History: The first burial was Henry Collins on 8.3.1896. In about 1964, most of the cemetery trustees had retired and there were moves to have the cemetery taken over by Moreton Shire Council. However when Council said it would close the cemetery if it took over, local people were concerned and a new group of trustees was formed. This group has continued to care for the cemetery and holds fund-raising events to pay for maintenance. The land is owned by the Lands Dept and the trustees are responsible to this Department. Description: Cemetery containing headstones and grave markers. In the centre of the plot is a timber shelter shed with semi-circular arched openings and a simple hipped roof , clad in weatherboard. Significance: This property is a place of cultural heritage significance and satisfies one or more of the criteria in Division 13.6 of Local Law 30 of the Ipswich Town Planning Scheme as evidenced by, but not exclusive to, the following statement of significance, based on Criteria a, c, d and g. The cemetery is a typical example of a country town cemetery, significant for its association with development of the district of Grandchester and as a record of family names. The shelter shed is an interesting example in terms of materials and form. History: Grandchester was a major watering point for trains, where steam engines could be refilled before the long haul through Victoria Tunnel and the Little Liverpool Range. To ensure a water supply, a dam was built in 1892; a pipeline carried water to the station. In 1913, the dam was enlarged. A report in the newspaper just prior to work beginning stated that the dam (referred to as the railway reservoir) was currently dry. The concrete walls were to be built 2ft higher and soil was to be excavated from the gully, creating double the capacity. Description: The dam is about km north-west of Grandchester Station. The dam wall is a substantial concrete weir with a concrete spillway. Significance: This property is a place of cultural heritage significance and satisfies one or more of the criteria in Division 13.6 of Local Law 30 of the Ipswich Town Planning Scheme as evidenced by, but not exclusive to, the following statement of significance, based on Criteria a, b, d. The dam is a rare example of a very substantial dam and weir specifically built to supply a railway station; it demonstrates the pattern of growth of railway traffic through Grandchester and helps to demonstrate the workings and characteristics of a busy steam-era railway station. It is said to be the oldest railway dam in Australia. Associated items: Grandchester Railway Station, station masters residence, crossing keepers cottage References: Ipswich City Council information Qld Times 1 May 1913 - Railway Improvements at Grandchester Comments: Note: This report has been prepared on the basis of evidence examined by the study team and seeks to identify the most important heritage values of the item. History: The hall is supervised by a local committee. Its date of construction is not certain, but committee members agree it is at least 60 years old. Description: A simple gable-ended lowset weatherboard hall with a skillion roof over what was probably an open verandah at some earlier time. The former verandah has top-hinged timber shutters on the eastern end and a ticket hatch at the front to the right of the double front door which is approached by a short flight of steps. A tank and tankstand are on the left-hand side and a second entry is on the right hand side. Bother sets of steps have pipe handrails. Inside, the original kitchen remains and there is an interesting slatted valance between the main hall and the enclosed verandah. Significance: This property is a place of cultural heritage significance and satisfies one or more of the criteria in Division 13.6 of Local Law 30 of the Ipswich Town Planning Scheme as evidenced by, but not exclusive to, the following statement of significance, based on Criteria a, d, g. The hall demonstrates the characteristics of a typical community hall in a country area and has several surviving features which indicate its method of use such as the ticket hatch, shutters and the separation of main hall and sitting/supper area.
