Course Goals

During each unit, students will explore the elements of effective writing, read and analyze fiction and nonfiction, and develop reading strategies. They will examine literature from the perspective of a writer and use their study of literature to improve their own writing and vocabulary through a variety of activities. Utilizing mentor sentences, grammatical structures will be analyze. A portfolio to demonstrate their growth reading, writing, language, viewing, speaking, and listening.

RemediationIf students do not master a standard, they will have the opportunity to attend tutoring sessions. Summative writing assignments can be revised and resubmitted within one week of the written assignment being returned. Students will have the opportunity to improve summative test scores. If student does better, the old grade will be replaced.

Language Arts Journal Students should have a 3-subject notebook (plastic covers are recommended used strictly for language arts. Students must be prepared to have their journal in class every day. I will provide a place to keep the notebook in the classroom. This notebook will serve as the textbook and interactive notebook for 6th grade language arts.

Web Page and Weekly NewsletterStudents and parents can keep up to date with upcoming due dates, resources, and handouts by visiting Mrs. McBride’s Web page on the school website. I will also send a Weekly Newsletter to help you keep current with our assignments.

Late Work PolicyAll assignments are expected to be completed in full and on time. Students will lose 5 points each day the assignment is late. After the sixth day the highest grade that a student can earn is a 60 (exceptions are absences, illness, or family emergencies). Students who fail to turn in work on time will have their efforts accurately reflected in their grades and work habits.

TutoringTutoring is offered Wednesdays @ 7:45 AM. Students must sign up by Tuesday afternoon and have specific questions.
