AS BROADWAY THEATERS and other
performing arts venues remain closed due
to the pandemic, arts lovers everywhere
are exhaling a collective sigh of despair.
Great Performances is here to lift your
spirits with the sumptuous ballet film
Romeo and Juliet (Fri 11th, 9 p.m.) and a
new season of the globetrotting classical
music series Now Hear This (Fri Sept
18th-Oct 2nd, 9 p.m.).
Now Hear This, which premiered on
Great Performances in 2019, invites
viewers to travel the world with virtuoso
violinist Scott Yoo, Chief Conductor and
Artistic Director of the Mexico City Phil-
harmonic, as he chases the secret
histories of classical music masterpieces
in this miniseries that merges music,
storytelling, travel, and culture.
Each episode focuses on a great com-
poser, tracing the creation and lasting
impact of their masterpieces while
exploring little known or recently
discovered works and new music
they inspired. In Series 2, join
the Maestro as he meets
acclaimed virtuosos, local
musicians, music histori-
ans, and other charismatic
characters on his travels
through North America and
Europe, connecting the classics
to the contemporary—and enjoying the
culture along the way.
Yoo describes the series as “Anthony
Bourdain meets classical music.”
The first episode, Haydn: King of
Strings (Fri 18th, 9 p.m.), follows Yoo and
guest artists as they discover how com-
poser Joseph Haydn borrowed folk music
from Scotland, Hungary, and Austria to
create his famous “Emperor Quartet.”
Celebrate the work of Franz Schubert
with Yoo and promising young musicians in
The Schubert Generation (Fri 25th, 9 p.m.).
In Becoming Mozart (Fri Oct 2nd,
9 p.m.), Yoo and pianist Stewart Goodyear
visit Yoo’s Festival Mozaic in California,
where Goodyear directs an orchestra from
the piano while improvising Mozart solos.
A fourth episode on Beethoven will air
in 2021.
Also this month on Great Perfor-
mances, dance aficionados won’t want
to miss Romeo and Juliet (Fri 11th,
9 p.m.). The Royal Ballet’s William Brace-
well and Francesca Hayward portray
Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in this
“vibrant and sublime” (The Guardian)
film version of choreographer Kenneth
MacMillan’s ballet, set to Prokofiev’s
famous score and filmed on atmospheric
sets and locations in Budapest.
Great Performances: Now Hear This
and Romeo and Juliet will be avail-
able to stream following each
broadcast via the Great Perfor-
mances website (pbs.org/gperf)
and the THIRTEEN Explore
app (thirteen.org/explore).

FIFTY MILES NORTH of New York City, in
the town of Monroe, the village of Kiryas Joel
is home to one of the country’s fastest-
growing Hasidic communities. When a plan
is created to expand the village to keep up
with its population growth, it sparks a turf
war with their secular neighbors. Hear from
people on all sides of the conflict, from reli-
gious zealots to dissidents, from rabbis to
those questioning their own faith.Major funding for Great Performances is provided by The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Arts Fund, Rosalind P.
