LECTURE – CAUSES TO GREAT DEPRESSION

• 1. The Stock Market Crash of 1929.• Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed to 191, 122, and finally 381.

• Black Thursday, Oct. 23, 1929 – Stock prices fell slowly. Investors began to sell & stock prices fell.

• Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929 – 16.4 mill. Shares sold.

• Stock Market lost all gains of entire year.

• 2. Bank Failures.•Occurs when a bank is unable to meet its obligations to its depositors•Bank deposits were uninsured and as banks failed people simply lost their savings.• Surviving banks unwilling to create new loans.

Reduction in Purchasing Across the Board.• After the stock market crash, individuals from all classes stopped buying items.• Led to reduction in the number of items made and thus a reduction in workforce.• People lost their jobs and unable to keep up with paying for items bought with installment plans.

• 4. American Economic Policy with Europe.• Businesses gradually began to fail. Govt. passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in 1930 to protect American companies.• Charged high tax for imports leading to less trade between American and foreign countries.

• 5. Drought Conditions.• Massive drought occurred in the Mississippi Valley in 1930; around the same time.• Many could not pay their taxes or other debts and had to sell their farms for no profit to themselves.• The area of the drought nicknamed: “The Dust Bowl.”
