Urban:Alphabet September 2010

The BriefThe alphabet was a major step forward in human communication, whereby visual characters are used to represent sounds of the spoken language. Letter forms as we know today, initially consist of geometric structures, based a square, triangle and circle. The shapes are also found in our daily environments.

This project consisted of taking the raw elements that are used to create a typeface, and use this knowledge to create our own. Our source of inspiration should come from our daily surroundings.

The ResultLiving in the city centre, my daily environment would naturally be Car-diff. I wanted to capture the city as I saw it on that day, so I limited my-self to only one afternoon to take the photographs, and the inner central streets of Cardiff. Each photo shows some element of basic geometric shape that builds our alphabet.

The BriefOne of the key elements within graphic design is the way we use type, it can make or break any project we do. Find a quote that inspires you, and then explore ways of presenting this.

The Aims

The ResultThe quote I selected was by Albert Einstein, and subjects direction. My end result was a traffic sign, that says ‘Logic will take your from A to B’, but when passing traffic shines a light on the sign, the reflective metal in the sign the shows the other part of the quote ‘Imagination will take you everywhere.’ The entire quote uses the same font as the Highways Authority currently use on British roadways.

Typographic Wall Project

The BriefType comes in all different shapes and sizes, in many different locations, naively we may think that it is only used has a form of communication. But many artists have used letter forms as a way to express their art. This project will ask you look at a graphic designer who uses type as an art form, as well as a communication tool.

The Aims

The ResultThe graphic designer selected during this process was Zou Dorfsman who is famed for his used of third dimension type faces, and the way he uses them within his work. He had a long established list of clients, one of which was CBS, an American television network, one of his projects was to design artwork for their newly renovated cafe. Here he installed the three dimensional wall with many different type faces with relating works to the cafe. Our instillation reflects this idea. We chose to use different fonts with our names of initials running along the entrance wall to the studio.

Pica Pica: Live Brief

December 2010

The BriefPica Pica, a local tapas bar, are looking into the possibility of bottling up their ‘legendary’ sauce for the retail market. This would give the customers an opportunity to take home their sauce and use it in their won cooking, plus it will act as an extra revenue for the business.

Create a label for the sauce that establish itself as it own product, but at the same time linking to Pica Pica.

The Aims

The ResultI wanted my design to capture a sense of an home made recipe, so chose to present it in a traditional re-usable jar. The colors used were to reflect on the hot sauce, with in hint of the organic qualities of this product. The design was selected as it could be adapted to other sauces or products if the company decided to expand their brand.

Packaging: Project

February 2011The BriefThe typical consumer will only look at a supermarket shelf for roughly three seconds, before deciding to pickup a product or move on. Products that catch our attention, need to be different and relate to our audience. For this task, you must package either time or imagination, two very different entities that are different to each person.

THE IDEA TOOLKIT

I chose to package Imagination, with the idea that some people may have trouble developing a good idea. Bubble Box - the idea toolkit, contains all of the needed products to develop your idea. The packaging is based on blueprints, that are housed in an outer net that is made of cardboard. The packaging also contains a logo (right) that will help the audience identify the product for a distance. This would stand out on a shelf as the colors are contrasting.

The BriefCreative Workshops were set up as a sub-brand as Turnip Starfish, an animation company set up in Cardiff. Its workshops have become so successful that they have decided to create its own identity. The group are a fun and lively bunch and want this reflected in the design.

The Aims

The ResultAs like many sub-brand companies, their logos reflect some element of their parent company. I wanted to continue this with my own designs. The color used, a bright pick, is a contrasting color to the Turnip Starfish logo. Being a welsh company I wanted the identity to be bilingual, so both English and welsh speakers could be included in the marketing campaigns.

April 2011

The BriefDesign @ Atrium, the inhouse magazine at Atrium need a new cover and double page spread that is based on you. You will be featured as an new, up and coming designer, the spread must contain images of your own work, along with text.

The Aims

The ResultThe idea of the spread came from ‘The Secret Garden’ where behind a old, worn down gate, lies a place of beauty. This is reflected in the magazine as an art gallery, where one the reader opens the door they would enter another world. The cover, being the door, is looked with a velcro lock that has to be opened to get in, I felt this added some interactively with the reader and makes them want to investigate the inside.
