1. ‘17’ Zine

“A zine” (an abbreviation of fanzine or magazine) is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier.”

Zines are usually experimental in nature and cover a wide-range of topics. The benefits from being self-published include being in charge of your own content and not having to keep to rules made by the publisher – this often means they are not censored and can contain controversial content.

Produce a zine named ‘17’ that investigates the life of a 17 year old and the issues involved. This could involve the freedom, lack of responsibility, the future, exams, debt, positives, studying, family, lack of voting, illegal drinking, pressures, drugs, sex, hormones, arguing, college, work, etc.

2. STAMMERING POSTERS

Stammering or stuttering is a speech disorder which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions and prolongations of sounds, syllables, words or phrases, and involuntary silent pauses or blocks in which the stutterer is unable to produce sounds. It has affected a wide range of people including Lewis Carroll, Moses, Winston Churchill and Marilyn Munroe. Recently, stammering was the subject in the Oscar winning film ‘The Kings Speech’. Children and adults are often bullied or ridiculed for their stammer – which was highlighted in the book ‘Black Swan Green’ by David Mitchell

The British Stammering Association require a series of TEXT based posters that highlight the problems associated with stammering and to bring wider acceptance of the condition.

3. Photo Manipulation/illustration/Book Design

With the invention of modern photo manipulation software, it is becoming easier to make convincing images that wouldn’t be possible with just a camera. Surreal images are being created that play with proportions, scale, landscapes and people. It is now possible to ride a cloud, pet a tiger or be

face deep in a puddle.

Create a series of book covers for Penguin Books that play with these impossible illustrations.

  4. TV Channel Logo & Posters

An extreme sports channel needs a logo and poster campaign to promote it. The sports that are included on the channel are skateboarding, bmx-ing, motor-cross, surfing, climbing and parkour. Extreme sports has often embraced the rebellious side of society. Although the sports are becoming more accepted by society, Certain cities still oppose the building of skateparks in their neighborhoods, for fear of increased crime and drugs in the area. Your campaign is to embrace this rebellion and show this in your advertising.

Artists: punk artists like Jamie Reid, skateboarding zines and magazines, photographers specializing in bmx/skateboarding, http://philjacksonphoto.tumblr.com/.

project and will form the artist research of the project.

REQUIREMENTS

Between November 28th 2011 and the first week of February 2013 you will be working on one or the above briefs. All projects must cover the 4 assessment objectives incorporating Research, experimentation, idea development,  connecting to the work of other artists/designers,  outcome and analysis notes.

As a starting point you will need to do the following:

- find research on your subject area and analyse them on tumblr (use the internet, books, collected materials). Also research your subject area

- take a variety of photographs relevant to your chosen brief - do this early so they are available to develop ideas from

- explore and analyse the work of two artists/designers appropriate to the project

You will be then working on ideas and experiments which will be discussed later in the project.
