NEWSLETTER FROM THE DESK OF MR TAGG

Dear Parents. Welcome to the final newsletter of 2018 It’s hard to believe that yet another year has come to an end. 2018 has been a very special year for 345 and CHP. Malcom X said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” And our children have been thoroughly prepared this year. 2018 saw the arrival of our Grade 7 children. When I started at 345 and CHP in 2014 these young ladies and gentlemen were in Grade 3! Our 345 children have had an amazing year once again, to come to school every day and to see their happy, beaming faces is a true delight and looking back through the year, to see how they have all grown and matured is truly special. They have enjoyed so many exciting experiences and learning opportunities and they have developed special friendships.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the 345 and CHP staff for all their hard work this year. Whether it has been at the front gate keeping us safe, or ensuring our campuses are always pristine to assisting in the Nursery School classes, or teaching sport on the field or academics in the classroom, or administration in the office, every single person plays a vital part to the success of our special family of schools. Parents, thank you too for your continued support and for trusting us to grow your children, we are deeply cognizant of this huge responsibility. I wish you all a wonderful holiday and the very best for 2019. Regards

I hope you enjoy our final newsletter for 2018. I have had a ball using the photos we have taken to share our special memories but more importantly, we have all had fun making these memories. Memories like these will last forever!

And so, the “Silly Season” has begun. Who is fooling who…our silly season lasts the whole year and that is exactly how it should be!

Revising our Thinking Maps…Tools we introduce to the children to improve their Thinking Skills and expand their knowledge.

The Grade 1s have worked hard this term, and they are

more than ready for Grade 2. They love Artwork and all

their pieces they have created are beautiful. We have been

learning about houses and homes in Life Skills and they

painted their homes with water colours. The pirate art was

done in pastel, this was one of their favourite creations.

The children of Grade 1J had so much fun this year. Here are some of their

favorite things.

The year is almost over and I can’t believe it is almost time to say goodbye to my class. They have all grown so much over the year and I have loved teaching all of them. This final term has been all about preparing the children for Grade 3. They have worked hard and deserve the December holidays coming up! In English, we have continued reinforcing the different language concepts taught this year. The children were also given the task of writing and illustrating their own story books. They really enjoyed being authors and lots of laughs were shared when they read their stories out loud to the class. The children, in their respective reading groups, chose a story from their readers and had to role-play and act out the story. Lots of fun was had by all. In Mathematics, the children learnt about Capacity, Mass and Length. Practical lessons are the most enjoyable as the kids love the hands-on experience of working with trundle wheels, and different measuring instruments. We still practice our counting skills every day and the children are improving daily. South Africa and the Different Ways We Can Communicate were our themes for Life Skills this month. The children loved learning more about South Africa and even managed to recreate the flag’s V shape. Learning about Braille and Sign Language was also a big hit with the kids. This year has gone by very quickly and I just want to wish all my learners and their parents a well-deserved holiday and all the best for next year!

Maths We approached our concepts using practical illustrations. Concepts in measurement, fractions, money and decomposition were tackled. The learners executed their tasks with such eagerness and the outcome was amazing. Each group had to simulate a classroom set up and teach the concepts after our lessons. They integrated their thinking maps and hats into their “lesson plan”.

English: The skill of writing and speaking were our main objectives for this month. Learners were given titles to write their own stories by applying all learnt concepts from Parts of Speech to Figures of Speech and the basics of story writing. Each child compiled their own book taking on the role of an author and illustrator. Their stories encapsulated their active imagination, their increasing vocabulary and their creative illustration skills. We continued with our new Big Cat readers and learners were challenged in extending the story and creating their own script to act out the story.

Life Skills: We travelled into the world of communication exploring the past and modern forms of communication. Learners were introduced to Sign Language, Braille and the Morse Code. They had fun using these modes of communication with each other in class.

And so, we reach the end of the year and our final newsletter.

In Maths this month we learnt about Area and Perimeter and how to calculate these on different shapes. We are doing lots of revision to make sure that we are ready for Grade 4.

In English we are still having fun with reading, learning new vocabulary and writing sentences. The more we read the better our reading gets and the easier it will be to learn new things.

In Life Skills we have been learning about products and processes: where sugar, bricks and chocolate comes from. We got to use Kiddle to research these products and used the information to make an eBook.

Snack time is always fun, and it is very important for us to build our relationships with each other.

GRADE 3 Y

In Life Skills, we have focused on different product processes and how raw items are

transformed into final products like cheese, wool, paper and cotton. The Grade 3s were tasked with researching a specific process,

creating an e-book which highlights the sequence of events and presenting the

manufacturing process to the class. Finding all the relevant information was a huge task, but

Grade 3Y managed, presenting interesting presentations.

With a month to go before school closes, Grade 3Y has been hard at work revising

Maths skills, successfully completing some rather challenging projects.

The class was introduced to the concept of

Area and Perimeter and have enjoyed determining the dimensions of various

items from their spelling words to their own robots.

We are loving our new interactive Smart Board.

MUSIC

Reflecting on the achievements the Music Department had since the beginning of the year, it is heart-warming and encouraging to state that our learners, from Grade 00-7, have learnt skills that will enable them to play as soloists or in an ensemble. They can play an instrument, learn songs aurally and are taught music theory. Furthermore, reading music notation starts at Grade 2. Playing in an ensemble is emphasized through class music. As such, children learn to play together, listen to each other, develop perseverance with each other, and most importantly, boost team skills. This approach to music education has encouraged some of the children to compose their own music as well as, figure out songs of their interest from the internet. Their aural perception has grown exceptionally. Music enriches the learners’ lives and education. Learning to play pieces of music on a new instrument can be challenging, but achievable. Learners who master even the smallest goal in music will be able to feel proud of their achievement. As mentioned in the previous newsletters, next year, the Music Department is introducing a Saturday music program whereby learners will learn instruments such as guitar, saxophone, flute, trumpet and voice. We hope that as parents, you will give us support in building the music program with the aim of establishing an orchestra in the future. Thanking you for your continuous support.
