Coordinator’s Corner

Fast away the old year passes…yes, the year has certainly flown by! Best wishes for a healthy, happy new year!I hope you’ll find one or more Club activities that will appeal to you in the coming year. You’ll find that the experiences you encounter combined with the fellowship of the members makes for great memories. Make one of your resolutions to give one of our activities a try this year!

Looking Ahead to 2019: Here’s a taste of things to come: Last year’s Mystery Trip was such a success, that another is scheduled to start off the year in April. The Appreciation Brunch will be hosted in a new venue…the newly completed Briggs Woods Conference Center. Then to pay homage to our Iowa entrepreneurs, we’ll hear and see the stories of the Iowans who are making history as we tour Sukup Manufacturing, Winnebago Industries, and the POW Museum in Algona. Great Lakes Shores & More will have us explore the shores of Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron. Back by popular demand, The Ark Encounter & Creation Museum tour. France and the Seine River Cruise beckons us in August. Our ever popular Mississippi Cruise will take us to the Dubuque and Dyersville area in the fall. We’ll end the year with a 1-day Christmas tour to be announced. Looking fine for 2010 & 9! See page 3 for more details.

Day 1: Welcome aboard as we pass around the tip of southern Lake Michigan before arriving at our destination of Holland, MI. There will be an exciting, traditional Dutch meal this evening (D)

Day 2: We travel to Saugatuck, MI to experience one of the Great Lakes most amazing phenomena, while riding on a specially equipped Dune Buggy. We next visit Wind Mill Island and the famous “De Zwaan”, an authentic Dutch windmill, and is the oldest working Dutch windmill in the United States. Next, we visit a reproduction of an 1800’s Dutch Village, and then travel to Thunder Bay Resort. Ride on a horse drawn carriage that takes you into the woods to Elk Antler Log Cabin, which is an elegant cabin that provides every amenity, while culinary artist Spenser James and his staff prepare your gourmet meal. (BD)

Day 3: Travel to the Presque Isle Light Station, which is located on the Lake Huron shoreline. It is now a museum that provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about local history. Lunch is included at the Lighthouse Restaurant. Visit the Great Lakes Lore Museum that specializes in memories, not just artifacts. Head to a Calcite mine before continuing on to 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. Follow “Shipwreck Trail” to one of 27 wooden ships that sank during a fierce storm in 1905. Next, we continue our travels to Mackinac City for a ferry ride to Mackinac Island as we step back in time for a horse drawn carriage to transport us to our accommodations on the island. Enjoy a “Sip ‘N Salil” sunset cruise around the island. (BL)

Day 4: We board a horse drawn carriage for a narrated tour of the island that ends at the Grand Hotel with its fabulous buffet. Visit some of the unique shops on Main Street, and be sure to sample some of the famous fudge. Later we board a ferry to St. Ignace, where we will board our motorcoach to Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Enjoy a dinner and the experience of locking through the Soo Locks. (BLD)

Day 5: We travel to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, WI where we will learn about the perils of maritime transport. See the Whitefish Point Light Tower, in continuous operation for 155 years. The museum features a 15-minute movie, a variety of nautical exhibits and artifacts from sunken ships. This afternoon we travel to the Tahquamenon Falls State Park, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The amber-colored waters of the Tahquamenon River cascade over the falls, sending 40,000 gallons of water down a 50-foot vertical drop every second. We continue our travel to Munsing, MI for our overnight. (BD)

Day 6: Enjoy a unique two hour Pictured Rock Cruise along the shores of Lake Superior, weather permitting. A buffet lunch in included at the Dogpatch Restaurant. This afternoon we continue our travels westward to Da Yoopers Tourist Trap. It was voted “Best Gift Shop” in the Michigan Great Lakes and a small “museum” of artifacts – but the best attractions are outdoors. Big Gus, the World’s largest working chainsaw, sits on a rise pointing towards the highway. Even larger is Big Ernie, the world’s largest working rifle. Da Yoopers Tourist Trap is a combination gift shop and lots of laughs. (BLD)

Day 7: This morning we visit the four-season, 180-acre Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, WI. If you are up to the challenge, a 2/3-mile board walk trail system winds through the cedar and tamarack wetlands. There is a five-story observation tower, wildlife viewing platform, a 100-seat theater, interpretive and historic exhibits and regional visitor information. Now sit back and relax as our deluxe motorcoach ushers us home after enjoying our “Great Lakes Shores and More” Adventure. (B)

Check your driver’s license...is it time

to renew??

Construction Continues in Webster CityProgress continues! The shell of the 2 story addition is up and gives a feel for the new look. Included below is

an exterior view as of December and an interior view of the west entrance by the architect.

Do you plan to fly after Oct. 1, 2020? If so please read the following articleMany of you have probably heard about the REAL ID that will be mandatory starting October 1, 2020 for three specific events:• Boarding an airplane for a domestic flight. If you have a passport, you can use it.• Entering a federal building that requires identification to enter.• Entering a nuclear power plant. If you are renewing your driver’s license before October 1, 2020, or if your license renews after 10/1/2020, you should consider getting the REAL ID. This designation is printed on your driver’s license via a gold star in the upper right hand corner. There are certain documents required to be presented at the driver’s license office in order to get this designation. Contact your county Treasurer’s office for the documents you need to present to comply. Note that if you do not intend to engage in any of the 3 events listed above, you do not need a REAL ID. Or if you do not have a driver’s license, you can apply for a REAL ID card.
