President’s Message Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life

you have imagined. Henry David Thoreau

Now is the time that most of us — or at least many of us — are making our annual New Year’s resolutions. The usual ones focus on losing weight, getting more exercise and more sleep, or starting a healthy diet. But what about our plans for creating art? I find that every year I resolve to spend a day in the studio each week, take some classes and workshops, paint more often, draw every day, and so on. But somehow these resolutions rarely last longer than a week or two into the new year.

I’ve been giving this some thought and have realized that resolutions are not quite enough. However, setting specific goals to support those resolutions can make a big difference. Goals should be realistic and attainable, but they should require some reaching as well. Determining what we would like to accomplish in the coming year, writing it down, sharing our goals with someone in order to be more accountable, and checking our progress on a regular basis will help us stay on track and on target.

Written goals, of course, can be a little scary. Once written down and shared, it will be clear to others — and to ourselves — if we don’t accomplish them. But written goals also give us a better chance of success because they require focus and commitment. (continued on page 2)

President’s Message Continued Finally, what if we really tried but didn’t quite reach

our goals? Then we should ask ourselves “What did we accomplish on the way to those goals?” We will have stretched ourselves and will have learned more and accomplished more than if we had not stated goals to begin with. So I am challenging myself and each of you to determine our goals, put them in writing and than share them with someone else to see where it will take us. I think we will all be surprised at the outcomes.

Meet Your Fellow Artists

Perry Flanagan Membership Chair

Perry Flanagan is a traveler! Born in Perrysburg, OH,

she came to Tellico Village in 2016 after moving 15 times and living in six states and four countries due to her husband’s career with General Motors. She has also visited more than 40 countries on five continents.

“Art has always been a big part of my travels — from the antiquities of Luxor, Egypt to modern art in Berlin, Germany and from the informal wooden folk art of Poland to formal oil paintings in Paris,” she says. “But I’m still trying to answer the question, What is art?”

Perry explores spontaneous color combinations and compositions by pouring fluid acrylics directly on substrates. In addition, she creates acrylic skins and painted papers to layer in collages. Perry and her husband, Dave, live in the Toqua neighborhood and have three grown children, Jim, Sarah and Katie.

Pat Kurowski Treasurer

Pat was born and raised in Collinsville, IN, but lived in Denver, Connecticut and Nashville during her working life. She is a retired CPA and focused primarily on federal and state tax laws for a large insurance brokerage firm.

Oil painting and watercolor are Pat’s current art interests and she has taken courses from Laurie Szilvagyi and Lee Edge. As a beginning artist, she enjoys seeing all of the opportunities the art guild offers for finding the medium that suits her best. “I’ve always been interested in art,” she says, “but I never had time to pursue that interest when I was working. Now that I have the time, I feel fortunate to be in a community where art is valued so highly.”

Pat and her husband, Jim, moved to Tellico Village in 2016 and live in the Toqua neighborhood. They chose the village for its natural beauty, peace and quiet and the wealth of activities it offers. Pat enjoys gardening and Jim is an avid woodworker. They have two grown children, Elizabeth and Nicholas.

January 17 Meeting Hugh Bailey

Sculpting with Clay

Sculptor and potter Hugh Bailey will speak at our January meeting and show us how he creates his three-dimensional figures of animals. With more than 50 years experience working in numerous media, Bailey now focuses primarily on the charming and whimsical sculptures for which he is widely known. Bailey says that he just “works doing what he feels.”

Bailey received a BA in Fine Arts from Berea College in Kentucky and a Master of Fine Arts from Indiana University. He has taught many extension courses for the University of Virginia at Bristol and worked as a graphic designer for the University of Tennessee from 1960 until 2001.

He is a member of the Southern Highlands Handicraft Guild, Foothills Craft Guild, the Knoxville Watercolor Society, the Art Market Gallery and the Appalachian Arts and Crafts Center. Bailey was recently honored with the Founder’s Award for Artsclamation 2018 in recognition of his long time participation and commitment to that event.

February 21 Meeting Mary Saylor

Paper Mache — An Interpretation

Knoxville artist Mary Saylor will give us a lively and upbeat presentation about the paper mache animal sculptures she creates. She will also provide examples of her work in different stages to show the progression of how her unique and colorful pieces are developed.

Taylor was born in eastern Kentucky but raised in Columbus, OH. She moved to Knoxville in 2011. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University with a minor in Sculpture. In addition to being a homemaker, mother and full-time health professional, she has worked creatively in drawing, painting, wood carving, clay sculpting and quilting.

Recently, most of Saylor’s work has been fashioned from paper mâché and mixed media using recycled materials. She has a whimsical bent and a deep love and appreciation for all animals, especially dogs and cats. “I never know how each new sculpture may evolve as I begin,” she says. “They always surprise me as they come to life with their own personalities and stories!”

To see the delightful gallery of Saylor’s unique sculptures, go to thecraftydonkey.com.

Tina Brunetti’s New Show Opens at a Knoxville Gallery Tina Brunetti’s show, Reflections on Nature, opened January 4 at the

Broadway Studio and Gallery in Knoxville and will run through January 26. Brunetti’s love of animals shines through - quite literally - with art that is created from upcycled pieces of aluminum, steel and copper. She uses grinding tools to add texture, torches to produce vibrant colors and chemicals to achieve aged patina. These processes create stunning patterns that refract light through the alcohol inks on the surface of her works. Broadway Studios and Gallery is located at 1127 Broadway in downtown Knoxville. Hours are Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday through Thursday by appointment.Tiger/ Tina Brunetti

Lee Edge Hosts Workshop for Charity Lee Edge hosted a one-day workshop on December 4 that was designed

for recent students just to have fun and also to support a charity. Participants worked with watercolor and liquified acrylics on various surfaces, with Edge providing some of the supplies and students bringing their personal supplies as well. There was no fee for the workshop, but charitable donations were made by the students and Edge was able to send $265 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. What a great way to enjoy the creative process in the spirit of the holiday season!

After an informative presentation on oil painting and a few warm-up exercises, students will work from a black and white still life photo provided by the instructor. The main objective will be establishing good composition with gray values, called a Grisaille under painting. A strong foundation will provide a clear roadmap for achieving a realistic still life. This workshop is key to understanding the medium and preparing students for more advanced workshops.

Realistic Oil Painting - Transparency January 17, 18, 19, 2019, (3 days) 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Instructor: Laurie Szilvagyi Cost: $200 Place: Szilvagyi Studio (Rarity Bay, address below) Registration: Email [email protected] and send payment to Laurie Szilvagyi, 186 Rock Point Drive, Vonore, TN 37885

This workshop is Session III in the series of VI being offered. This progression has been designed for the artist who wants to embrace oil painting in a realistic and systematic manner.

In Session III, we will be painting "Cocktails" so get ready to follow along with the instructor-provided photo or bring your favorite cocktail glass (with embellishments) to set up your own still life composition, such as Cosmopolitan, Appletini, Old Fashioned, Sangria, Manhattan, Margarita.

All workshops begin with an informative oil presentation, a few warm-up exercises and one completed painting. You may either bring a few items for your individual still life or you may work from a still life photograph provided by the instructor.

Experimental Art Workshop Using Watercolor and Acrylics February 7, 8, 9, 2019 (3 days) 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Facilitator: Lee Edge, BSA, MFA Cost: $150 plus $40 for some paints and all surfaces. A deposit of $50 is due immediately. Place: Chota Center, Room A Method: Demonstration and encouraging critiques Prerequisites: Some painting experience and knowledge of design and composition (to be reviewed) Registration: Contact Lee Edge at 865-458-3118 or [email protected].

Participants will work on Terraskin, Yupo, and treated watercolor paper using watercolors and acrylics to create spontaneous, non-objective creations exercising the elements and principles of design. Participants will collect textured items to use in painting and will bring some paints that they already have. Collected textures will be used to enhance the painting surfaces and anything other than paint brushes will be used to spread chosen paints on the alternative surfaces. This promises to be fun and allows the subconscious to become active in the artistic productions.
