Du Remembers Her High School Days Through Popular MusicGood evening everyone.

Thank you all for sharing this exciting but bittersweet night with us soon to be graduates. First, I would like to thank the families, faculty, and administra-tion for all your support in mak-ing this night possible.

You raised us, taught us, and guided us – thank you for all that you have done – but my speech tonight is directed to my peers. For the 2012 graduates, this is for you. In order to make this a bit more interesting than a long graduation speech – I originally considered analyzing a Dr. Seuss quote – I chose lyrics from fi ve songs to represent each year of high school and the future. The lyrics come from popular songs from the past four years that, re-gardless of whether or not you like them, should be familiar to everyone.

Let’s start with freshman year, back when we were so young and eager to explore our different pas-sions. “We are Young” by Fun captures that sentiment:

TonightWe are young

So let’s set the world on fi reWe can burn brighter

than the sunOur diverse interests then in-

cluded sports, clubs, music, the-ater, art, and, occasionally, aca-demics. We were determined to fi nd a place for ourselves inside this big school. We made new friends and tried new things, and all of our efforts shone with youthful optimism.

That enthusiasm carried into sophomore year, when we had our fi rst B1 Day. In honor of that day designed to raise awareness about and celebrate our differ-ences, I chose these lines from “Airplanes” by B.o.b to embody our sophomore year:

Can we pretend that airplanesIn the night sky

Are like shooting stars?I could really use a wish

right nowWish right nowWish right now

It seemed like way too big of a wish to want everyone to sit down and listen to one another. Howev-er, through the funny video, group activities, and panel sessions, we all got to know each other a little better. The empathy, kindness, and compassion that fi lled the hallways during our fi rst B1 Day left a permanent impression that brought us closer as a class.

Next came junior year, as we rushed to cram in grades and ac-tivities to impress college admis-sions offi cers. Katy Perry’s “Fire-work” says it best:

Do you know that there’s still a chance for you

‘Cause there’s a spark in youYou just gotta ignite the light

and let it shineJust own the night like the

fourth of JulyWe tried to fi t everything into

that brief year, ranging from SATs, varsity sports, and more clubs to hanging out with friends as often as possible. We were all too aware that our time in high

school was winding down, but at the same time we relished becom-ing upperclassmen. This was the year of doing everything, living by the motto of carpe diem.

And then, there was senior year. OneRepublic’s “Good Life” aptly summarizes our fi nal year in high school:

Day turns to night, night turns to whatever we want

We’re young enough to sayOh, this has gotta be

the good lifeWe had aged and matured dur-

ing high school, but there were still plenty of new opportunities to savor in this fi nal year – after fi nishing all of our college ap-plications, of course. We had our last adventures, enjoying the con-cluding moments of this phase in our lives. It’s highly bittersweet looking back, because as much as most of us want to graduate and leave, it’s a little sad to think about what we’re leaving behind. Nevertheless, it’s also exciting to consider the future that is coming up.

Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” speaks to that bright future.

Don’t hide yourself in regretJust love yourself

and you’re setI’m on the right track baby

I was born this wayLet’s all go out and follow our

dreams, reaching as high as we can. These songs are like our years in high school; whether or not you liked your time at CHS, you dealt with it daily. However, build on what we have already

accomplished. Live your own life, pursue your own dreams, and when we meet again, let’s all

have new songs, unique to our-selves, that defi ne our lives.

Congrats class of 2012!

Chen Tells Fellow Classmates That Life’s Road Will ContinueLadies and gentlemen, fac-

ulty and staff, parents and students, friends and family, ath-letes and mathletes, theatre kids and photography students, NHS members and Aluminati tutors, Patriot fans and... other fans, AP students and seniors that had to take fi nals, fellow members of the CHS family: Good evening.

We are a multifaceted and di-verse group, traveling along a number of separate paths. But we have all gathered together this evening in this forking of roads to share a common joy. Years of effort, in school and out, have brought we four hundred seniors to graduation. This would not have been possible without the unfl agging support of all of our teachers, guidance counselors, faculty, and family. Seniors, give our benefactors a round of ap-plause!

It’s been a long road. Elemen-tary school, with recess and

kickball, seemed like such sim-ple days. But then Dodd rolled around and we had to deal with teachers trying to prepare us for high school, and no more recess. We were prepared for a year, maybe, and then our sophomore teachers wanted us to learn new methods of reading and calculat-ing for CAPT. After CAPT there were SAT vocab and that absolute mystery of expository writing. By junior year, many of us also had to learn to take three hour-long AP exams. And this semester some of us even wrote weekly extra credit essays for gym class. Well, maybe that was just me. And of course, all this is just to prepare us for college. The road has been long, and promises to be longer still. But all of us are sitting here today; it is proof that we all have successfully walked this road.

We have followed our hearts and our intuitions on our roads. From going with our guts on

a multiple choice exam to making a spli t-second decision dur-ing a game, we have all seen that our instincts can lead us to the right decision.

We have taken bold and

courageous action on our roads. Whether it’s overcoming shyness to attend a social event, overcom-ing self doubt to take that AP course, or overcoming fear of public speaking to make an an-nouncement, present a project, or deliver a commencement speech.

We have used imagination and creativity to fi nd our passions on our roads. We’ve written articles for the Rampage — sometimes en espanol. We’ve performed in school plays. We’ve picked up sports and even started new teams.

We have also all encountered personal failures on our roads. But from failure we’ve learned that we do not need to be perfect, and that sometimes taking a de-tour can lead to a better path. Per-haps our losses even added to the experience of life.

We hurdled every obstacle on the path to graduation, and now here we are. We can take a mo-ment today, and all of this week, and maybe even this whole sum-mer to just bathe in joy of the present. But sooner or later we’ll need to get back to walking that road. And that’s important.

Our paths lead off to college or trade school or the military, and there will be more challeng-es there. We’ll need to hone our disciplines and pull long hours studying and training. We can take breaks, but not for long. Be-

cause as Aristotle put it, “excel-lence is not an act, but a habit.”

And above all, on this path of life, we must maintain our integ-rity. To quote the former CEO of General Electric David Calhoun, “You must achieve the confi dence of knowing that you possess abso-lute, unbending, unimpeachable integrity. Everyone must know that. Above all else, it is integrity that defi nes your character.”

And so in the roads to come, we will need to resist the temptation to stray from the path of success.

If everyone else is straying, make it everyone minus you, and march down that road to the beat of your own drum!

We leave our high school careers behind today with di-plomas and an education. Both would not have been attain-

able without the sweat and tears and pure nagging of our parents. They have helped us along our roads; they’ve given us a hand when we’ve wanted it, forced us to accept that hand when we didn’t. They’ve planned routes on maps and helped us fi nd our way when we’ve gotten lost. They’ve walked the walk with us.

And so a fi nal reminder from me is that whenever we can, we should remember to give back. Do something for the giants on whose shoulders you stood to reach where you are today, espe-cially if they’re paying for col-lege!

Thank you so much for your at-tention everyone--May our paths cross some more in the years to come.

And Class of 2012: We did it!

Class President

Nisar Credits Peers For Helping Him Acclimate Back To U.S.Good evening. On behalf of

the 2012 Class Offi cers, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Dr. Florio, the administrators, the Board of Edu-cation members, our class advis-ers Mr. Hunter and Mr. Lougee, parents, and family. I would also like to thank the underclassmen that are here to help on our spe-cial night.

I would like to take a moment to especially thank all the teach-ers that are here today. Some-times we get so involved with our own lives that we forget the many hours of personal and profession-al time you have spent helping us, encouraging us, and teaching us. You have played important roles in why we sit here today. Thank you for what you have done for us and what you continue to do for students in the Cheshire Public Schools.

And now, Class of 2012: Con-gratulations!

Four years have passed by, one thousand three hundred and eighty seven days have gone by, and today is the day we have all been waiting for. When I look back on these past four years, I am reminded of all the moments that we have spent together, all the memories that we have formed, and all the new life les-sons that we have learned. It has been an honor to serve as your Class President for these past two years. When I moved back to the United States in 2008, I faced many challenges. I had dif-fi culty speaking English, under-standing how the school system worked, assimilating into the American culture. The fi rst few months were diffi cult but, as time passed, things got better. Things got better because of the support guidance, faculty, and the admin-istration offered but, most impor-tantly, things got better because of you. Because of the support, encouragement, and friendship you offered. Serving as your class president, I’ve seen how you care about one another, how you stand up for one another, and how you support one another. This class is special and I have no doubt that this class will be remembered in the halls of Cheshire High School.

But what will we be remem-bered for? For having approxi-mately 35 AP scholars, for achieving high GPAs, for win-ning three State Championships, for achieving high scores on stan-dardized tests, for the number of honor cords each one of us has received, for fulfi lling a set of requirements? There is no doubt that we have achieved a lot, but we won’t be remembered for these quantitative elements. We will, however, be remembered for what these quantitative elements measure, for what these quantita-tive elements represent, and for what these quantitative elements show about us: faith, determina-tion, courage, dedication, service, friendship, and love. These are the qualities that we will be remem-bered for in the halls of Cheshire High, these are the qualities that

make us special, and these are the qualities that we need to survive in the real world.

Today is the last day we sit to-gether as a class, and today we be-gin a new chapter in our lives. We have all chosen to embark on dif-ferent journeys. Most of us have decided to go to college. Some of us have decided to join the navy, military, or workforce. No mat-ter where we’re going what will always bind us together are the memories that we have shared, the friendships we have created, and the experiences we have had at Cheshire High School.

The Class of 2012 has taught me three invaluable life lessons that I want to share with you to-day:

First, don’t be afraid to take risks. In life, you have to take risks. If you don’t take risks, you won’t know what you’re capable of do-ing. As Nelson Mandela said, “There is no passion to be found in play-ing small – in settling for a life that’s less than the one you’re capable of living.” There were many people who said we couldn’t build this turf fi eld, but guess what? We did, with the help of the Cheshire C o m m u n i t y and parents. The passion many of you showed for this project was inspiring and laudable.

S e c o n d ,

you can’t succeed in life without failing. Failure is part of life and that is something all of us have to accept. At some point in life, all of us are going to fail, but it’s not how we fail or what mistakes we make, but it’s about how we respond. It’s about how we pick ourselves up, learn from our fail-ures, and move on. That is what we should remember. Today and moving forward, it doesn’t mat-ter how many games, matches, or meets we’ve lost, it doesn’t matter how many quizzes or tests we’ve failed, it doesn’t matter how many mistakes we have made during our high school career but what matters is whether we have learned from these mistakes or

not and where we’re headed. And fi nally, use your talents to

make this world a better place. As Denzel Washington said in a re-cent speech, “You’ll never see a U-haul behind a hearse.” In other words, when you have the op-portunity, “go big or go home.” You can’t take your talents with you, so use what you have and leave this world in a better place then you found it. Cheshire High School, and especially this class, has already shown that: the the-ater kids have put on amazing shows for the community, the Cheshire High School Band got invited to represent Connecticut in the National Memorial Parade in DC, the Enough club is fund-ing three schools in Pakistan, the BRAVE program hosted one of the largest Pearl Harbor Day events in the country, the Young Poli-ticians Pro-gram has inspired stu-dents to be-come active in the politi-cal process, the undefeat-ed volleyball team has re-peated perfec-tion by win-ning the state championship two years in a row, the

Cheshire Girls Rugby Team, in its fi rst season, against all odds, won its fi rst state championship, the Relay For Life has inspired stu-dents to raise thousands of dollars for cancer research, the B-1 Day event has made students more aware of the challenges others face and how a smile can change someone’s day, and the list goes on.

I am proud to be a part of this class. This class has inspired me and taught me my greatest life lessons at Cheshire High School: we’re not afraid to try; we’re not afraid to fail; we’re not afraid to give it our all. This class has achieved impossible things against impossible odds. This class’s determination has been seen by people in the classroom,

No Better Time To Be Alive Than Now, O’Reilly Tells ClassFirst off, I’d like to thank the

families, friends, and faculty here to honor the Class of 2012, we made it!

When we fi rst opened the pages to this story, here we were freshmen at Cheshire High School knees trembling as we entered this seemingly enormous place, wondering how we were to succeed. And here we are now successful in our education and masters of this school. Next year we are going to be freshmen in an even larger school, the school of life. But, like we have done here at Cheshire High School, we will work endlessly to ensure we are the masters of our own lives.

We owe this invaluable prepa-ration to our teachers who have

worked tirelessly to condition us for the rough roads ahead. Teach-ers inspire us, they instruct us on how to pursue our dreams, and even help us fi nd out what those dreams are. I myself didn’t know what I was going to pursue until my teachers helped me discover my goals. We all have that teach-er who has contributed so much to our upbringing. Socrates said “education is the sacred relation-ship between mentor and pupil”, and these words are alive and well at Cheshire High. So now, let’s please applaud our mentors for all to witness.

But now, back to us. Looking back on what we have accom-plished in so few years gives me hope for the future. Every day,

pundits, professionals, profes-sors, media personalities, and ex-perts in everything from A-Z tell us how troubled our future looks. There is one thing they never take into account though, our up and coming generation. I look out into this crowd and I am only reas-sured of a promising future. You see, there has never been a better time to be alive than now! Un-like the past, now doesn’t require a certain skill set or trait. Now more than ever we need our intel-lectuals and thinkers, our workers and activists, our charitable and industrious, and our dreamers and leaders, all of whom are graduat-ing today.

Now this isn’t to say we have reached our peak and may now

rest on our laurels, oh no, there is still much to accom-plish and the circumstances surrounding us today require us now more than ever to get up and lead the way against any opposition. There will be instances when we’ll be faced with challenges that force us to morph our lives to meet the needs of that time, but we should never (and I mean never) let our dreams get stamped out. In our ever changing lives we only have two constants, the love and support of our families, and our goals and ambitions in our minds, and I tell you now that no mat-ter what we are faced with, no matter how impossible it may seem at the time, we should pursue our goals with all the fervor in our hearts and resources available to us, and we should never con-sider stopping until we’re content.

With these words in mind, if there is one thing more im-portant than any other lesson we learned at CHS it’s how to combat adversity. We will

have our moments of fame and glory in life, yes, but more so than anything else we will be fi ghting the ever evolving face of hard-ship, trying to keep its seemingly unstoppable presence out of our lives. And as we have done be-fore, we will transcend any adver-sity even in its strongest forms.

As we leave this place and go on to our next stages in life, we will meet new people, and go to new places. The body of peers we know will expand from Cheshire High School students to the en-tirety of the human race. But, no matter what happens, no matter where we go and who we meet, we have a link that is larger than the graduation year we share, and more worthy than the mascot we cheer for. We have been part of each other’s life experiences. We have experienced childhood to-gether, and we have built memo-ries together which will give us future happiness when we remi-nisce about the glory days. I tru-ly mean it when I say that I am honored to know each and every one of you. I am honored to have cheered with you all, cried with some, and laughed with others. I

am proud to have stressed with you over tests, and celebrated the victories no matter their im-portance. I cherish the fact that I have called many of you my friends and never have felt cast out by anyone. Soon I will feel privileged to share the title of Cheshire High School Alumni with everyone here.

Now as I come to the end of this speech I ask each one of you

to look around, feel this energy, and remember your graduation ceremony because, though this may be the end to a chapter in our lives, by no means is this the end of our story. Each and every one of us is the author of our own des-tinies and we can make our lives out to what we want them to be. So, as we end this chapter, I’d like to congratulate the Class of 2012 and their parents on the story so far— story that is to be continued.

sports fi elds, and even when we have had to battle issues such as health. If you really want to know what we have achieved, remem-ber this statistic when you walk across this stage to pick up your diploma: In the United States, ev-ery 26 seconds a kid drops out of high school. Every 26 seconds. What we have achieved here is monumental. Be proud of your-self and understand that any goal you set for yourself is attainable, if you are willing to work for it.

When thinking about how to end this speech, I talked to many people and they told me to end it

with something that will resonate with you, something that you will remember, and something that only you and I will understand, so I looked no further than to Facebook and Twitter: Hashtag YOLO. You Only Live Once, so Class of 2012, live life to the full-est. Smile. Make others smile, and be happy. It has been an honor to serve you as your Class President and to have known each and every one of you. As we enter the real world, “may the odds be ever in our favor.”

Thank you. God bless you and may God

bless the Class of 2012.
