Survival Skills and Ethics (SLHS 649, Spring 2020) This course is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in all disciplines.

It provides information and experiences that aid in successful "survival" during the training years and beyond. Topics include: Effective Speaking, Effective Writing, Authorship, Publication, and Peer Review, Grantspersonship, Teaching / Mentoring, Career Options, Job Application, Interviewing, and Negotiating, Compliance Requirements, and Other Creative Activities. Earn a Responsible Conduct in Research

(RCR) certificate upon course completion. This course also fulfills 3 units of elective credit toward the earning of the following two University of Arizona certificates: Certificate in College Teaching and Certificate in Science Communication.

OFCE Information Session

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad The purpose of the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (FH DDRA) fellowship is to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the U.S. by supporting full-time dissertation research abroad. Research projects must focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia,

the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (including South and Central America). Research in Western Europe and the U.S. and its territories is not supported by this grant. This program is different than the Student

Fulbright.

General Funding Opportunities

Center for Reintegration Scholarships Reintegration is an achievable goal and dreams are possible for those who have been

touched by mental illness. The Center for Reintegration together with the Sidney R. Baer

Jr. Foundation will continue to offer the Baer Reintegration Scholarship for those active

in their recovery. These scholarships are for persons with schizophrenia, schizoaffective

disorder, or bipolar disorder. Applicants must be actively involved in rehabilitative or

reintegrative efforts, such as clubhouse membership, part-time work, volunteer efforts

or school enrollment or in competitive employment.

Chateaubriand Fellowship (France) The Chateaubriand Fellowship is a grant offered by the Embassy of France in the United

States. It supports outstanding Ph.D. students from American universities who wish to

conduct research in France for a period ranging from 4 to 9 months. The Chateaubriand

Fellowship in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Biology-Health for

doctoral students aims to initiate or reinforce collaborations, partnerships or joint

projects between French and American research teams. The Chateaubriand Fellowship

in Humanities and Social Sciences is offered by the Cultural Services of the Embassy of

France. Applicants interested in the Make Our Planet Great initiative should complete

either the STEM or HSS Chateaubriand Fellowship application.

Chemical Heritage Foundation Beckman Center Fellowships (Short-term,

Dissertation, and Postdoc) Fellows come from institutions around the world and study a vast range of topics in the

history and social studies of chemistry and related sciences, technologies, and

industries. Two-Year 80/20 Postdoctoral Fellowships: CHF is pleased to announce the

launch of its new 80/20 postdoctoral fellowship program: these new fellowships reflect

the Beckman Center’s commitment to providing career-launching fellowships for recent

PhDs and its support for the career diversity initiatives of the American Historical

Association and affiliated scholarly societies. The 80/20 postdoctoral fellowship

program will allow the Beckman Center’s postdocs to build skills that can enhance their

opportunities outside the academy or their work within it. Fellows will spend one day a

week working closely with a CHF staff member from the library, museum, and

publications team, Center for Applied History, outreach group, Oral History Program,

archives, or digital library team on developing skills in one of two areas: collections and

curation, or outreach and exhibitions.

Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellowship In keeping with Frederick Douglass’ life of public service and commitment to equity and access, the Frederick Douglass Institutes of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education are offering teaching opportunities to graduate students who are pursuing careers as university faculty and who are entering the final year of terminal degree

and/or doctoral programs. As a Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellow, scholars will teach and/or co-teach during the summer session(s) or full academic year (depending on term of appointment), continue their research, and contribute to the life of the university. Fellows will receive mentorship and professional support from experienced faculty, helping them to prepare for academic careers and job searches. Dates of employment

vary among universities, but typically run during May –August 2020for summer appointments, or August 2020–May 2021for full year appointments. Scholars will be compensated as adjunct faculty, according to the collective bargaining agreement.

Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) for Women from

Developing Countries

MMEG awards education grants on a competitive basis to exceptional women from

developing countries who are enrolled as full-time students for the following academic

financial need and are committed to working for the well-being of women and children

in their home country.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Fellowships for Conservation and Scientific

Research The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers junior- and senior-level fellowships in conservation and scientific research. Junior fellows work closely with Met staff to receive training in scientific research and conservation practices. Senior fellows work on a specific research project that makes use of the Museum's collection and/or resources. The fellowship period is September 1 through August 31.

Research Participation Opportunities at the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Research Participation Programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are educational and training programs designed to provide students and recent graduates opportunities to participate in project-specific CDC research and developmental activities at CDC facilities that are related to CDC’s mission. This program, administered by ORAU

through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointments are at CDC in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as other CDC locations.

Summer Arabic Language and Media (SALAM) Program The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC) is now accepting applications for the 2019

Summer Arabic Language and Media (SALAM) program, a fully-funded competitive

scholarship program to study intensive Arabic in the Sultanate of Oman. The SALAM

scholarship allows students to gain a deeper knowledge of Arabic, while becoming

familiar with Omani history and culture. Program dates: May 29 – July 21, 2020.

Eligibility: All applicants must be U.S. citizens, enrolled in a degree seeking program

(BA, MA or PhD) in Spring 2020, have completed at least four semesters (or the

equivalent) of university-level Arabic coursework, and have a passport that is valid until

6 months after the end date of the program.

Funding Opportunities in the Arts, Humanities,

and Social Sciences

2020 L.A. Times Spring Creative Technologist Internships As a creative technologist intern, you will use your hands-on skills to build prototypes

during a 10-week program at our headquarters in El Segundo, Calif. You will have the opportunity to closely observe the newsroom, understand how news is produced, and team up with other interns to develop proof-of-concept prototypes for future products. Depending on the type of project, interns can expect to create up to three prototypes. You will be asked to present your designs to newsroom stakeholders and the product team at the end of each design cycle. This full-time internship starts on January 20 and

is paid.

2020 L.A. Times Summer Data and Graphics Department Internships

The Los Angeles Times recently merged its Graphics and Data Visualization Department

and Data Desk but will continue to have separate internships in this digital space, with

slightly different roles: one focuses on breaking news, front-end development and print

graphics. The second concentrates on databases and back-end and project development.

There is a single application for both internships with our newly formed Data and

Graphics Department. GRAPHICS/DATA VIZ: Our expanding team is on a mission to

add diverse skills to our storytelling arsenal, including rich JavaScript visualizations,

innovative motion graphics and games — all running on multiple types of devices. And

that’s just the start. We’re also preparing for the future by experimenting in WebGL and

VR. DATA DESK: Within the larger department is a team of reporters and computer

programmers that works with journalists in The Times’ newsroom to collect, organize,

analyze and present large amounts of information. In short, we use data to find and tell

stories.

ABF/AccessLex Institute Doctoral Fellowship Program in Legal & Higher

Education Pending budgetary approval, the American Bar Foundation (ABF), in partnership with AccessLex Institute, is committed to developing the next generation of scholars interested in empirical and interdisciplinary research on legal and higher education. The purpose of the fellowship is to assist emerging scholars who are studying issues of

Carter Manny Award in Architecture and Related Fields Since the Carter Manny Award’s establishment in 1996, over $815,000 has been

awarded in recognition of outstanding doctoral students whose work represents some of the most innovative and advanced scholarship on architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society. The Carter Manny Award supports dissertation research and writing by promising scholars whose projects focus on fields of inquiry supported by the Graham Foundation: architectural history, theory, and criticism; design; engineering;

landscape architecture; urban planning; urban studies; visual arts; and other related fields. The award is intended to assist students enrolled in graduate programs in architecture, art history, the fine arts, humanities, and the social sciences working on architecture topics. The Graham Foundation offers two Carter Manny Awards: a research award for a student at the research stage of the doctoral dissertation and a

writing award for a student at the writing stage of the doctoral dissertation. The research award is acknowledged with $15,000 and the writing award is acknowledged with $20,000

CDC Data Visualization and Evidence Synthesis for Public Health

Recommendations Fellowship A research opportunity is currently available with the Community Interventions for Infection Control Unit (CI-ICU), Division of Global Mitigation and Quarantine (DGMQ),

within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. The participant will be training with CI-ICU on applied epidemiological research, development of public health programs and projects for pandemic influenza planning, preparedness and response as well as evaluation of public health projects,

epidemiological investigations, and literature reviews. This training will include assessing the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of school closures and other non-pharmaceutical interventions; reporting performance measures for science, policy, and communication activities; monitoring dissemination of the non-pharmaceutical guidance for pandemic influenza preparedness and response for state and local health department usage; developing materials used in unit and/or CDC-wide events and

activities for use in public health policy or communication; and collaborating with epidemiologists, health scientists, health communicators, and medical officers.

Collaborative Research – National Endowment for the Humanities The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Research Programs is currently accepting applications for the Collaborative Research program. Collaborative Research grants support groups of two or more scholars seeking to increase humanistic knowledge through research, convenings, and collaborative publication. The program allows projects in a single field of study or those conducting interdisciplinary work.

Projects that include partnerships with researchers from the natural and social sciences are encouraged, but projects must remain firmly rooted in the humanities and must employ humanistic methods.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Graduate Fellowship Program The CHCI’s Graduate Fellowship Program is designed for exceptional emerging Latino leaders who want to immerse themselves in a specific public policy area. This paid, nine-month fellowship will provide you with valuable work experience, access to powerful Latino network, and a chance to showcase your public policy knowledge on Capitol Hill.

With CHCI’s fellowship, you plot your own path through hands-on experience in a variety of public policy areas, which may include: Education, Housing, Health, Law, and STEM (with a focus on energy and the environment). Participants will complete their first-half placement in a congressional office on Capitol Hill and will have the opportunity to pursue a second-half placement that best matches their policy interest.

The range of placements include: congressional offices, committees, federal agencies, the White House, national non-profit advocacy organizations, and government-related institutions. Graduate Fellows will also enhance their professional skills by producing a policy brief and organizing a policy briefing on Capitol Hill.

Folger Institute Research Fellowships The Folger’s extraordinary collections are essential to understanding the humanities and their continued resonance and importance in our world. The Fellowships Program

brings our rare and historic art, books, costumes, manuscripts, periodicals, prints, and visual resources immediately to life. We put scholars, artists, performers, and practitioners into direct and sustained engagement with the collections, with our many innovative digital resources, and with one another. The Folger Institute will offer

research fellowships, in the amount of $3,500, to support four continuous weeks of research and writing away from the Folger.

Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy Doctoral Fellowship The Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy was established in 1997 by Irving Louis Horowitz and Mary E. Curtis as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Its general

purpose is to support the advancement of research and understanding in the major fields of the social sciences. Its specific purpose is to provide small grants to aspiring PhD students at the dissertation level to support the research they are undertaking for their project. Grants are based solely on merit. Each is worth a total of $7,500; $5,000 is awarded initially and $2,500 upon completion of the project.

Louisville Institute Dissertation Fellowship on North American Christianity The Dissertation Fellowship program is designed to support the final year Ph.D. or Th.D. dissertation writing for students engaged in research pertaining to North

American Christianity, especially projects with the potential to strengthen the religious

life of North American Christians and their institutions, including seminaries, while simultaneously advancing American religious and theological scholarship. Proposed

projects may employ a variety of methodological perspectives, including, but not limited

to, history, ethics, the social sciences, biblical studies, and historical, systematic, and practical theology. They may also be interdisciplinary in nature.

Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources: General

Fellowships The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities or related social sciences using original sources. The purposes of this fellowship program are to: help junior scholars in the humanities and related social sciences gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources; enable dissertation writers to do research wherever relevant sources may be, rather than just where financial support is available; encourage more extensive and

innovative uses of original sources in libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and related repositories in the U.S. and abroad; and capture insights into how scholarly resources can be developed for access most helpfully in the future.

NSF Biological Anthropology Program-Doctoral Dissertation Research

Improvement Grants (BA-DDRIG)

The Biological Anthropology Program supports multifaceted research to advance

scientific knowledge of human biology and ecology, including understanding of our

evolutionary history and mechanisms that have shaped human and nonhuman primate

biological diversity. This solicitation specifically addresses the preparation and

evaluation of proposals for such Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement (DDRI)

Grants. Dissertation research projects in all of the subareas of biological anthropology

are eligible for support through these grants. These awards are intended to enhance and

improve the conduct of dissertation research by doctoral students who are pursuing

research in biological anthropology that enhances basic scientific knowledge.

Peter K. New Award The Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) announces an annual student research competition in the applied social and behavioral sciences. The first-place winner of the Competition will receive a cash prize of $3,000 as well as $350 to partially offset the cost of transportation and two nights lodging at the annual meeting of the Society. In addition, the winner receives an engraved crystal trophy. The award honors the late Peter Kong-ming New, a distinguished medical sociologist-anthropologist and former president of the SfAA. The award will be given to the best paper which reports on an applied research project in the social/behavioral sciences. The USF Ricci Institute is a premier global resource for the study of Chinese-Western cultural exchange with a core focus on the social and cultural history of Christianity in China. Besides its more than 80,000 volumes of books in Chinese and Western

Soros Equality Fellowship The Open Society-U.S.’s Equality team seeks applicants for its Soros Equality Fellowship, which aims to support emerging mid-career professionals who will become

AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program This highly competitive program strengthens the connections between scientists and

journalists by placing advanced undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate level

scientists, engineers and mathematicians at media organizations nationwide. Fellows

have worked as reporters, editors, researchers, and production assistants at such media

outlets as the Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, The Washington Post, WIRED,

and Scientific American. The Mass Media Fellows use their academic training in the

sciences as they research, write and report today's headlines, sharpening their abilities

to communicate complex scientific issues to non-specialists. Participants come in

knowing the importance of translating their work for the public, but they leave with the

tools and the know-how to accomplish this important goal. For 10 weeks during the

summer, the AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows collaborate with media

professionals at radio and television stations, newspapers, and magazines. As part of

their job, the student-scientists and their host-journalists strive to make science news

CDC Diagnostic and Reference Laboratory Fellowship

A research opportunity is currently available with the Diagnostic and Reference team in the Bacterial Diseases Branch within the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases (DVBD), of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Diagnostic and Reference Team is responsible for public health and research activities aimed at diagnosis and characterization of vector-borne bacterial diseases, including Lyme disease, relapsing fever, plague, and tularemia. The selected participant will be involved in a variety of activities related to improving diagnosis of these diseases. The

IDEA WILD Conservation Research Equipment Grants IDEA WILD seeks to minimize the loss of biodiversity by empowering people on the

front lines of conservation by awarding small equipment grants to conservation

professionals around the world. These equipment grants advance biological research,

conservation education, community outreach, conservation management, field training,

and professional development in areas where it is needed most. By empowering both

aspiring and veteran conservation professionals, IDEA WILD has been instrumental in

establishing new protected areas, reversing the decline of species through innovative

(SOS DDRIG) The Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants funding opportunity is

Minority Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Teachers College, Columbia University, is the largest and most comprehensive graduate

school of education in the United States. Its programs span education, psychology and health fields.
