WHY NOT BURLINGTON?

I grew up in Burlington. I went to school at Burlington Notre Dame and then the University of Iowa. After a

stint working in television in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and downtown Chicago, I decided to come back to embark on a career in radio. My friends in Chicago thought I

was nuts. I told them, “I’ll come back and visit when I’m bored and if I’m bored all the time, I’ll just move back.”

That was 1993. The only other zip code I’ve called home since then is 52655.

By K.C. Fleming Great River Health Systems

Today, I want to talk about Burlington being one of the best small cities in America. Ok, laugh if you want, but read on. Are you one of the people that often says, “There just isn’t anything to do around here?” or does this sound more familiar; “I wish I had more time to take advantage of all the things to do around here!” If you are in the latter group, read on if you like, but you’ll just do a lot of head nodding and smiling. If you are in the previous group, I encourage you to read on, and hopefully a spark of interest and excitement will follow.

I am the Medical Staff Recruiter at Great River Health Systems. In the five and a half years I’ve been in this position, we’ve interviewed well over 100 physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists. While not all of them chose to call Burlington home, a high percentage of them do now work, live and play here. The one common theme of almost everyone we’ve brought in is, “This town is way better than I expected!” Along with that, I often hear “For a town this size, there is so much to do!” and “Burlington feels much bigger than the population shows.” But of course, there is nothing to do in Burlington. Right? Wrong.

I came up with a list of more than 80 things to do in the area, but the newsletter editors cut me off. Let’s just say that being “bored” is a choice and not the fault of the community.

HERE ARE SOME FUN FACTS….

Did you know there is a guy in the area that has one of the largest collections of Crosleys (a historic brand of tiny cars)? Did you know there is a family in the area that has award winning gardens on their property that are open to tour? Did you know there is a person in the area that has a huge collection of Triumph motorcycles? Did you know that the SCC men’s basketball team has won more games than ANY other junior college… in the COUNTRY? Did you know that Burlington has continuously had professional baseball as long as any city in AMERICA? Did you know that water skiing was invented on the Mississippi River? Do you know where Otter Bay or Jon Boat Island are? Did you know Al Capone allegedly used Big Island south of Burlington as a hideout during prohibition? Speaking of prohibition, did you know that by this time next year, Burlington will be home to a couple of microbreweries?

I’m guessing you’re saying, “Ok, ok…enough already…you’ve made your point!” I hope that I have! We have SO many things to do around here I find it comical when people say, “There isn’t anything to do in Burlington.” Could we have more activities for youth? Probably. Could we come up with more programs for our adults and senior citizens? Maybe. So, if you can’t find anything to do there are two examples of areas that need ideas and volunteers to help out.

ON THE COVER

Another great pool of applications was submitted for the first round of judging in the 9th annual Des Moines County Business Plan Competition.

“We continue to see great interest in start-up companies in the community,” said Bill Partain, Chair for the Greater Burlington Partnership Entrepreneur committee. “The judging panel gave significant feedback to all participants about how to adjust their plans. We look forward to seeing the implementation of those comments in the final round.”

The Greater Burlington Partnership offers a $10,000 prize pool which is distributed as reimbursable grants among the winning plan(s). The finalists will be judged on the concept of their plan, the economic impact of their business, their ability to adapt, the feasibility of their plan and their presentation, both oral and written.

The Greater Burlington Partnership’s Entrepreneurship committee is administering this competition. Partain continued, “Throughout the competition and the entire year, we want to continue to encourage and

support entrepreneurs to take that step and start their own business. No matter what step in the process you are in, our group is here to assist you.”

Winners of the competition will be announced at the Small Business Appreciation Breakfast on May 13.

Any questions regarding the competition should be directed to Kristi Ray.

RECOGNIZE AREA SMALL BUSINESSES

SOUTHEAST IOWA HEADS TO NATION’S CAPITOL

OPEN 4 BUSINESSWith Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, Downtown Partners is launching the Open 4 Business competition to give entrepreneurs a chance to try out their business ideas. Each of the state’s 52 Main Street organizations can submit one business concept. It can be either new or expanding, but it must be a for-profit business intending to locate downtown.

Later this month, the Downtown Partners Business Development committee will select applicants to pitch their ideas. The winner will be awarded a rental assistance grant if they open in downtown. In addition, they will go on to one of five regional competitions in June for a chance at $8,000. The five finalists will present their ideas in a statewide contest in August for an additional $20,000.

To apply, visit GreaterBurlington.com or contact Steve Frevert.

Just as important is the time you will have to network with other concerned business people from the neighboring counties.

Starting May 1, and continuing through September 30, the Port of Burlington Welcome Center will be open 7 days a week from 10 am – 4 pm. This change is to better accommodate higher visitor traffic through the summer months. With the arrival of spring, exciting changes are coming to the Farmers Market. Newly renamed and relocated, the Jefferson St. Farmers Market will be on the 300-500 blocks of Jefferson from 5 to 7 pm every Thursday beginning May 5. “The vendors, customers, and downtown merchants responded enthusiastically to the trial market on Jefferson last year,” said Steve Frevert. “The Jefferson St. location will bring new energy to the market, particularly with the adjacent businesses getting involved.”

The market will feature fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, crafts, food trucks and prepared food, along with music and activities. The Jefferson St. Farmers Market is supported by Great Western Bank.

While one of my points of this article is to remind us all how much there is to do in the Burlington area, the other one is that our own people need to embrace our community and be proud. Here is an example of what we have to be proud of: I was at a local restaurant last summer when a group of 30 (yes 30) were coming in while we were leaving. Being curious by nature, I asked them where they were from. They told me Barrington, IL (a well-to-do Chicago suburb) and that they were here for a soccer tournament. They went on to say this was their favorite soccer tournament of the year. I dug deeper. Why? I asked. Not only did they rave about our RecPlex, but they went on and on about PZAZZ! Entertainment Complex and FunCity, the neat shops downtown, and the super restaurants. They continued to heap praise on Burlington by saying the best thing of all, is that it is the hands down favorite destination for both the parents AND the kids.

One of the Dads chimed in with comments on Spirit Hollow and how they’re planning a separate weekend trip back to take advantage of the new stay and play offers they had heard about. I asked if they had ever been to Galena, as many Chicagoans visit often. They said they had, but they like Burlington better. I was impressed with their excitement! I told them a story about some other folks that take the train over from Chicago to see bands at the Washington, dine at our local restaurants and stay in our friendly hotels. That group had mentioned, “it’s a lot cheaper than a lot of other places within a few hours of Chicago, but more importantly, a lot more fun!” Those people did wish we had a riverfront hotel. Maybe someday… right?

Speaking of the RecPlex, don’t forget to take advantage of the THOUSANDS of visitors coming to our area for tournaments in 2016. The RecPlex has events booked EVERY weekend from late March thru October this year. How many of those people are interested in YOUR product? How many of them are AWARE of your product? Just something to think about. Speaking of things to think about, the indoor RecPlex is getting closer to being a reality. There is a LOT of positive momentum with that project.

I know these are just a few examples, but I think we have a lot to be excited about. Both commercial and retail growth has been recognized as Greater Burlington won the Big Muddy Cup this year for number of business projects on the Mississippi. We have also been named to the top 3% in the country in micropolitan areas. That didn’t happen by accident. Naysayers have made it clear that they think the city and powers that be have made it too easy for businesses to locate here by offering tax breaks and other incentives. Trust me folks, other cities competing for those companies offered many, if not all, of the same benefits. These new companies chose Burlington because it is a GOOD place with GOOD people. I don’t know why so many people can’t wrap their heads around that. We’ve got a lot of amazing people doing a lot of great work in our area, and we need to recognize that. I know we need to lower our tax levy and get some roads and bridges fixed. Our city manager and council have things going in the right direction in that regard. It might take a few more years, but we’ll get there. I know there are some other issues that we face as a city, but nothing is insurmountable.

In closing…Wait! I haven’t even started in on the millions of dollars being pumped into the revitalization of downtown! Have you seen the new storefronts and signage? Hats off to all that have done and continue to do so much work downtown. So, are we the next Galena? No. Can we follow in Dubuque’s footsteps? Nope. Why not? Because we are GREATER BURLINGTON and we are blazing our own path to make this river city the best it can be. Why can’t Greater Burlington be a place more people from Chicago and other Midwestern cities start to visit more often and vacation to? Why can’t Greater Burlington be a place where locals love to work, play and live? Why not Greater Burlington?

When I was a kid and we were out of town, my Dad would always introduce himself as “Bob Fleming, from Burlington, Iowa!” I asked him why he did this and his first reply was, “I don’t want to be confused with all the other Bob Flemings that aren’t from Burlington, Iowa.” After a quick chuckle, he then would say, “I’m proud to be from Burlington son, and you should be too!” I think we all should be proud of Burlington, whether you grew up here, or if you just moved here. We have a lot to be proud of, we just need to be reminded sometimes.

The Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau has the 2016 Friday Fest schedule finalized and is excited to announce the sponsors and bands!

Friday Fest is a great way to spend an evening relaxing on the riverfront with friends, entertainment, and food! Many of the favorite artists are returning for the fun, along with a few new bands. Kid activities will not be offered at the Port this year. Instead, take the kids to the Art Center of Burlington for Art Hop, then join us at the Port!

Fleck Sales and Golden Eagle Distributing will assist with providing ice cold beverages, and Hy-Vee Food Store on Angular Street will be on hand with food for purchase at each event.
