TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, August 16th Matthew 15:21-28

“And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, ‘Have pity of me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon’ . . . Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.’ He said in reply, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’ . . . Then Jesus said to her in reply, ‘O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.’ And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.”

“The Canaanite woman broke through a number of boundaries, but it was Jesus who broke through the first one. He journeyed to Tyre and Sidon, two cities in Phoenicia, part of Syria, where the people worshiped pagan gods. Jesus went outside Israel and found people of great faith outside the chosen ones. We too may find open hearts and willing souls outside our own borders.”

Join Us In Church Or Facebook Live

The Archdiocese has allowed for churches to open for private prayer, daily Mass and Sunday Masses with limitations on the number of people in attendance, social distancing of six feet between each household, the wearing of face masks, and the use of hand sanitizing stations at each entrance.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is reopened for the public celebration of Mass. While the state guideline for indoor gatherings has been recently revised to a limited capacity of 25 people, church services are exempt from that limit but are still restricted to 25% capacity with a maximum of 100 people.

We also continue to bring parishioners together remotely. Join us on Sunday mornings at 10 AM and on Thursday mornings at 8:30 AM for our live streamed Masses via Facebook Live, or join us in person according to the schedule below.

Private Prayer: The Church is open for private prayer from 8 AM to 2 PM Monday through Saturday.

Daily Mass: The Church is open for daily Mass Monday through Saturday at 8:30 AM.

Sunday Mass: The Church is open for weekend Masses on Saturday at 5 PM and on Sunday at 8 AM, 10 AM and 12 Noon.

Church Offices: Church offices are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 2 PM.

Confessions: Available at 4 PM on Saturday before the 5 PM Mass.

We look forward to seeing you again and hope you will join us however you are able. In the meantime, stay safe and stay healthy.

The altar flowers this week are given by

The Durso Family in memory of

Ralph and Laura Durso.

Childhood is a critical time. It is when the foundation is set for lifelong faith and devotion to God.

Religious Education Class Registration

In order to keep our students and catechists safe during the pandemic, the Religious Education program will follow the directives of the Archdiocese of Newark regarding resuming classes. We are offering remote/online learning as we begin the 2020-2021 school year. Students will have access to the e-book from RCL Benziger, our book publisher and also Zoom instruction with a catechist.

Online instruction will continue at least until January or until such time that we can safely invite students and catechists back to the classroom. All families whose children are currently in the program have been sent an email requesting that you let us know whether your child will participate in online/remote instruction for the 2020-2021 school year for grades 1 through 8.

We will not be offering kindergarten religious education this year.

Please notify the Religious Education Office if your child will not be participating this school year or if you have a child that will be entering the program for the first time. Again, we are not offering kindergarten instruction.

The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) was established in New York more than 100 years ago. Presently, religious education programs have the same potential to transform the lives of Catholic people of all ages.

Jesus touches our lives through the sacraments. Our celebrations of the sacraments are signs of Jesus’ presence in our lives and a means for receiving his grace.

Celebration of Sacraments

Due to the pandemic, we are required to set limits on church capacity. Our church capacity permitted at Mass is set at 100 people. Students who were to have received the sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation this past school year have been divided into four groups for each sacrament and families have been mailed a letter with their child’s assigned date and Mass time as well as rehearsal date and time for their respective sacrament.

Important note regarding Confirmation: Due to the limit on church capacity, the number of individuals allowed for each Confirmation candidate is set at six (candidate plus one sponsor, two parents, and two guests).

If your child prepared for the sacrament of First Eucharist this past school year but you have decided that they will not receive the sacrament at this time, please notify the Religious Education Office at [email protected] as soon as possible.

If your child prepared for the sacrament of Confirmation this past school year but you have decided that they will not receive the sacrament at this time, please notify Elliot Guerra at [email protected] as soon as possible.

This is a week to celebrate Mary. On Saturday, August 15 we celebrate the Assumption of Mary into Heaven and on Saturday, August 22 we honor the Queenship of Mary. Both of these feasts are connected. Fr. Ashley explores the beliefs, history, and expressions of artwork surrounding these feasts.

First of all, we begin with a basic belief: Mary is the first Christian. She is the first one of us. She is the first to accept Christ − “Let it be done to me according to your word.” She is the first to carry Christ into this world − the Incarnation. She is the first to make Christ visible – the Nativity. She is the first to live her daily life in the presence of the Lord Jesus. She is the first to remain faithful to Him even

One Week – Two Feast Days: Celebrating Mary

when He seemed to be doomed to failure – the Via Dolorosa. She is the first to hold Him as they prepare his tomb. And she is among the first to celebrate the Resurrection. It is only right and just that when her journey was completed she was the first of all God’s children to be raised up body and soul into heaven – the Assumption. Mary was so free from sin and so prepared to be in union with God that on her falling asleep she was raised body and soul to be in union with God.

Western art usually depicts Mary being assumed into heaven (artwork at left) guided by the angels directing her towards her Son. Some artists would include at the bottom of the painting images of the apostles and disciples either staring at her empty tomb or looking upward as she ascends.

Eastern Church traditions depict the scene differently. They call Mary’s assumption into heaven the Dormition (the Falling Asleep) of Mary (artwork below).

Mary is depicted as sleeping on a bed surrounded by the apostles and disciples who are looking down on her and weeping. Standing at her side is Jesus. He calmly looks straight at us. The viewer hardly notices that Jesus is holding something. In his arms is a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes. Who is the baby? And doesn’t it remind the viewer of the Nativity with Mary holding the infant Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes? The infant is the soul of Mary newly born to eternal life and ready to be carried to Heaven by her Son.

In either view, Mary, the first Christian, has completed her journey and as the first Christian is raised up now to eternal life.

v

In 1969 Pope Paul VI moved the feast day of the Queenship of Mary to August 22 so that it would complete the octave of the Assumption. The connection was clear. Mary assumed into heaven is united to her Son. At the Annunciation the Angel Gabriel assured Mary that her Son would inherit the throne of David since he was of the royal house of David. Jesus indeed is the King of Kings, the Savior of the World, Christ the King.

In the ancient world the King’s Queen was not his wife. Kings in the ancient world had many wives. The Queen who sat next to the King was the Queen Mother. She was the one with special influence over the King, her Son. She was the one a person would go to seeking an intercessory.

So Mary the Mother of Jesus becomes the Queen of Heaven (artwork below left). RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. The early Church created a chant celebrating Mary as Queen. You know this chant as the Salve Regina meaning Hail Queen. A rendition of this chant can be seen at https://youtu.be/1B91RUv2lI8.

2. Centuries later a similar hymn was created called Hail Holy Queen. A video version of this popular hymn can be seen at https://youtu.be/vST--E8suls.

The above information and recommendations have been provided by Fr. Ashley Harrington, O.Carm.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,

Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.

To thee do we cry,

Poor banished children of Eve;

To thee do we send up our sighs,

Mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate,

Thine eyes of mercy toward us;

And after this our exile,

Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving,

O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

that we may be made worthy of the promises

of Christ.

Amen.

In a new summer series, OLMC music director and music professor, Ms. Andrea Covais explores the rich tradition of sacred music. Each week we are featuring a new song that will be sung during that weekend’s Masses at Communion. We hope these short pieces enrich and deepen your spiritual journey during these times. “The power of sacred music increases the honor given to God by the Church in union with Christ, its Head. Sacred music likewise helps to increase the fruits which the faithful, moved by the sacred harmonies, derive from the holy liturgy. These fruits, as daily experience and many ancient and modern literary sources show, manifest themselves in a life and conduct worthy of a Christian.”

—Pope Pius XII
