Please read this entire guide carefully The following information is provided as general guidance to applicants to graduate-entry medicine in Australia.

However, all applicants should routinely check the websites of their chosen institutions and the GEMSAS website for

admission updates.

How GEMSAS will contact you Email will be the primary source of contact between GEMSAS and applicants and there may also be a need to send

you letters by mail to your nominated postal address.

It is essential that you provide a current email address which will be valid from April 2016 to February 2017 and that

you regularly check your emails, including your junk or spam folders. Expect emails from GEMSAS at any time during

the process but especially around the time of interview offers. Some of the participating universities will only

communicate with applicants via email.

Some email messages may not be accepted or may be flagged as spam by some email providers (e.g. Hotmail or

Yahoo).

Applicants are advised to provide an email address other than their current university address (unless it will be

available until February 2017), Hotmail or Yahoo email addresses.

Neither GEMSAS nor the universities will be held responsible for undeliverable or unread email communication.

All GPA queries should be addressed to GEMSAS. Please check the GEMSAS website GPA FAQs and try the on-line GPA

calculator before submitting your query.

School specific enquiries should be directed to the schools directly. Contact information can be found on the website

at www.gemsas.edu.au/medical-schools and on page 74 of this Guide.

Information about the graduate-entry medicine admissions process for GAMSAT Consortium schools (GEMSAS) can

be found on the website www.gemsas.edu.au/gemsas-processes.

* The University of Sydney, Monash University and Flinders University are not participating in GEMSAS. Applicants for places at these universities

Admission policies Offers

Successful applicants will be given a firm date by which to accept an offer of a place and offers not accepted according

to the school’s instructions by that date will lapse.

If an applicant declines an offer of a place, or allows the offer to lapse, they will not be considered for another place

or receive another offer.

Deferral

Deferral of a place is unlikely. However, some universities permit deferral, particularly to complete an Honours year.

Please consult the schools’ websites or discuss the possibility of being permitted to defer with the universities to which

you wish to apply.

Exclusion

An applicant who has been excluded from any university must indicate this when they apply. The schools may contact

applicants for further detail on receipt of the application data.

Admission and application irregularities

Applicants should be aware that the presentation of forged documents is a criminal offence in Australia and that

universities may take appropriate action in such cases.

All tertiary study must be declared in the application. For the purpose of university admission, the withholding of

information and the submission of incorrect or misleading information are deemed fraudulent. Action taken in such

cases may include cancellation of an application for admission, withdrawal of an offer of admission, or cancellation of

an enrolment.

Applicants who submit fraudulent documents or otherwise seek to gain an advantage by fraudulent means may be

banned from future applications through GEMSAS.

Only your first submitted application will be processed, regardless of which application has been paid for.

Schools’ policies

Each University may have its own additional admission policies (which may include policies on prior or current studies,

enrolment irregularities and/or transfers). To confirm if there are additional policies, review each school’s entry in this

Guide and the websites of the schools to which you intend to apply.

Appeals process

If you wish to appeal any decision made in the processing of your application, you are most welcome to do so. Please

provide a written explanation of why you disagree with the decision in question. You are welcome to provide

supporting evidence. Address your appeal to the GAMSAT Selection Appeals Committee and email it to

[email protected]. The Appeals Committee will consider your appeal and provide a written response within two

weeks of receipt of your email. The Terms of Reference for the GAMSAT Selection Appeals Committee are available

on request (please send your request to [email protected]). Note that this Committee can only hear appeals against

decisions made in the processing of your application. Appeals against offer decisions made by participating schools

must be made to the individual school concerned.

If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend

to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GAMSAT

Consortium courses as soon as possible.

Application Process Information in this section is generally common to all the schools, but is subject to the specific requirements outlined

in the school entries and on the school websites.

GEMSAS and the schools make every effort to ensure the accuracy of information provided in this Admission Guide at

the time of publication. However, applicants must consult the GEMSAS and university websites for more detailed and

specific information and for updates.

There are three components of the application process: GAMSAT (www.gamsat.acer.edu.au)

All applicants for Commonwealth Supported Places and other domestic places at graduate-entry schools (i.e.

citizens/permanent residents of Australia and citizens of New Zealand) must have a current score on the Graduate

Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).

GAMSAT results are valid for two years: i.e. if you sat the Australian or Ireland test in 2016 you may use the results

obtained to apply for a graduate entry course commencing in 2017 and/or 2018. As such, Australian GAMSAT 2015

results are also valid for use in applications to courses commencing in 2017.

The UK GAMSAT scores are valid for application in the year following the test and the year following that. There is a

very helpful table on the GAMSAT website that shows the validity of all the GAMSAT tests.

Your GAMSAT results show a score for each of the three test Sections and an Overall Score. All GAMSAT Consortium

medical schools (except The University of Melbourne) rank applicants using the Overall GAMSAT Score (with required

minimum Section scores normally around 50). The University of Melbourne uses an average GAMSAT Score. The

acceptable GAMSAT scores may be different for each of the universities, and may vary from year to year. When

deciding whether or not to submit an application, you are advised to make sure that your GAMSAT scores fall within

the acceptable ranges reported in the individual university entries in this Guide. You can evaluate your standing in

relation to other candidates who sat GAMSAT in the same year as you did, by consulting the chart included with your

Statement of Results. Please note that neither GEMSAS nor ACER staff have the authority to review individual GAMSAT

transcripts or GAMSAT results or to offer advice on the likelihood of selection. GAMSAT candidates are responsible

for determining their eligibility to apply.

Registration for the GAMSAT and application for admission to the graduate programs are separate processes.

Application

Applicants are selected for interview based on one or more of the following criteria:

performance in GAMSAT;

performance in a qualifying degree (as indicated by GPA);

performance in a portfolio, special application or supplementary form or autobiographical statement where

required.

The Australian National University, Deakin University, The University of Melbourne and The University of Western

Australia combine the first two criteria when ranking applicants for interview. The University of Melbourne uses an

unweighted GAMSAT.

Griffith University ranks applicants for interview based on selections rank derived from a 50/50 combination of an

unweighted GPA (converted to a percentage) and the overall GAMSAT score.

The University of Queensland uses the GPA as a hurdle, then ranks applicants by GAMSAT results using the GPA as a

tie-breaker where necessary. The University of Queensland does not interview candidates.

The University of Wollongong, The University of Notre Dame, Australia (Fremantle) and The University of Notre Dame,

Australia (Sydney) rank applicants on combined GPA, GAMSAT results and portfolio/written submission.

Supporting documentation

Supporting documentation will be required if:

You studied at a non-ARTS1 university at any time.

You have an Australian rural background (see page 16)

You need to supply supporting documentation required by individual schools

When you complete your Application Form, you will be presented with relevant coversheets which you must print and

attach as directed to the documents you are submitting. Failure to include all requested documents may disadvantage

you. Please send only those documents that have been specifically requested. Note that there are two different

addresses to which documents are to be sent. Please ensure you follow the instructions on the coversheets to ensure

your documents are sent to the correct address.

1. If any of your tertiary study is from a non-ARTS university please remember to submit your original transcript(s)

postmarked no later than 5.00pm your time on Monday 13th June 2016. This can include exchange study and

names and addresses of two people who can comment on the applicant’s aptitude for research, one of whom must be the Honours/ Masters supervisor

Deakin University

Financial Disadvantage

Applicants who are able to demonstrate that they have been in receipt of an approved Centrelink or StudyLink (NZ equivalent of Centrelink) benefit, for at least 12 months during their undergraduate degree, receive a 2% bonus.

The School of Medicine recognises the following Centrelink benefits: ABSTUDY, AUSTUDY, Parent Payment (Partnered or Single), Youth Allowance, Disability Pension, Veterans Means Assessed Pension.

StudyLink benefits apply for applicants from New Zealand. NB: this does not include a StudyLink loan.

Please ensure supporting documentation clearly shows the approved benefit and supports a minimum of 12 months.

Supporting documentation includes (approved benefit must clearly be listed):

A letter from Centrelink or StudyLink,

a PAYG Payment Summary,

a PAYG Statement (showing a minimum payment period of 52 weeks),

Prior Clinical Experience in a Health Discipline

Applicants who have completed one year of full-time clinical practice as a registered health professional, receive a 2% bonus. The following health disciplines will attract a 2% bonus: chiropractic, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology,

occupational therapy, dietetics, speech pathology, paramedics, and practitioners of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Chinese Medicine, and Medical Radiation. The 17 above listed health disciplines are the only health disciplines which have been approved by the School of Medicine Admission and Selection Committee for the 2016-2017 selection round. No other health disciplines are eligible to receive the clinical experience in a health discipline bonus. Please provide documentation that will show:

12 months of full-time clinical experience (e.g. letter of support from employer / group certificate), AND

evidence of registered health professional status (e.g. registration certificate / print out from AHPRA website).

Supporting documentation includes:

Supporting letters from the applicant’s employer stating length of employment and duties,

registration documentation,

payslips,

group certificate,

tax returns.

Periods of provisional registration, or as an intern, are excluded.

3. Supporting documents for The University of Melbourne’s Graduate Access Melbourne Scheme: Applicants

must submit their documents DIRECTLY to The University of Melbourne via the relevant online webform no

later than 11.59pm EST on Tuesday 31st May 2016.

Only applicants who have experienced disadvantage during their undergraduate degree or members of specific recognised groups, as listed below, are eligible to apply for Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM).

Applicants with rural or isolated background

Indigenous Australian applicants

Applicants with previous status as a refugee or holders of a Humanitarian visa

Applicants who experienced any of the following that had an effect on their undergraduate studies: disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances; disability or a chronic medical condition; or personal difficulties.

All applicants (Prerequisite subject completion)

Applicants who have completed approved prerequisite subjects do not need to submit subject descriptions. Lists of approved prerequisites subjects can be found in the GEMSAS online application form and at http://sc.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/prerequisites For applicants whose subjects have not been assessed for pre-requisite equivalence: Applicants must submit documentation through the web form http://sc.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/prerequisites by Friday 6 May 2016 for assessment of pre-requisite equivalency.

Applicants who submit complete documentation by Friday 6 May 2016 will be advised of the subject equivalence before the course application closing date. Submissions received after this date will be processed and the outcome issued within three weeks of submission.

Applicants who have not submitted documentation for assessment OR have not demonstrated equivalence as part of their GEMSAS application (e.g. evidence of relevant completed or enrolled subjects) will be deemed to have failed the pre-requisite requirements.

City of Greater Geelong Bonus

The rural bonus is also given to applicants who have lived in the City of Greater Geelong for at least 10 years cumulatively or 5 years consecutively from birth. Complete the questions in the application form and submit required supporting documentation.

Residence in ASGC-RA 2 or the City of Greater Geelong: a bonus of 2% of the combined GPA and GAMSAT score.

category/sub-quota concerned.

Bachelor degree All applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of a Bachelor or Honours degree. Undergraduate Australian

degrees must be from a Commonwealth accredited institution (see http://www.teqsa.gov.au/national-

register). (Note that undergraduate degrees include Bachelor and Honours degree). Overseas degrees must be

recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) as equivalent to an Australian Bachelor

degree. Your qualifications will be assessed for equivalency as part of your application process. Please do not contact

NOOSR for assessment of your degree.

For those in the final year of study, satisfactory completion of the degree in 2016 will be a condition of entry. Note

that if you cannot complete and provide evidence of completion of your degree in the 2016 calendar year, any offer

you have received that is conditional upon completion of your current degree may be withdrawn.

Applicants enrolled in a two-year degree, a three or four year embedded degree or one-year conversion degree, or

those who have completed a higher degree without a prior Bachelor degree should consult their preferred school/s

to ascertain eligibility. Note that not all schools accept such degrees. Please see individual school entries in this

Guide.

Grade Point Average (GPA) GEMSAS will calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA) from electronic copies of academic transcripts (from ARTS

institutions) or paper transcripts. Original hard-copy transcripts will be needed if you have completed your degree or

any part of your qualifying degree at an overseas university or any university not included in the list of ARTS institutions

in Appendix A.

Applicants may wish to calculate their GPA according to the instructions on the GEMSAS website

(www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations). A GPA calculator is available on the application page

(www.applygemsas.com.au/) for use. Please note that any GPA calculated by an applicant will be an estimated GPA

and used only for the information of the applicant.

No preference is given to graduates with particular Bachelor degrees. The GAMSAT Consortium encourages individuals

from diverse educational backgrounds who will bring to the profession a variety of talents and interests.

Exception:

Applicants to Medicine at The University of Melbourne must have successfully completed approved

prerequisite second year level studies in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.

The GPA indicates the level of performance in the qualifying degree. There is no differentiation of GPA between

institutions or courses. It should be emphasised that a science major is not a prerequisite, and that academic

excellence in other areas, such as the humanities and social sciences, is encouraged and recognised.

Interviews No domestic applicant will receive more than one interview offer from a medical school participating in GEMSAS in

the 2016 admissions round, for entry in 2017. The interview is designed to assess qualities considered by the schools

to be associated with success in both medical school and later practice, and is conducted by trained interviewers.

Academic performance is not discussed at the interview.

An exception is for applicants who qualify for the Guaranteed Entry Pathway at The University of Melbourne. These

applicants will be considered by The University of Melbourne separately to the GEMSAS process and must apply in

accordance with instructions available at http://medicine.unimelb.edu.au/study-

here/doctor_of_medicine/application_process/domestic. This consideration will include an interview. Guaranteed

Full Fee eligible applicants must also apply via GEMSAS if they wish to be considered for CSP and bonded places at

Melbourne or other medical schools.

Selected applicants receive an invitation to interview by letter or email. This invitation must be presented on arrival at

the medical school, together with a valid passport or current photo-bearing driver’s licence for identification purposes.

Some schools require that you supply a passport photograph prior to interview. If this applies to you, you will be

notified when interview invitations are issued, with instructions on how and when to submit your digital photo.

Applicants must meet all expenses associated with attending the interview.

Applicants unsuccessful in receiving an interview at any of the medical schools they applied to will be notified by email

by the GEMSAS team. Applicants who were not interviewed will not participate in further processing.

Exception: The University of Queensland (UQ) does not interview applicants for the graduate entry program. UQ’s first

round of place offers coincides with the release of interview offers from the other institutions. The later UQ offer

rounds are normally filled by applicants who included UQ as a lower preference but were not offered places after

being interviewed by their higher preference.

Please note: If you are eligible to be made an offer at a University that did not interview you, the University

reserves the right to call you for an informal conversation prior to offers being made. This is to ensure that the

applicant is aware of specific course and University requirements. This conversation does not constitute an

interview or indicate an offer of a place.

Offers Selection into graduate-entry medicine is based on up to four criteria:

performance in GAMSAT;

performance as indicated by GPA. Please see school entries for details about qualifying degrees and GPA

calculations;

performance in interview (except The University of Queensland);

performance in a portfolio, special application or supplementary form or autobiographical statement.

The way in which each university combines these criteria when making their final offers varies. For more information

refer to the individual university entries which begin on page 32 of this Guide. Alternatively you can consult each

A successful application may lead to an offer of one of a range of places, including bonded and full-fee places. When

you apply you will be asked (for each school on your preference list), to choose (and for some schools, rank) the types

of places you will be prepared to accept. Selection is based on ranked lists and quotas. The quota (i.e. number of

places) available for each offer type is restricted. To maximise your chances of receiving an offer at the schools of your

choice, consider listing all types of places. If you omit (for instance) the Bonded Medical Places (BMP) offer type and

you are ranked to get a BMP offer, it will not be made and you’ll drop down to your next preferred school for

consideration. Please read carefully all the information about bonded places on the DoH website at

www.health.gov.au/bmpscheme.

When allocations are being made, schools will allocate quotas for each offer type. The allocation will be made using

that school’s ranked list in order: CSP, BMP and FEE (if applicable). Some schools will ask you to rank all offer types

and some will just want you to indicate which offer types you are prepared to accept if offered. To list only one offer

type means you limit the available places that can be offered to you.

Individual School Details:

For The University of Queensland you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for, however

no consideration is given to preferred offer type when offers are made. Offers will be made in the order of

CSP first and BMP second.

For The University of Melbourne you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for. You will

not be considered for a type of place that you have not listed, however no consideration is given to the order

of preferred offer types listed when offers are made. Offers will be made in the following order: CSP, BMP,

and FEE, with the most highly ranked applicants being offered CSP places and so on down the merit order until

all vacancies are filled. It is important that applicants who are not in a position to pay for a full fee (FEE) paying

place DO NOT list this type of place in their application for the University of Melbourne. Once made an offer

into a FEE place it is not possible to swap into a CSP or BMP place.

For The University of Western Australia you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for,

however no consideration is given to preferred offer type when offers are made. Offers will be made in the

following order: CSP then BMP.

ANU will allocate place types based on the ranking of the applicant and their preferences.

For Griffith University you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for in your preferred

order. Allocations will be according to applicant rank and preference.

If you decline an offer of a place, you will not be considered for another place or receive another offer.

If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend

to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GAMSAT

Consortium courses as soon as possible.

Quotas Each university has a quota for the year’s intake of domestic students (Australian citizens/permanent residents and

New Zealand citizens). This includes Commonwealth supported non-bonded places (CSP) and Commonwealth

supported bonded places (BMP) as well as Australian full fee places (Melbourne and Notre Dame only).

Most schools are obliged to fill at least 25% of all Commonwealth Supported Places with students from a rural

Rurality Please note the criteria for rurality has changed: rural background is now defined as residency for at least 10 years

cumulatively or any 5 years consecutively in an ASGS-RA 2-5 area, from birth.

If you have lived in an Australian rural area, ASGC-RA 2 to 5, for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively, from

birth, you may be eligible for consideration in rural schemes and sub-quotas. You will need to complete the Rurality

question in the Application Form and submit supporting documentation. For information about rural sub quotas or

bonus points please view the schools' entry requirements pages.

The ASGC-RA is a geographical classification tool developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2006. The purpose

of the RA structure is to classify data from census Collection Districts (CDs) into broad geographical categories, called

Remoteness Areas (RAs). The RA categories are defined in terms of ‘remoteness’ – the physical distance of a location

from the nearest urban centre based on population size. Under this classification system remoteness is updated each

census. The most recent classification is the one by which we will assess your rurality.

The Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS) will use these guidelines in the processing of Rurality

Claims.

The ASGC-RA system is made up of 5 categories:

RA-1 Major city

RA-2 Inner regional

RA-3 Outer regional

RA-4 Remote

RA-5 Very remote

If you have lived in an ASGC-RA 2 to 5 area for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively, from birth, and wish to

be considered for rural schemes and sub-quotas, you will need to provide documentary evidence. Note that the rural

includes the cover sheet you will print off when you submit your on-line application.

You cannot claim time in the future as part of the 5 or 10 years, as there is no way to establish proof that you

will continue to reside in a rural setting.

Time spent at a holiday home (second residence) or during school holidays in a rural setting, will not be

considered.

FAQs about the application process What happens to my application?

GEMSAS is a computerised matching system which calculates GPAs and bonuses; assesses applications for eligibility;

and uses an algorithm to rank and allocate eligible applicants to their highest preferenced medical school. For more

details about the matching algorithm, please refer to www.gemsas.edu.au/gemsas-processes.

Applications will be assessed according to the selection rules of each preferenced school. GEMSAS will assess the

eligibility and competitiveness of all applicants for their first preference medical school. If the applicant is not eligible

or not ranked highly enough he or she will be assessed for the second preference school and so on until the applicant

has either been allocated an interview at a preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted.

Applications will be assessed again after interviews according to the selection rules of each preferenced school.

Interview scores will be standardised and used by all participating schools (except the University of Queensland).

GEMSAS will assess the competitiveness of all interviewed applicants for their first preference medical school. If the

applicant is not ranked highly enough he or she will be assessed for the second preference school and so on until the

applicant has either been offered a place at a preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted.

You cannot be considered for an offer at a school which is a higher preference than the school at which you were

interviewed. They have already decided you don't meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough

to get an interview offer and that can't change in the subsequent offer round despite how well you do at interview.

Once an application is submitted NO FURTHER changes can be made.

How do I choose between two valid GAMSAT results?

You will have two valid GAMSAT results if you sat two separate GAMSAT tests - for example the Australian GAMSAT2

in 2015 and 2016. You are advised to compare both results against the acceptable scores for each university and then

select the result you wish the universities to consider.

Simply record in the Application Form the appropriate candidate identification number, country and year of sitting for

the test you wish to use for selection. This will be the only GAMSAT result that will be provided to GEMSAS.

It is not possible to mix individual Section scores from different years or to use different tests for different universities.

Will the UK or Ireland GAMSAT scores be acceptable for entry to GAMSAT Consortium medical schools?

The Ireland and UK GAMSATs are treated the same as the Australian GAMSAT. The UK GAMSAT is valid for application

in the year following the test. There is a very helpful table on the GAMSAT website that shows the validity of all the

Which school should I apply to?

There are nine Medical Schools in the GAMSAT Consortium. Domestic applicants may nominate up to six preferences.

Please take into consideration the special character of each medical school and choose as preferences those schools

whose philosophies, location and special character best matches your requirements.

There are significant differences in entry requirements between the schools. You might find that you have a much

better chance of gaining admission to one school over another. Please ensure you make your selections with care.

Once preferences are entered and your application submitted, you will not be able to change them. Subsequent

transfers between Schools are unlikely to be approved.

If you are not prepared to undertake the course at a particular university you should not list it.

You are advised to put only medical schools and types of places that you are prepared to accept. You are strongly

advised to obtain detailed information from the schools’ websites to ensure you are fully informed on both the

admissions criteria and the structure of the individual programs. If you are offered a place and you decline it, or if you

allow your offer to lapse, then your application will be withdrawn from further processing and you will NOT receive

another offer. There is no requirement to list the full six preferences available to you.

I want to know about indicating the types of places I would be prepared to accept and ranking them in order?

may accept one change of preference per application year should you wish to add or remove the Full Fee-paying

preference. No other offer type changes will be considered. Changes must be made in writing directly with the

Institution on or before 4pm AEST for NSW and 4pm AWST for WA 4 October of the application year. See the Schools’

pages in this guide for details.

My degree is more than 10 years old, am I still eligible to apply?

Bachelor degrees that were awarded more than 10 years prior to the anticipated commencement date may not be

acceptable at the school to which you are applying. Most schools accept postgraduate study within the last 10 years

as reason to waive this rule. They will then calculate the GPA on the prior bachelor degree. Some schools do accept

Postgraduate study either for calculation of the GPA or to meet their GPA hurdle.

To confirm whether your degree will be recognised, check the relevant schools’ entries in this Guide and their websites

and contact the schools if you are still in doubt.

The pre-requisite subjects required for entry to the University of Melbourne must be completed within 10 years of

commencing the MD.

Which degree will you use to calculate my GPA (the Key Degree)?

We will generally use the GPA from the most recently completed qualifying degree and this may include a degree you

will complete in the year in which you apply, except for UWA who consider the most recent three years EFT of valid

study (see school website for details on what study is included). See the schools’ entries in this Guide for more details.

What is the definition of an Honours Year, which is considered by GEMSAS?

You can ask yourself could you have completed the bachelor degree and done that honours year at another

university? If so, then it's standalone. If not it's embedded. Standalone Honours are used as the Final GPA year along

with the last two years of the preceding bachelor degree. With embedded Honours, it's just the most recent three

years of the degree that's used.

Exception: UQ please see their school entry for more information.

I have done (or I am completing) an Honours Year. Will this be used for selection?

We include Honours results in GPA calculations, however this can become problematic where the Honours year isn't

complete. Typically Honours results are only available at the end of the Honours year and we do a GPA calculation for

allocating applicants to interviews in the middle of the year. So you would probably have a GPA calculated on your

bachelor degree used for getting an interview and then when the Honours results are available, they would be used

to confirm any conditional or provisional offer you may have been made. However, if you do have results for Honours

from semester 1, these may be used in your GPA calculation together with results from the last two years of your

bachelor degree.

Except: The University of Melbourne, if an Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application, it

will not be used.

For UWA, if an Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application, it will not be used except to

confirm any conditional or provisional offer you may have been made.

Check the relevant schools’ entries in this Guide and their websites to determine if your current honours will be used

in the calculation.

Will my Honours subject results or the overall Honours grade be used in my GPA calculation?

Where an Honours year is eligible to be included; if your Honours year consists of subjects which have results then

these will be used to calculate your GPA. If there are no subject results, and only an overall Honours grade, then that

will be used (refer to the GPA Conversion Table). If both subject results and an overall Honours grade are available,

the best GPA will be used. The exception is Griffith which will use the overall Honours grade even if there are individual

subject results.

How do I allocate subjects to years to calculate my GPA?

First, read the documents at www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations.

The way to calculate your GPA is to take the total credit points and divide by the years normally taken to do the degree.

This will give you the number of credit points to allocate to each GPA year3.

Example: Assume that all the units you did were of equal credit point value.

If you did 24 units in a 3-year degree you would allocate 8 units a year.

Working backwards chronologically take the most recently-completed 8 units and allocate them to the Final GPA Year.

Then take the next 8 units and allocate them to the Final-minus-1 GPA Year and the remaining 8 units will be the Final-

minus-2 GPA Year.

How are subjects allocated to the three GPA years?

We allocate by the year in which subjects were taken and not the level of the subjects. We use full-time equivalent

(FTE) study loads to allocate subjects to GPA years so we can take part-time, overloading and subjects of differing

credit point values into consideration.

Who uses postgraduate study?

Only four schools use postgraduate study in GPA calculations –

UWA who use the most recent three years EFT of results regardless of whether they are complete (except

honours which must be complete). Please see school entry for a list of the type of study included in the GPA.

UQ who accept completed postgraduate degrees (Graduate Diplomas, Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and

PhDs) as standalone key degrees.

Griffith will calculate a GPA including a Masters by coursework if this degree has been completed at the time

of Application. Griffith will also allocate an overall GPA of 7:00 for completed PhD’s and a 7:00 for each full

time year of a completed Masters by Research.

ANU may include Masters by coursework results in the three-year GPA calculation.

Please see the “Entry requirements – All applicants” section for more detailed information.

All other schools use the most recently-completed undergraduate degree only in GPA calculations.

I’ve done a postgraduate degree, do I calculate my GPA on that or on my undergraduate degree?

In general, postgraduate qualifications such as Masters, PhDs, or postgraduate diplomas, are not included in GPA

calculations and selection is based on the performance in the most recent undergraduate degree only, including an

Honours year if applicable. However, because schools do have different rules surrounding the use of these

qualifications you should read the school entries in this Guide or contact your preferred schools directly for advice.

Some exceptions: Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate diploma, Masters and PhD results are used for the GPA calculation

for admission to the University of Queensland (where these awards are deemed to be the ‘key degree’). See UQ’s

school entry in this Guide for further information.

For The University of Western Australia, Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework are

included in a 3-year GPA calculation. Applicants with a completed Masters by research will be awarded a 0.2 bonus

to their overall GPA. Applicants with completed PhDs will be deemed a GPA of 7.0.

Griffith University will award a GPA of 7.00 for each equivalent full time year taken to complete a Research Masters

(the remainder of the GPA will be taken from your most recently completed Bachelor degree) and an overall GPA of

7:00 for PhDs.

ANU will award a bonus of 4% for successful and complete PhD studies at the time of application. Masters by research

or honours will attract a 2% bonus. Masters by course work will not attract any bonus but may be included in the 3-

year GPA calculation.

I was interviewed at School X (my 3rd preference) and I did really well in the interview but I would rather be offered

a place at School Y (my first preference), is that possible?

You cannot be considered for an offer at a school above the preference of the school at which you were interviewed.

They have already decided that either you don't meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough

to get an interview offer. That status can't change in the subsequent offer rounds despite how well you perform at

interview.

What is the standardisation of interview scores?

The standardisation of interview scores ensures comparability between institutions. This is a statistical process which

uses means and standard deviations from the different interview score distributions to put all the sets of scores onto

the same scale.

What happens to my application after interview?

If you are not made an offer by the School at which you were interviewed, your application will remain in the system

and will automatically be considered by your lower preference Schools (at which you are eligible for consideration) or

by the School at which you were interviewed (for a later offer) until you are either offered a place or all preferences

have been exhausted. If you are interviewed by your final preference School, your application cannot be considered

by any lower preference School.

Can I get my interview score or ranking data?

GEMSAS is not able to provide any ranking data or interview scores. Many factors impact on who gets an offer and

apart from the selection components used, there are also factors at play including your willingness to accept bonded

or fee places, whether you are a rural or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicant and whether or not you were

eligible for bonuses or for special sub-quota places.

How are offers released?

All offers are decided on the same day and unsuccessful applicants are notified by email that day. Most medical schools

advise successful applicants by email but for some medical schools offers are complex to generate, so these

notifications may take a few days to reach you. Not receiving an email from GEMSAS usually means good news! Please

make sure you have listed [email protected] as a ‘trusted sender’ in your email system.

How many offers will I receive?

Applicants are made only one offer each year. Once you have been made an offer, you are not eligible for subsequent

round offers. If you decline your offer you are removed from the applicant pool and can apply again next year.

What is a conditional offer?

If you are made an offer of a place, and you have not completed your degree (or pre-requisites for the University of

Melbourne or you are undertaking additional bachelor or postgraduate studies for UWA), then the offer will be

conditional. When we get your final results we will calculate your final GPA and check that it meets any conditions the

school may have put on your offer (e.g. maintaining a stated GPA). If it does, your offer will be confirmed, and if it

doesn't meet the conditions the offer will be withdrawn. Applicants enrolled in a combined degree and who receive

a conditional offer for a place at the University of Melbourne must complete both awards in order to have their offer

confirmed. If you studied at an ARTS university we will try to get your final results and confirmation of completion of

If you studied at a non-ARTS university you will need to send an original transcript showing final results and evidence

of completion of your degree.

I had better GPA and GAMSAT scores than a friend and they were offered a place at X University. Why wasn’t I

offered a place?

Selection is very complex and many factors impact on whether or not you will get an offer. There are many reasons

why an applicant with the same or worse GPA and GAMSAT scores as you may have been offered a place when you

were not.

They may have done considerably better than you in the interview and/or portfolio or personal statements

They may have come from a rural background.

They may be of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island descent

If you decline an offer of a place, you will not be considered for another place or receive another offer.

If you do not receive an offer of a place in the main round of offers after interview, your application will remain in the

system. Additional offers may be made during December and January after final results of applicants completing their

qualifying degree are known.

It is NOT possible for applicants to change their preferences after the application closing date.

There are many applicants for medical school places who will not be offered an interview or a place. If you have been

offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place,

then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GAMSAT Consortium courses as

Complete the online application form To apply for admission to a course commencing in 2017, you must complete and submit the online Application Form

– on the GEMSAS website – by no later than 11.59pm AEST Tuesday 31st May 2016. Please do not leave submission

until the last minute as many others will also do this and system overloading can impact your ability to meet the

deadline.

Late applications will NOT be accepted.

The application fee is paid by credit card, when completing the online application form. You do not need to complete

your payment at the time of submission, but must do so by 5pm AEST 4th June.

In 2016, for 2017 entry, the application fee is AUD$191.

Don’t forget to include [email protected] as a trusted email address, to ensure messages from the GEMSAS team

are not treated as spam and sent to your Junk folder. We cannot be held responsible for any email not reaching or

not being read by you.

FAQs about completing your application I didn’t receive confirmation of my submitted information or my payment

After completing the Application Form you will need to SUBMIT your application. You will then be taken to the Deakin

University payment system to make your payment. Once your payment has been made successfully you will be shown

a receipt screen. Please note your receipt number or print this screen for your records. If you are not able to complete

these steps, please email [email protected].

You will not receive an email from GEMSAS confirming your application has been submitted; you will receive a receipt

number once payment has been made and this is confirmation that your application has been successfully submitted.

I have previously applied through GEMSAS

If you have previously applied through GEMSAS, you are still required to send in ALL documentation and for the online

application you will need to register again.

Do I need to pay for each medical school preference?

You pay a single fee of $191 and this covers up to six preferences.

I can’t see my coversheets for submitting supporting documentation

As your application progresses, a menu item “Coversheets” will appear on the left of your screen. This will allow you

to save and print your coversheets for submission of supporting documentation (if required). Coversheets are

generated according to your selections and responses. If you are unsure if you should supply supporting

documentation, please check pages 7-11 of this guide.

If you cannot save or print any of the documents mentioned above, please email [email protected].

Do I still need to post the Education coversheet if I have no supporting documentation?

The Education coversheet will only be generated if you have selected a university that does not participate in ARTS,

for ANY of your study. The Education coversheet will not be generated if no original transcripts are required to be

sent in.

I don’t have an original transcript; can I submit a certified copy?

No, only original transcripts may be supplied where these are required. Scanned or photocopied transcripts, including

certified copies, are not acceptable.

A statement of results is not acceptable and is not considered in place of a full transcript, nor is a printout of an

academic record.

I’m still studying this year; do I need to submit a 2016 transcript?

Applicants completing their qualifying degree in 2016 will be assessed on the basis of the information available at

the time of application. Semester 1 (or Trimester 1), 2016 results will be included in the assessment for interview if

they are available at the time of assessment.

For the University of Melbourne, Semester 1 results will not be used in the provisional GPA if they do not

equate to at least 0.375 EFTS Load in that semester. If an Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in

the year of application, it will not be used

Applicants completing their degree in 2016 will only be offered an interview if the GPA at the time of application (with

2016 results to date) meets the required level.

Such applicants should also note that while decisions on interview offers will be made on the basis of results available

at the time of application, final 2016 results may be used to determine offers of a place. Refer to each school’s entry

in this Guide for more information.

Exchange studies and transcripts

Exchange studies are part of your degree and therefore we use the results from those studies in calculating your GPA.

Exchange studies may appear on your home university transcript as pass/fail subjects, but we use your actual results

to calculate your GPA.

You must obtain and supply an original transcript for any exchange studies you have done.

Exception: The University of Western Australia will normally use the results that appear on the home university’s

transcript (in most cases this is an ungraded pass or an ungraded fail). Please see the Faculty website for further

information and for exceptions to this general rule.

I have lodged through GEMSAS two or more applications for medicine

Only your first submitted application will be processed, regardless of which application has been paid for.

How do I submit portfolios for The University of Notre Dame, Australia and the University of Wollongong?

Portfolios are completed in the application form and submitted once you submit your application. To avoid any

potential loss of data due to session closure, we suggest you complete your portfolio offline in the first instance and

copy it into the live online application once you are satisfied with your work. As character count methods differ

between programs you will need to check your online portfolio using the review of responses generated PDF. If your

portfolio was not copied in its entirety you may need to do some further online editing to reduce the character

count.

How do I know if my supporting documents have arrived?

It is strongly recommended that you use a postal service which provides a tracking mechanism (Registered Post,

Express Post, courier, etc.), so that you can be certain your supporting documents have arrived at GEMSAS.

You may wish to include a reply paid envelope with your supporting documents. This will be returned to you when

your documents are processed as confirmation that they have been received. Note that unless you also provide a

letter requesting the return of the documents, this envelope will be returned to you empty.

Bachelor Degree/ GPA Applicants should have a minimum weighted GPA of 5.6 to be considered for interview. The weighted GPA is calculated from the last three full-time-equivalent years of the most recently completed Bachelor degree. ANU will include Masters by coursework results in the three-year GPA calculation if the program is complete or due to be complete by the 31st of December in the year of application. Honours results will be included in the GPA calculation only if Semester 1 2016 results are available. Successive years are weighted x1, x2, and x3 so that the greatest weight is applied to the most recent results. Applicants completing their Bachelor degree at the time of application must have at least 0.375 FTE of results at the end of Semester 1 2016, for the results to be used in the GPA-Final calculation. Two-year accelerated Bachelor degrees will be accepted but must be complete at the time of application. The ANU Medical School does not accept 1-year conversion degrees or 2-year degrees.

Bachelor Degree/ GPA A minimum weighted GPA of 5.0 is required. The GPA is to be based on academic grades obtained during the final three full-time equivalent years of the most recent undergraduate degree (including an Honours year if applicable). Years are progressively weighted x1, x2 and x3, to give greater weight to the most recent results. The completed undergraduate degree must be from an Australian university or a Higher Education Institution recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework, or a recognised Bachelor qualification listed in the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) Guide. Deakin does not recognise 2 year bachelor degrees or 1 year conversion degrees for the purposes of admission to the medical course. Prior clinical experience in a health discipline: Applicants who have completed one year (12 months) of Full-Time clinical practice as a registered health professional, receive a 2% bonus. The following health disciplines will attract a 2% bonus: chiropractic, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, dietetics, speech pathology, paramedics, and practitioners of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Chinese Medicine and Medical Radiation. Please note that the health disciplines listed here are the only health disciplines which have been approved by the School of Medicine Admission and Selection Committee for the 2016-17 selection round. No other health disciplines are eligible to receive the clinical experience in a health discipline bonus. Please also note the following:

Offers The final ranked list, from which offers will be progressively made, is based on an entry score calculation which gives equal weighting to GPA, GAMSAT and Interview. Currency of qualification The key degree must have been completed within 10 years of the projected commencement date. Applicants whose key degree was completed outside the 10 year period are considered for admission if they have completed, with a passing Grade Average, the equivalent of 1 year’s full time tertiary level studies within the past 10 years. This study does not need to be a completed program of study as long as the duration is equivalent to one year or more full time. The 10 years is calculated from when you completed your degree not your Graduation date.

GAMSAT Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 50 in each GAMSAT section. As a result of using a 50/50 - GPA/GAMSAT selections methodology there is no discrete cut-off point for GAMSAT.

Rural Applicants Griffith University Rural Priority Access Scheme:

From 2017, 25% of the Griffith University medical intake will be required to be from a rural background RA2-5. Therefore, applicants who meet these criteria will be given priority access to Griffith University selection interviews (GUMSAA).

International students Griffith University will be accepting applications from international students for 2017 entry. There are a total of 25 International places available including those reserved for international students transitioning from the B. Medical Science pathways program. Interview The interview or Griffith University Multiple Station Admissions Assessment (GUMSAA) is designed to assess personal qualities deemed desirable in medical students and medical practitioners and will take the form of scenario based, multi-station interviews. Applicants will be invited to GUMSAA based on an interview selections rank score derived from a 50/50 combination of GPA (unweighted) and overall GAMSAT score. GUMSAA for 2017 entry is scheduled to be held on Wednesday September 28th 2016. Offers Offers are made based on an overall ranking of interviewed applicants. This ranking is calculated as 50% each of the interview selections rank (based on the combined GPA/GAMSAT score) and the overall Interview score. The first round of offers will be made in early November and if required, ‘top up’ offers will be made in subsequent offer rounds. Extended Rural Cohort (ERC) stream

27 (ERC places are allocated from the domestic quotas above; they are not additional places) Students enrolled in the ERC stream will be allocated to the Rural Clinical School Zone where they will be based for all of years 2 and 3 of the course and half of year 4. ERC students will undertake a significant portion of their clinical education in hospitals and community-based practices within the Northern Victoria Regional Medical Education Network. This network brings together the clinical resources of Monash University and The University of Melbourne in northern Victoria. Preference will be given to applicants who express a particular interest in the program. However, any domestic applicant may be offered an ERC place. Clinical School Zone Allocation The University of Melbourne has 7 clinical schools where MD students will spend the bulk of the clinical years of the course. Bachelor Degree/ GPA/ GAMSAT A minimum GPA of 5.0 is required to be considered for interview. It should be noted that this is a minimum. Entry is highly competitive and applicants with a GPA below 5.5 have rarely been admitted to the MD. A minimum GAMSAT Average Score of 50 (with a minimum of 50 in each of the three sections) is required to be considered for interview. Applicants are ranked for interview based on the weighted GPA and the GAMSAT score (where each of the three sections is weighted equally) to provide a ranked list of applicants for selection. Domestic applicants who were successful in gaining an interview for 2016 entry averaged a GAMSAT score of 68 and an average GPA of 6.7. The Grade Point Average (GPA) is measured by considering the last 3 years of the applicant’s undergraduate coursework studies (only including Honours where the Honours Degree is completed by the end of semester one in the year of application, and the results are available for selection).

If an Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application, then weightings will be applied by weighting the first of the final three pre-honours undergraduate years by 1, the second year by 2 and the final year by 3. An undergraduate degree is defined as a degree of at least three years duration when studied full-time, or equivalent, from a recognised university. Therefore, 2 year bachelor degrees or 1 year conversion degrees are not recognised for the purposes of admission to the medical course.

Currency of qualification Undergraduate degree must have been completed within 10 years of commencing the Doctor of Medicine. The stations could include practical tasks, answering questions, commenting on short films, and explaining your thinking. Conditional Offers If you are made an offer of a place, and you have not completed your degree, or pre-requisite subjects, then the offer will be conditional. When we get your final results we will calculate your final GPA. You will be expected to maintain the GPA used when shortlisted for interview. If you don’t meet the conditions by the specified date your offer will be withdrawn. Applicants enrolled in a combined degree must complete both awards in order to have their offer confirmed.

Change of Fee-Type Preferences No fee-type changes whatsoever will be allowed for Commonwealth Support (bonded or non-bonded) places. The only request for a change of fee-type that may be considered is a request to add or remove the ‘Full-Fee’ category. For example, if you have listed that you will accept a Full- Fee place but your circumstances have now changed so that you would not be in a financial position to accept such a place, you may remove this fee-type from your preferences. Bachelor Degree/ GPA Calculation

Applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of a three year full-time equivalent (FTE) undergraduate degree (including an Honours year if applicable). Other qualifications will not be considered eligible unless specified below. GPAs are calculated on the most recently completed undergraduate degree including Honours year where applicable. Postgraduate qualifications are not included in GPA calculations. GPA years will be progressively weighted Final-minus-2 x 1, Final-minus-1 x 2 and Final x 3, to give greatest weight to the most recent results. Applicants who have completed degrees of more than 3 years in duration should only use the units which comprise the last 3 FTE years of study. 2 year degrees - 2 year full-time fast-tracked degrees which offer three trimesters per annum as

opposed to two semesters (equivalent to 3 years FTE), will be accepted subject to completion at a Commonwealth accredited institution.

- A completed 2 year FTE undergraduate degree will be accepted as the qualifying degree where the applicant has previously completed a 3 year FTE undergraduate degree. Where a 2 year FTE undergraduate degree has been completed after the completion of a 3 year FTE undergraduate degree, the GPA years will be progressively weighted Final-minus-2 x1, Final-minus-1 x2.

- Notre Dame Fremantle does not recognise two year Bachelor degrees or one year conversion degrees for the purpose of admission to the Doctor of Medicine, unless outlined above.

Applicants in their final year of study - Applicants who apply using their current enrolled undergraduate degree will be

expected to successfully complete all requirements of the degree as at 31 December 2016. Deferred or supplementary exams required in order to fulfil degree completion requirements and which are scheduled post 31 December 2016, will be deemed not to have met minimum completion requirements. As such, applicants must give detailed consideration to the stipulated deadlines if and when requesting deferred or supplementary exams. Currency of qualification Applicants are required to have completed their qualifying undergraduate degree within 10 years of 31 July 2016. The only exception to this is if within 10 years of 31 July 2016 they have successfully completed the equivalent of one year’s full-time tertiary studies at Bachelor level or higher as defined by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) or for international qualifications, defined by the Australian Department of Education and Training Qualifications Recognition Policy Unit (previously AEI-NOOSR).

Rural applicants A number of Australian medical students, equivalent to at least 25% of the University’s Commonwealth-supported medical student allocation, must come from a rural background as defined by the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) Programme 2016 - 2018. Bonus points may be allocated within the Notre Dame Portfolio to applicants who are identified as coming from a rural background. In 2015, UQ replaced the MBBS program with the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. The MD program is a 4 year extended Masters award that is available as a Commonwealth Supported Program for domestic students.

Bachelor Degree/ GPA Applicants must have achieved a minimum converted GPA of 5.0 in their most recent key degree. A key degree means the most recently completed Bachelor degree awarded by an accredited Australian institution (or overseas equivalent). Where an applicant has completed an approved Honours award, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters or Doctoral degree after completion of a Bachelor degree, the most recent of these will be used as the key degree. A Bachelor level key degree must have a minimum standard duration of six semesters of full time study. Bachelor degrees which have a standard duration of less than six semesters of full time study will not be considered in UQ’s assessment process. Postgraduate degrees will only be accepted as a subsequent key degree where an applicant has previously completed a Bachelor degree of the required minimum standard duration. Where the key degree is a Bachelor degree, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma or Masters (by coursework) the GPA is calculated over the entire duration of the degree, and is not divided into years. All subjects studied while enrolled in the key degree program are included in the calculation, whether or not they counted towards the award of the degree. Any other study for which credit was given towards the degree must be included. Where the degree was completed as part of a combined, dual or parallel degree program, all subjects studied towards both degrees are included in the calculation of the GPA. Letter grades are used in all GPA calculations by the University of Queensland. Percentages are only used when letter grades are unavailable. PhD and Masters (by research) receive a converted GPA of 7.0. Honours (by research) receive a GPA as per the Honours category in the conversion table on page 72. The GPA for Bachelor degrees with embedded or ‘on-course Honours’ (typically 4 or 5 year degrees) may be calculated using whichever method gives the highest result. That is, either GPA calculation based on the coursework, or from the Honours category. GPA calculations are often incomplete at the time of offers. Applicants are advised not to include a UQ preference if their GPA does not or will not meet the required minimum. Current study assessments UQ will only consider a current study assessment where all of the following conditions apply: 1) The applicant is currently completing their first key degree or they don’t already have a GPA of 5.0 or better in their most recently completed key degree, and 2) Some finalised grades are available for the current key degree program, and 3) The progressive GPA of the current study is above 5.0, and 4) It is possible for the applicant to complete the current key degree before 31 December in the year of application. If one or more of these conditions are not met, a current study assessment will not be considered by UQ unless the current study is being undertaken by research. In this scenario, a GPA of 5.0 will be nominally awarded to keep the applicant active in the selection pool. Any offer made based on a current study assessment will require completion of the qualifying key degree prior to 31 December in the year of application with the required minimum overall GPA of 5.0. If either the completion requirement or the GPA requirement are not met, the conditional offer will be rescinded and the applicant’s place in the program will be cancelled.

Currency of qualification Applicants whose key degree was completed more than 10 years prior to commencement in the MD may be considered if they have successfully completed the equivalent of at least one full semester (i.e. 0.50 FTE) of postgraduate coursework study in the recent 10 year period. The reactivation study must be graded and it must be completed at Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma or coursework Master level.

GAMSAT Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 50 in each section. Applicants with any section score below 50 are deemed ineligible.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Applicants

Applicants who are from an ATSI background are required to submit their application directly to UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit for consideration under a separate selection process which involves short listing and interview. Short listed applicants must be able to provide documented proof of their ATSI status at their interview. Please contact the ATSIS Unit ([email protected]) for more information. The GAMSAT exam is not compulsory for ATSI applicants at UQ. However, it is recommended that ATSI applicants who choose to undertake the GAMSAT exam should also apply through GEMSAS and include UQ in their preference list in addition to undertaking the alternative process which is administered by the ATSIS Unit. ATSI background applicants who choose not to sit the GAMSAT exam should not apply through GEMSAS. It is important to note that if an ATSI background student applies directly to UQ and also chooses to lodge a separate GEMSAS application but doesn’t include UQ in their preference list, UQ will be considered to be their preference number 7.

Rural entry In accordance with Government legislation, The University of Queensland will offer 25% of places to students from a rural background. Students will be eligible for consideration in the Rural Background Students (RBS) sub quota if they have spent at least 5 years continuously, or 10 years cumulatively, living in a rural Australian area as determined by the ASGC-RA (Australian Standard Geographical Classification - Remoteness Area) system. As approved rural background applicants compete for places within a sub quota, the GAMSAT cut-off may be lower for this cohort.

All other standard selection policies and procedures still apply. However, UQ awards two bonus points to the overall GAMSAT score to assist rural background applicants in being more competitive for non-bonded places. Applicants who wish to be considered through this scheme will need to provide documentary evidence to GEMSAS as detailed on page 16 of the GEMSAS Guide and the GEMSAS website.

Interview UQ does not interview applicants for graduate entry Medicine. The only exception is for ATSI background applicants (see above for information).

Clinical Preferences All students commencing the MD program in 2017 will be assigned to the St Lucia campus for their first two years of study (Phase 1). Students will be able to nominate their preferred clinical location. However, nominating a clinical preference doesn’t guarantee placement at that site. Clinical placements will be allocated by the School of Medicine according to the available places.

Offers UQ’s major offer round is released in August/September of each year. Applicants will be ranked in order of merit by their GAMSAT Overall Score, and offers will be made accordingly. Applicants within the same GAMSAT Overall Score band will be differentiated by the GPA from the most recently completed key degree. The lowest entry scores are normally derived from the first round of offers. Applicants are advised that the required entry scores for subsequent offer rounds are often higher than those of the first round of offers. Quotas are filled in the order of non-bonded CSP, then bonded CSP (known as BMP). Rural Background (RBS) places will be filled from both bonded and non-bonded places. Offers made to applicants in the final year of their qualifying key degree will be conditional upon the completion of their current degree before 31 December in the year of offer with a GPA of 5.0 or better.

Other Requirements By program commencement, students will need to have:

Completed a schedule of immunisations;

Obtained a current Apply First Aid certificate;

Provided evidence of status with respect to blood-borne viruses

Obtained a Working with Children (‘Blue Card’) clearance; and.

Criminal History Check (requirement to be confirmed)

Deferrals The deferment rules for the MD program are currently under review. If you are successful in gaining an offer to study at UQ and you have experienced an unexpected life event (after lodging your application) that will delay your commencement of study, please contact UQ Admissions to discuss your options. If you expect to be requesting deferment prior to lodging your GEMSAS application, it is highly recommended that you consider applying for a future intake instead.

Minimal results in the current year of study: Where an applicant has 0.25 FTE (or less) of results for their final GPA year at the end of semester 1, 2016, the Faculty will include older study, where available. Where no older study is available, the Faculty will calculate the GPA on only the “GPA Final-1” and “GPA Final-2” years. In this instance, if an applicant is made an offer, it will be conditional upon their performance in all units in 2016 (see section below about conditional offers). Applicants with completed PhDs: Applicants who have completed a PhD (from a recognised Institution) by the time of application will be awarded/deemed a GPA of 7.0. Applicants with completed Masters by Research: Completed Masters by research qualifications are not included in the GPA calculation. Instead the Faculty will add a small bonus of 0.2 to the overall GPA for applicants who have completed this qualification at time of application. UWA admitted its first applicants into the 4-year DMD and 3-year DPM courses in 2013.

Selection for the DMD is based on suitable GAMSAT (or MCAT for international applicants), a minimum GPA of 5.5 and interview.

Shortlisted applicants to the DMD will also be required to sit a manual dexterity test and a spatial awareness test at time of

interview.

Selection for the DPM is based on suitable GAMSAT (or MCAT for international applicants) and a minimum GPA of 5.0 (there is no

The UOW Doctor of Medicine (MD)

The UOW Doctor of Medicine (MD) program aims to lead development and implementation of strategies that effectively address the shortage of medical practitioners in regional, rural and remote Australia. The Graduate School of Medicine’s (GSM) curriculum reflects the latest approach to medical education and incorporates extensive use of medical education and information technologies. The program is based on the best educational evidence from medical schools around the world. It features an innovative, integrated spiral curriculum which revolves around a case based learning core. The GSM benefits from purpose built facilities, featuring dedicated teaching and resource spaces. The GSM also features Simulation Centres where the students are exposed to a combination of modern technology and traditional bedside clinical teaching, with the help of Simulated Patients, to develop their skills in diagnosis and management of a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Clinical exposure occurs early in the program, with students being allocated to hospitals, primary care settings and community health centres from their first semester of study. Students spend significant time during their training undertaking both short and long term clinical placements in many regional and rural locations. These attachments allow students to gain insight into life in regional, rural and remote communities and to gain an insight into the challenges and rewards that come with practicing medicine in these settings. Students will receive a broad based education with a focus on rural medicine, graduating with the skills and ability to practice in any geographic setting and to commence training in any specialty.

Places Available in 2017: Approximately 82-86 places will be available, including up to 14 places for international students. Students will be placed at either Wollongong campus or Shoalhaven campus for the first 18 months of the program (Phase 1). Students may complete placement outside of these areas during Phase 1.

Bachelor Degree/ GPA All applicants must have completed, or be in their final year of study at time of application, an undergraduate degree consisting of at least three years duration when studied full-time, or equivalent (FTE). The undergraduate degree must be from an Australian university or a Higher Education Institution recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework, or an equivalent overseas Bachelor qualification from an institution that is recognised under the framework and guidelines set by the Australian Department of Education and Training Qualifications Recognition Policy Unit (previously AEI-NOOSR). Applicants must have a weighted GPA of greater than 5.0 on a 7 point scale or 2.8 on a 4 point scale at the time of interview selection to be eligible to apply. The GPA score required to receive an offer for interview may fluctuate annually. This GPA will be calculated based on the most recently completed Bachelor degree (including an Honours year if applicable). Postgraduate qualifications are not included in GPA calculations.

GPA years will be progressively weighted Final-minus-2 x 1, Final-minus-1 x 2 and Final x 3, and then divided by 6, to give greater weight to the most recent results. Current study in final year GPA calculations must be at least 0.375 FTE to be included, otherwise those results may not count and the GPA will be calculated based on the Final-minus-1 and Final-minus-2 GPA years only. UOW reserves the right to recalculate GPAs at any time before the close of the admissions cycle if required. UOW does not normally recognise two year Bachelor degrees or one year conversion degrees for the purpose of admission to the medical course. Two year FTE (e.g. graduate entry) Bachelor degrees may only be accepted if completed at time of application, and if there has been a three year Bachelor degree completed prior. In this instance, a two year GPA will be calculated for admissions purposes. Applicants who have completed the equivalent of a three year FTE Bachelor degree but have been awarded credit for prior academic learning may be exempt from this rule. However, UOW generally requires applicants to have completed at least two years of full time study within their awarding institution. Please contact the GSM for more information. Accelerated Bachelor degrees are accepted by UOW; that is, a degree consisting of three full time trimesters per year for two years from a recognised institution. Combined Bachelor/Masters degrees must have all program requirements completed for the qualification to be accepted for admissions purposes by 31st December 2015. This qualification must have a minimum length of three years FTE, with at least two years FTE of Bachelor level study. Where the Bachelor level units are identifiable, this will be the basis for the GPA calculation. If the Bachelor level units cannot be ascertained, all units from the final three years will be included.

Currency of qualification Applicants are required to have graduated from their undergraduate degree within ten years of the closing date of applications. Applicants whose undergraduate degree was completed outside the ten year period may still be considered for admission if they have completed the equivalent of one year full-time tertiary study at Graduate Diploma level or higher at a recognised university within the last ten years. If no postgraduate study has been completed in the last ten years, applicants can apply for a waiver of this rule if they can demonstrate through other activities that they hold current high level academic skills. To request a waiver, applicants need to provide a copy of their university transcripts, CV, and any other documentation in support of their request to [email protected]. This should be submitted prior to the closing date of applications to ensure that academic currency has been deemed suitable to continue your application to UOW. Applicants who are required to be assessed for academic currency due to the ten year rule will be deemed ineligible for consideration of an interview and place at UOW for 2017 entry if:

- An applicant submits a waiver request that is not approved by the UOW Admissions Executive.

- An applicant does not submit a waiver request at all.

If a waiver request is submitted and not approved after the closing date of applications, no changes to preferences can be made at this time. If a waiver request is submitted close to the application closing date, UOW cannot guarantee that it will be processed before applications close.

GAMSAT and Portfolio A minimum GAMSAT Overall Score of 50 with a minimum of 50 in each of the three Sections is required to be considered for interview. The GEMSAS application form also incorporates the GSM Admissions Portfolio which must be completed by all applicants. The portfolio, application and rural residency forms should be submitted electronically directly to GEMSAS and will be used as one of the criteria to rank your eligibility for interview. This information must be submitted regardless of UOW ranking on your preference form as applicants who fail to submit a portfolio will not be considered. The GSM Admissions Portfolio may take time to complete and it is recommended that applicants commence preparation early and submit well prior to the closing date. This is demonstrated through a commitment to training Indigenous doctors by providing a range of support mechanisms for applicants who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. A dedicated selection process is available for Indigenous applicants. For further information on this, please contact the GSM. To be considered for these places when applying via GEMSAS, applicants must indicate their Indigenous status at the time of application. Applicants will be contacted by the GSM to supply relevant supporting documentation. Applicants in this category are required to reach acceptable levels of performance in GAMSAT, interview and GPA as determined by the school. A panel interview with the Academic Leader: Admissions and Selection, Academic Leader: Indigenous Health and a representative from the community may be required.

The UOW GSM uses the rural residency/schooling part of the application to assess your background as far as living and studying in rural and regional areas. The information on your form is assessed and scored using the Australian Standard Geographical Classification - Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA). GSM will require rurality verification of your schooling and residential address details as outlined in your Admissions Portfolio. Rurality supporting documentation must be submitted directly to GEMSAS as per the instructions outlined in this guide.

Campus and place type preference

At the time of application applicants will need to indicate their preferred campus (Wollongong or Shoalhaven) for the first 18 months of the program. This preference will be considered but not guaranteed. Extenuating circumstances for campus preference may be considered. Applicants will be contacted by the GSM to supply relevant supporting documentation if required. Applicants must also indicate their place type preferences at time of application, in the order they would most like to be offered. UOW offers CSP and BMP places. There are no Fee paying places available. Campus and place type preferences have no influence on the decision for offer.

Interview Applicants for the UOW MD are ranked for interview using the overall total of their weighted GPA, GAMSAT and Portfolio scores (including rurality). The weighting of each criterion is 30%, 30% and 40% respectively. Approximately 160 applicants will be invited to interview. Domestic interviews are conducted by formally trained interviewers in a multi-station format on both the Wollongong and Shoalhaven Campuses across two weekends in late September 2016. Interviewees are rated on personal qualities including their communication skills, empathetic and ethical approach, reflective manner, teamwork and decision making skills.

Offers On the completion of the interview process, candidates’ interview scores and portfolio scores are used to rank for offer, with equal weighting. GPA and GAMSAT results are not included in the formula after interview. Offers are made in November with a small number of subsequent offers in December and January (if required). Offers are made for a specific status, campus and year only. Offers to UOW GSM may not be deferred. Candidates who do not respond to their official Letter of Offer by the required due date as specified by University will have it rescinded, and the offer may be allocated to the next eligible applicant in a subsequent offer round at the discretion of the University. Offers to successful candidates completing their degree in 2016 will be conditional to their maintenance of the minimum required GPA. Evidence of completion must be produced for the offer to be ratified. Qualifying degrees must be completed by 31st December 2016, unless otherwise approved by the Admissions Executive.

International Applicants International application processes are slightly different and international applications are assessed on a rolling basis from January 2016. International applicants should apply directly

Open Days and Information Sessions

An information evening will be held at Wollongong campus in May 2016 (prior to the close of applications). Students considering UOW GSM will have the opportunity to meet current students and academic staff and to ask questions regarding all aspects of the program offered. Details of the evening will be posted on the UOW GSM website. Applicants who are unable to attend the information evening will have access to the presentations electronically. Interested applicants are also free to contact GSM Admissions to discuss their application if they wish. Applicants are strongly urged to check the UOW website for any changes or updates to any information provided on this form.
