GREAT BARRIER REEF

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world.The reef is located in the Coral Sea in front of the coast of Queensland, northeast Australia, southeast of western New Guinea and south of Papua New Guinea.It is larger than the Great Wall of China. The reef stretches over 2600 kilometers of length, can be distinguished from the space.

The first European explorer who discovered the Great Barrier Reef was the Captain James Cook on his travel of 1768. Cook discovered the reef when he fell there, on June 11th, 1770.The reef is a very popular destination for diving lovers. The reef has vast biodiversity, warm and clear waters and its easy accessibility. Many cities along the coast of Queensland as Cairns and Townsville offer tours in ship to the reef daily.

The reef is protected by the Marine Park of the Great Barrier Reef.The Great Barrier Reef has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1981. The great reef has an area of 34.87 million ha.The Great Barrier Reef has a diversity of life, including many vulnerable or endangered species, some of which may be endemic to the reef systems.
