Home LetterDear Family,This week we will ask the question “Why do people pass down stories over the years?” In the tall tale Stormalong, students will read about how the sailors in Cape Cod help a very unusual sailor. Students will also read the folktale Hoderi, the Fisherman, about a fisherman who tries to help his brother catch fish.

Go to the eBook to read and listen to this week’s selection.

Activities to Do Together

VocabularyPlay a guessing game with your child. Look up one of this week’s Target Vocabulary in a dictionary and read the definition out loud. See if your child can guess which word fits the definition.

Map It OutIn Stormalong, Stormy travels from Cape Cod to Kansas. Using a map, discuss with your child the route Stormy might have taken. Help your child estimate how many miles the journey may have been.

An Animal’s Adventure Encourage your child to write a fictional story about an animal from the sea. Read the story aloud and let your child know what you find most enjoyable about it. Discuss ways that he or she could make the story even better, and have your child revise the story based on your discussion.

This week’s…Target Vocabulary: yearning, memorable, betrayed, condition, seafaring, shortage, tidal, outcast, foaming, horrified

Who Is Stormalong?Take turns reading the dialogue with a partner. Using Target Vocabulary Words, tell your partner what the dialogue is about.

Reporter: Many of you may wonder who the tall, sea-loving

giant is. Well, today, we get to find out more about Alfred

Bulltop Stormalong. Hello, Stormalong! How did the

people of Cape Cod find you?

Stormalong: They heard the sound of the tidal waves crash.

When they got to the beach, there I was!

Reporter: You are very different from the people around

you. Have you ever felt like an outcast?

Stormalong: Yes, I have. It is hard to be huge and not like

everyone else.

Reporter: What is your most memorable story of the sea?

Stormalong: Once, when the anchor of our ship wouldn’t

come up, the captain let me go get it. A giant octopus was

holding onto it, but I grabbed the anchor anyway. That

octopus was horrified.

Reporter: I understand you once caused a lumber shortage?

Can you tell us about that?

Stormalong: My seafaring friends built me a ship! It had to

be a giant ship. They used all the lumber for miles

around.

Reporter: Well, Mr. Stormalong, that was a pleasure, but

I think we are out of time. Thanks for meeting with

me today!
