The most popular of the deciduous ow-ering shrubs, lilacs, are highly valued for their appearance and fragrant owers. The common lilac and its many cultivars come in a variety of colors purple, white, pink, blue and dark red are all favorites here at the Grass Pad.

Vigorous growth hab-it of the lilacs makes it ideal for tall screen plantings, hedges, borders, and in mass plantings for their tre-

mendous display of owers. Few shrubs can rival lilacs for bloom even under dif cult Kansas City conditions. They are useful as accent or specimen plants at the corners or along houses and buildings. Most popular of the li-lacs is the Dwarf Ko-rean lilac which rarely grows larger than 4 feet. This plant makes an attractive hedge with its fragrant, pur-ple-lilac owers.

Hardy in cold cli-mates, a lilac requires full sun to ower well. Lilacs are easily grown and do well in either acid or alkaline soil but responds with improved growth to applications of lime

every three or four years where soils are acid.

Pruning a lilac after it owers in the spring and before the fourth of July. Pruning con-sists of removing old ower clusters and thinning out the oldest branches at ground

level to encourage new growth from the base of the plant. The strongest new shoots should be left to take the place of the older stems that will even-tually be cut out.

Renew an older over-grown lilac by cutting the whole plant down to within six inches off the ground. It’s a drastic means of rejuvenation. But, don’t worry, the plant will survive. The best

way to treat old plants is prune out one third of the older stems each year for three consecutive years. In this way, the plant can maintain a rea-sonable height in the landscape and still ower from the re-maining wood. By the time the last pruning is completed, replace-ment wood should be strong enough to support the plant and promote owering

STIKIT TO THE WEEDSApril showers bring dandelions and henbit. April also brings a smorgas-bord of winter weeds such as car-petweed, spurge, chickweed, oxalis, purslane and thistle. Wherever there was a winter bare spot, now there is a spring weed surprise. No matter how good your lawn looked last fall, it now looks like a salad bar at the local Price Chopper.

In early April, when weeds are small, liquid controls such as Trimec or Speed Zone will work the best. To ensure success, Uncle says always add Stikit spreader sticker to Speed Zone or Trimec mixes. Stikit, enhances spray ef ciency by releasing tension in water molecules allow-ing water droplets to spread out covering more leaf sur-face. The better the surface coverage, the better uptake of the herbicide. Stikit also contains humectants, ex-tending drying time which encourages increased uptake to target weeds. Also, be patient. At cold soil tempera-tures these plants die more slowly, and you may need a second application after seven to ten days.

Once the warm weather becomes the norm, the granular Loveland Weed & Feed gives excellent broadleaf weed control and encourages grass to ll bare spots. Granu-lar weed controls work best on large leaved weeds. Ap-ply Loveland Weed & Feed when the lawn is damp with a morning dew, your dandelions will be curling the next day. Wet leaf, warm night and no rain for 24 hours and Dandy Dandelion will curl up and die.

Now is the time to

stop the ugly summer weeds that plan to am-bush your lawn as soon as summer soil temper-atures heat up. Crab-grass, foxtail, gooseg-rass, barnyard grass and all the other ugly annual summer weed grasses lie dormant in the soil waiting to sprout and ruin your well tended Kansas City lawn.This nasty weed grass in-vasion takes place every year when lawn soil tem-peratures reach above 50°. These alien seeds will sprout sooner in bare spots that are open to the sun, usually in open areas on the west and south. The warm cracks around your driveway, patio and sidewalk will be crabgrass heaven. De-pending on the year, this

ugly grassy weed hatch usually takes place dur-ing mid-April.In lawns with well estab-lished turf, in the shade or on the north side of the house soil temperatures stay cooler. In these ar-eas you may not see ugly weed grasses species until May. In any event it is not nice to procrasti-nate with Mother Nature. Once these ugly summer grasses sprout, they are hard to kill. Soil Compaction makes it dif cult for the grass to grow in the areas where Spot runs along your deck and fence. Com-paction leaves little or no oxygen available to the roots. Reduce compac-tion in those areas by core aerating your lawn every fall. Pass over the lawn at least 2-3 times focusing on the heavy traf c areas.

the chips into the core holes. The entire lawn will bene t as well, es-pecially if you have poor drainage.
