WHAT ISGRANITE?

Scientists have estimated for Earth'snewest granite to be 750 million yearsyoung. Having been formed andcompressed within Earth's crust for sucha long period, its durability and strengthmakes granite suitable for places withheavy traffic and usage. It's no surprisewhy most people turn to granite whenthey want a building material wouldlast them a lifetime with as little toeven no maintenance required, whilestill giving their interior space a sparkof character. Granite is an indigenous rock thatcomprises of other minerals, such asquartz, mica, and feldspar - of whichquartz and feldspar have been proven tobe stronger than steel. This gives mostgranites a mohs hardness scale rating of6-7.

CONSIDERATIONS

All  natural materials are perfectlyimperfect. There will be variation frompiece to piece, with a wide range ofcharacteristics (i.e cracks, fissures andfilled holes). Materials will scratch, stain, etch, effloresce and patinaovertime. This is perfectly normal and is part ofthe inherent beauty of naturalmaterials; these are not materialdefects.

CARE ANDMAINTENANCE

Granite is strong, heat and bacteriaresistant and can take heavy wear andtear.  It is one of the easiest naturalbuilding material to maintain, although some ongoing housekeepingis still required to keep it beautiful. SEALGranite is generally stain resistant butit is still not stain-proof. The sealantwill give your granite countertopsextra protection against spills bymaking a moisture-resistant surfaceeven more moisture resistant. Whenwater no longer beads, it's time toreseal. PROTECTUse coasters and cutting boards. Wipeup spills immediately. Avoid directcontact of hot pots and pans on yourgranite countertops. Place doormats at entrances to catchdebris from feet soles that mightscratch the floor surface finish.

CLEANGood old soap and water along with amop will do the trick for granite floors.Nevertheless, long term use of dishsoap will eventually cause build up anddull your granite's sheen, so anoccasional wipe down with a 50/50 mixof water and isopropyl alcohol willhelp to cut down on the buildup. Also, abrasive pads and other roughcleaning tools will cause tiny scratchesin your stone, alleviating it of itsluster. Be careful when using a vacuumfor your flooring - sometimes it couldscratch the stone surface. A dry mopfor your floors, or a simple washclothor a soft microfiber cloth for yourcountertop, will keep your graniteclean and safe from scratches.
