Water conservation and xeriscape applications encourage mulching to help retain moisture in the soil and reduce water evaporation. Glass and porcelain mulch work to keep weeds at bay, soil temperatures moderate and prevent soil from becoming compacted. Unlike wood, glass mulch does not absorb water so water goes where it is needed—to plant roots.
