Brief for the Post ofAssistant Head of Mathematics
THE ROLE
St Aloysius’ College seeks to appoint an outstanding teacher to assist the Head of Mathematics in supporting the running and development of the Mathematics Department. The successful candidate will play a key part in continuing to develop the department as a centre of excellence in learning and teaching in Mathematics.
The role will involve modelling excellence in Mathematics teaching, building relationships between pupils, parents and colleagues, whilst being committed to ensuring that the needs of our young people are at the heart of everything we do, within the ethos of a Jesuit education.

St Aloysius’ College is a Roman Catholic Jesuit school of 1,200 young people aged between 3 and 18 years. The College has an outstanding reputation in
the West of Scotland. Founded in 1859, the school has a distinguished history in the Jesuit tradition and constantly seeks to renew itself to provide the best possible education for young people ‘in the spirit, from the heart, practically’
(Jerome Nadal SJ).
The Mathematics Department in the Senior School has ten Mathematics teachers and is situated in the iconic Clavius Building. The department has
achieved outstanding academic results in recent years.

• Toencouragewell-beingamongstpupils;topromoteaJesuitethos (‘curapersonalis’) amongst pupils and staff in the Department.
• ToberesponsibleforsupportingtheHeadofMathematicsintheday-to-dayrunningofthe Mathematics department, thereby maximising the achievement of all pupils in their mathematical studies.
• Tocontributetotheon-goingdevelopmentofthecurriculuminMathematicsandto encouragethedepartmentinacontinualprocessofself-review.
• ToassisttheHeadofMathematicsinmonitoringthequalityoflearning,teaching, assessment and reporting in Mathematics.
• Tosupportthedepartmentintheadministrationoftestsandexaminations.
• Toassistinliaisonbetweenpupils,teachers,parentsandpastoralstaff,takingactionto secure improvement and change where appropriate.
• ToassistinthementoringofablepupilsinMathematicscompetitionsandapplicationsto University.
• Toassistintheidentificationofstudentsatriskofunderachievementandensurethat appropriate interventions are in place.
• ToassistintherunningofTeamMeetingswithintheMathematicsDepartment.
• TodeputisefortheHeadofMathematics.
• Toencourageon-goingprofessionaldevelopmentintheMathematicsDepartment.
• ToensurethattheCollegeSafeguardingandChildProtectionPolicyisimplementedwithin the Mathematics Department.
Essential
• AnoutstandingteacherofMathematics: experienced in teaching S1 through to AdvancedHigherlevels(orequivalent).
• AninterestinMathematicsanda willingness to learn and develop professionally.
• Excellentorganisationaland time-keepingskills.
• Acommitmenttothecharacteristicsof Jesuit education.
Desirable
• Experienceofworkingwithgiftedand talented children in Mathematics.
• Experienceofpreparingchildrenfor national Mathematics competitions.
• Experienceofworkingwithmathematical technology:interactivewhiteboards, graphics calculators, ipads and Geogebra.
Personal Qualities
• Interpersonalskillsthatdemonstrate an ability to engage with young people, colleagues and parents.
• Excellentcommunicationskills(oral and written).
