What is a pronoun?
• A pronoun is a substitute for a noun.
• Substitute means to take the place of or be used instead of.
What is a subject pronoun?
• A subject pronoun is a substitute for any noun which is the subject of a sentence.
• Remember, the subject usually comes at the beginning of a sentence.
• The subject also usually comes before the verb.
• In the sentence Apples are delicious, the subject is the word apples.
For example• The pronoun I is a first person singular pronoun.• The pronoun I is a substitute for the person
speaking.• My name is Donna. • If I want to tell someone how I feel about apples,
I could say, “I like apples.”• In the previous sentence, I is a pronoun which
substitutes for the noun or name Donna.
For example
• The pronoun you is a second person singular or plural pronoun.
• The pronoun you is a substitute for the person or persons being spoken to.
• If I want to tell you that I think you are nice, I could say, “You are nice.”
• If I want to tell you that I think you and your family are nice, I could also say, “You are nice.”
For example
• John is late for work.
• The name John is a noun and the subject of the sentence.
• The pronoun he can substitute for John.
• He is late for work.
For example
• Maria is a good student.
• The name Maria is a noun and the subject of the sentence.
• The pronoun she can substitute for Mary.
• She is a good student.
For example
• The dog is hiding under the table.
• Dog is a noun and the subject of the sentence.
• The pronoun it can substitute for dog.
• It is hiding under the table.• Note: The pronoun it can be used to substitute
for ideas, things and animals but never used to substitute for a person.
For example
• Joe and I attend school together.
• Joe and I are nouns and the subjects of the sentence.
• The pronoun we can substitute for Joe and I.
• We attend school together.
For example
• April and May are spring months.
• April and May are nouns and the subjects of the sentence.
• The pronoun they can substitute for April and May.
• They are spring months.
