Academic Costume

The history of academic dress goes back several centuries, to the chill universities where cap and gown and hood were needed for covering and warmth.Subsequendy this has become a ceremonial costume, with certain standardized.features. For example, sleeves in the bachelor's gown are pointed, in the master'sgown are oblong, in the doctor's gown are bell-shaped. Only the doctor's gownhas velvet facing. The hood is lined with the official colors of the degreeconferring institution; for the University of Oregon these are lemon yellow andgreen. The outside trimming of the hood and the color of the tassel signify thesubject in which the degree is conferred, as follows:

MaizeWhiteDrab

At the University of Oregon it is customary for master candidates to weartheir hoods in the academic procession. Doctoral candidates carry their hoodsand are hooded during the ceremony. Traditionally bachelor candidates changetassles on their caps from the front right to the front left as the degree isconferred. Caps are removed during prayer, the playing of the NationalAnthem and the Alma Mater, and during the commencement address if desired.
