ZImhERS LAU A LEvEL STUdENT After leaving Hong Kong, Zimhers attended boarding school in Manchester, England. During her three years at the boarding school, Zimhers was unhappy with the way the school was being run, particularly when it came to the poor treatment of overseas students. She felt out of place and was made to feel like a burden.

Zimhers decided to come to study her A Levels at Grantham College because of its great reputation for provision of education for overseas students. She has found that unlike her previous school, she feels like she is part of the class in her lessons, and is treated with respect. Zimhers lives in our on-site Sedgwick Halls accommodation, where she has a room to herself for the first time! Zimhers has already made friends in her classes and in her new home, and has already been shopping in London!

Zimhers says “ I would definitely recommend studying at Grantham College, because everyone goes out of their way to make overseas students feel welcome and wanted”.

ENGLISh AS A fOREIGN LANGUAGE (EfL) SUPPORT EFL support is provided for all international students on all full-time programmes. It is designed to assist in two major areas:

1. Progression in your chosen subject area. 2. Achievement of university entrance level in

English Language competence.

This EFL support is normally provided either through formal sessions of between three and six hours a week of English in addition to chosen subjects or through individual/small group support classes. The latter sessions can also deal with subject specific problems. For example, assistance with or checking

of homework and assignments, or helping individual students in the classroom. All international students at Grantham College work towards gaining or improving their IELTS score. A good IELTS score is crucial when applying for university courses in the UK and abroad. Grantham College will pay for one entry to the IELTS examination (currently over £100) for all overseas students on full-time programmes.

LANGUAGE TESTING SySTEm (IELTS) IELTS is the recognised system for assessing levels of written and spoken English. If you are able to take this test or any other internationally recognised test (eg TOEFL or CPE) before arriving in the UK you greatly improve the chances of success on your chosen study programmes. Scores in the IELTS test range from 1.0 to 9.0.
