Matt Bastnagel, presenter, will describe the character of this region using literary examples from the 19th century time period that did so much to shape Southern identity. We will begin with Edgar Allan Poe, who takes his place among Southern authors because of his keenly-felt separation from New York and New England society. Next, author William Gilmore Simms will be profiled as a Southern gentleman with the moral contradictions and justifications of the upper-class society. A discussion of Frederick Douglass will touch on the common elements of the slave narrative in 19th century American literature. Depending on time constraints and audience interest, a brief discussion of William Faulkner and the Southern Gothic may also be included.

One person reads his/her article aloud and discussion follows. Then another article is read. Only requirements… curious minds, a desire to discuss current events, an eagerness to talk, listen and respect other points of view.
