Yamazaki Whisky Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1. Whisky is a type of alcoholic beverage made from grains like barley, corn and wheat. Whisky is produced in many countries and there are many different types of whisky made. Probably the most well-known variety is the ‘Scotch Whisky’ and many people think of Scotland as being the home of whisky production.

2. It takes many years to produce good whisky and although Japanese distilleries started whisky

production back in the 1920s, it hasn’t been until quite recently that Japanese whisky has been recognized as one of the best whiskies in the world.

3. A successful Japanese businessman, Shinjiro Torii, was an importer of European wines. He was

interested in expanding his business into whisky, so he sent Masataka Taketsuru to Scotland to learn about whisky production so he could help his company. Masataka spent several years in Scotland, learning about whisky and he came back to Japan with expertise in whisky production, and also a Scottish wife.

4. In 1923, Shinjiro established a distillery in Yamazaki, located between Kyoto and Osaka, even

though Masataka thought that it wasn’t the best location. The distillery took many years to produce its first commercial product; the whisky they named ‘White Label’. Unfortunately, it was not very successful. It took many years and lots of work, but eventually, the Yamazaki distillery began to make whisky that was very popular with its domestic market. Eventually, Masataka left the company to start his own whisky distillery in Hokkaido.

4. Despite the departure of one of the founding members of the company, the Yamazaki distillery

continue to grow and Shinjiro started a brand called ‘Suntory’. The company became so big that it was able to expand and take over rival companies overseas. This made it much easier for the company to expand its distribution channels all over the world.

5. After winning many prestigious awards, Yamazaki whisky is now recognized as one of the best

whiskies in the world. It has become so popular that many of its whiskies sell for thousands of dollars. It took many years, hard work and a lot of risks were taken, but the endeavors of Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru have made Japan one of the leading whisky-producing nations in the world.

The 2019 Rugby World Cup Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1. The Rugby World Cup is the third-largest sporting event in the world, after the summer Olympic Games and the Football World Cup. It is held every four years, just like the Olympics and Football World Cup. The event is run for about two months, with the top twenty rugby-playing countries in the world participating. Most of these nations are outside of Asia.

2. In 2009, the International Rugby Board selected Japan to be the host of the 2019 Rugby World

Cup, over two other candidates, Italy and South Africa. This was to be the first time that the Rugby World Cup would be hosted in Asia. This was seen by some as a strategic move for the sport to secure a much stronger presence in the region.

3. The most popular sports in Japan are baseball and football (soccer). When thinking of sports

played by Japanese people, rugby is not the first thing that comes to mind. This may be set to change though because of recent success on the world stage. Japan shocked highly ranked South Africa at the 2015 World Cup, and they were undefeated at the group stage of the 2019 World Cup, beating, Russia, Ireland, Samoa and Scotland.

4. These recent victories have resulted in a huge surge in media attention and popularity of the sport

in Japan, and sales of things related to rugby have sky-rocketed. The jerseys of the Japanese national team have sold out, and several books related to rugby have reportedly been sold out at bookstores in Japan.

5. It remains to be seen if this current interest in rugby results in long-lasting popularity in Japan.

While more and more people are taking up rugby, most of the Japanese public have only just recently become aware of the sport because their country has hosted the World Cup. Japan won’t be the host of the World Cup after 2019, so it’s up to the rugby-playing and sport-viewing populace to keep rugby in the spotlight and in the minds of the Japanese people.
