU settled on New York City and the Pinstripe Bowl facing the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, December 27, 3:20 p.m., ESPN & WJR-AM 760. Yankee Stadium is the site of this 6-6 Spartans and

8-4 Demon Deacons matchup. It’s coach Mark Dantonio’s 12th bowl in 13 seasons.

The Spartans should be grateful they went anywhere this season after surrendering game after game this Big Ten season.

The fact that Michigan State has a traveling fanbase locked them in for the Big Apple. Dantonio and starting senior QB Brian Lewerke should be able to beat a Wake Forest team that has lost three in a row.

Detroit and Ford Field host the Quick Lane Bowl on December 26 as the Eastern Michigan Eagles take a bus trip on I-94 from Ypsilanti to play the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, 8 p.m., on ESPN.

The 6-6 Eagles were more than happy to fill the usual Big Ten slot in the annual game, their third bowl appearance in four seasons. The game marks a homecoming of sorts for Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi, the former Michigan State assistant under Mark Dantonio.

While drawing MSU would have been a sure sellout at Ford Field, this matchup should bring in more fans than the usual 20-25,000 who attend.

The Detroit Lions remain the only NFL team that sponsors and promotes its own college bowl game.

Central Michigan University lost at Ford Field December to Miami (Ohio) in the MAC Championship. But they still were awarded a western U.S. bowl, facing San Diego State (9-3) in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque, December 21, 2 p.m., ESPN.

The 8-5 Chippewas are one of college football’s Cinderella stories, winning just one game a season ago and playing for their conference title game this season.

Coach Jim McElwain has attracted a lot of interest as spots open up for coaching changes nationally. Beating the Aztecs will not be easy for the Chips as SD State has a powerful defense.

T h e We s t e r n M i c h i g a n University Broncos (7-5) travel to Gerald R. Ford Stadium in Dallas to face Western Kentucky (8-4), December 30, 12:30 p.m., ESPN.

WMU is led by LeVante Bellamy, the top MAC player and an offensive sparkplug.

WMU has a terrible 1-8 all-time bowl record so a win would be

most welcome for fans traveling to Texas.

Football fans nationally circled December 28 as a red-letter day as the four-team national playoffs begin.

The top-seeded LSU Tigers (13-0), Southeastern Conference champs, face Big 12 champion Oklahoma Sooners (12-1), in the Peach Bowl, Atlanta, 4 p.m., ESPN.

The other semi-final is the Fiesta Bowl, Glendale, Arizona, 8 p.m., as Big Ten champion Ohio State (13-0) face Atlantic Coast Conference winners Clemson (13-0), also on ESPN.

The winners of these games meet January 13, 8 p.m., at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in New Orleans.
