Report number: 11-08 June 2011

Knowing the post-graduation plans1 of Loyola seniors is important for at least three reasons. First, part of Loyola’s mission is to “offer the opportunity to acquire a depth of learning and to master the skills appropriate to a particular discipline or profession” 2

; thus, it is important to find out how well that goal is being met. Second, many prospective students and parents ask about post-graduation outcomes of Loyola undergraduates. Third, external entities, such as the College Board and organizations that do college rankings, request information about Loyola students’ post-graduation activities.

At the end of spring semester, 2011, Loyola began administering a new survey to graduating seniors3 about their post-graduation plans for summer, including employment and graduate/professional school plans.4

Because many seniors have not yet found a job (or even started looking for a job) before graduation, follow-up surveys will be conducted three, six, and nine months after graduation (seniors who already have jobs will not be re-surveyed). Those results will be presented in a future report.

Plans

• Of the respondents to the Graduating Senior Survey, about a third said that they did not have a job, and would look for a new job over the summer (see Table 1). About 24% said that they would stay in a job that they already had, but also look for a new job.

• Ten percent of the responding seniors reported that they would stay in a job that they already had (not looking for a new job).

• Thirteen percent of the seniors reported having

1 Includes employment and graduate/professional school attendance. 2 See http://www.luc.edu/loyolapromise/mission.shtml. 3 Selected academic characteristics are presented in Appendix A. 4 The response rate for this survey was 48%, with 728 seniors responding. Of these, 688 completed the entire survey.

a new job that they would start after graduation.

• About 3% of the seniors planned to start graduate/professional school immediately, during the summer.

• About 9% of the seniors planned to take the summer off, and 1% said that they were going to travel.

• Eight percent of the seniors reported that they would be doing some “Other” thing (see Appendix B for other plans listed).

• Twenty-eight percent of the seniors said that they had applied to at least one graduate/professional school.

Current employment

• Of the 92 seniors who reported that they were starting a new job, the most common way of finding that job was personal networking (26%; see Table 2). Thirteen percent found their job through an internship and 12% through a referral from a family member or friend.

• See Appendices D and E for lists of employers and job titles of employed seniors (current and new jobs).

• Of all seniors who already had jobs (whether new or not), 40% said that their job was closely or very closely related to their bachelor’s degree from Loyola, but 28% said it was not at all closely related (see Table 3).

• About 60% of the employed seniors said that Loyola had prepared them well or very well for their job; only 12% said that Loyola had prepared them for their job not at all well.

• Employed seniors were more likely to be working part time (55%) than full time.

• Fifty-six percent of the employed seniors said they were working at a for-profit company, while 22% said they were working for a non-profit organization. Twelve percent said they were working for the government in some way.

• The great majority of employed seniors were working in Chicago (54%) or the metropolitan area (20%).

• The majority of employed seniors said they were very satisfied (28%) or satisfied (54%) with their job.

Key findings

Graduating Senior Exit Survey, 2011

Office of Institutional Research 2

• Most employed seniors (71%) reported earning $24,000 or less a year, but this is due primarily to the fact that most are working only part time.

Graduate/professional school plans

• Of those graduating seniors who said that they had applied to at least one graduate/ professional school, 69% said they had already been accepted.

• Of those seniors who said they had already been accepted to graduate/professional school, 47% planned to pursue a master’s level degree, while 38% planned to pursue a professional degree.

• Medicine was the most common field to which those applicants already accepted to graduate/professional school intended to enter (30%), followed by Law (18%) and the Sciences (12%).

• Of accepted applicants, 39% said that the field in which they were pursuing a degree was the same as the one in which they had earned their bachelor’s degree at Loyola; 41% said it was somewhat related.

• Seventy eight percent of accepted applicants said that Loyola had prepared them well or very well for graduate/professional school.

• Most (57%) graduating seniors (including those who already had a job) said that they would be looking for a new job over the summer.

• Most seniors who were starting a new job after graduation found that job on their own, through personal networks, or through an internship. Few found their job through University resources such as the Career Development Center, RamblerLink, or a Loyola Job Fair.

• More than a quarter of graduating seniors had applied to graduate/professional school, about two thirds of whom had been accepted.

• Only 40% of employed seniors said that their job was closely or very closely related to their Loyola degree. However, most employed seniors said that Loyola had prepared them well or very well for their job.

• Just over half of employed seniors said they were only working part time.

• A majority of employed seniors were working in Chicago or the metropolitan area.

• A majority of employed seniors were satisfied or very satisfied with their job.

• Annual salaries were quite low, primarily because so many employed seniors were working part time.

• The majority of seniors already accepted to graduate/professional school said the degree they were pursuing was to at least some degree in the same field as their bachelor’s degree from Loyola.
