Kimmy Cantrell Faces – Recyclable Art ProjectKimmy Cantrell is a 21st century contemporary artist who uses clay to create collage style faces and vases. This is one of his creations.

He uses asymmetry (unevenness) to challenge traditional definitions of beauty. “I want to show the beauty within flaws,” he explains. “Imperfections tell stories that are far more compelling than perfection.”

The video will help to make your own creation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmx09KZ-YGI

You are going to create your own Cantrell face using recycled materials. Below are some examples to help guide your creation.

Materials:

Recycled materials (cardboard, plastic lids, egg cartons, paper, etc.)

Liquid glue or hot glue

Markers/paint/ crayons/ pastels

Scissors

Steps:

1) Design your face on a blank piece of paper to figure out what shapes you will need, materials you will need, what colors you will use and what will make it asymmetrical.

2) Build your face using the materials you have gathered. Should have a 3D effect to it. Use liquid/hot glue to attach pieces.

3) Once glue has dried, colour your face using markers/paint/crayons/pastels. Be creative and unique. 4) Take a picture, post to classroom website and record/write about what you did to create your art.

Grade 4/5 Music Assignment

For this week’s assignment we will be learning the “Cups” song that many of you may know from the movie Pitch Perfect. The first step is to grab a cup (but not a glass one!) and learn the pattern.

Here is a video that teaches the cups pattern:https://youtu.be/RZf_joR1Srk

Or if you don’t have access to youtube you can follow these steps:

Try singing the song! You can also listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/cmSbXsFE3l8

Page 24: Grade 4-5 Home Learning Package 2  · Web viewThe video will help to make your own creation: https: ... 5 Music Assignment. For this week’s assignment we will be learning the “Cups”

Here are the lyrics:

I got my ticket for the long way 'roundTwo bottle 'a whiskey for the wayAnd I sure would like some sweet companyAnd I'm leaving tomorrow, wha-do-ya say?

When I'm goneWhen I'm goneYou're gonna miss me when I'm goneYou're gonna miss me by my hairYou're gonna miss me everywhere, ohYou're gonna miss me when I'm gone

I've got my ticket for the long way 'roundThe one with the prettiest of viewsIt's got mountains, it's got rivers, it's got sights to give you shiversBut it sure would be prettier with you

When I'm goneWhen I'm goneYou're gonna miss me when I'm goneYou're gonna miss me by my walkYou're gonna miss me by my talk, ohYou're gonna miss me when I'm gone

If you have access to the technology, make a recording of yourself playing the cups pattern and send it to Ms. Nicholson or Mrs. Neufeld at [email protected] or [email protected]. If you want an extra challenge, try playing the pattern and singing the song at the same time!!

Ms. Nicholson made a special video for you of her own version of the Cups Song! Check it out here:

EARLY YEARS PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES FOR APRIL 13-17, 2020Hi All,

As was mentioned in the You Tube video, we will be picking up where we left off in March when we were using racquets in class to develop eye hand coordination with striking skills.

TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 2020 GRADE 3-5 STUDENTS

Warm Up Activity:

We will warm up with a sorting activity. I wonder if you have 10 items that look similar to one another in your home???

For example, 10 RED Lego blocks and 10 ORANGE Lego blocks OR

10 little dinosaurs and 10 little animals OR

10 Pokemon cards and 10 Hockey cards. I hope you have an idea of what I mean.

This is a sorting relay to get you warmed up. You will place the 20 items all together in a pile so that they get mixed up together. Then you can place 2 bowls about 10 feet away from the pile of objects. When you are ready, you will take one object from the pile and run it to one of the bowls. One bowl will be ONLY for the red lego blocks, and the second bowl will be for the orange yellow blocks (or whatever items you chose). The moving from pile to bowls will allow you to get your heart pumping, and the placement of the objects in specific bowls will help with eye hand coordination.

Practicing your striking skills

I wonder if you have a balloon somewhere in the house? If yes, blow it up. If not, you can always blow some air into a Ziploc bag. If you don’t have those handy, just a simple shopping bag will do. To get started, let’s try some simple tricks to keep the balloon up and off the floor.

Can you tap the balloon 5 times in the air? Can you tap it 10 times? If that is too easy then try to see what your record is? I have a feeling some of you can keep that balloon up in the air for quite a while. You might not even be able to count that high…perhaps you will have to time it with a stopwatch.

Let’s use both sides of our body and our brain now….can you tap the balloon from one had to the other without letting the balloon touch the ground?

Next one is pretty challenging…can you stand in one spot without moving your feet at all, and tap the balloon as many times as you can????

Can we add movement and a challenge at the same time? I think you can…stand about 3 feet away from a wall, or chair, or bed…whatever you choose. Start by popping the balloon up, then quickly move to the object you chose, TOUCH IT, and get back to the first spot to tap the balloon up again. I would love to see you do this one…if your mom or dad could send me a video, that would be great!!!

Good job grade 3-5’s….keep your balloon for Wednesday and Thursday as well. Have a great day!!

Wednesday, April 15, 2020 K-5 ACTIVITIY

Let’s Build a Racquet

As I mentioned in my You Tube video, on Wednesday we will all build something that will help us practice our skills.

Today’s task is to build a racquet. You will need 2 paper plates, a stick or ruler and some tape.

Start by taping the ruler to the INSIDE of ONE plate. Make sure there is enough tape connecting the ruler to the plate as you will be using the racquet to try to strike a few objects.

When you feel that the plate is secured to the inside of the plate, then you can place the other plate on top and tape both plates together. You should see the outside of the plates on each side of the racquet. If you feel like your racquet is secure, now you can start using it!

Where is your balloon from Monday? Is your racquet strong enough to hit the balloon up several times?

Roll up a sock and see if you can move the sock on the floor with your racquet that has now become a hockey stick…keep you eyes on the sock, but also look up to watch where you are going.

What other objects can you keep up or move with your racquet???

I sure hope you enjoyed being creative. Send me videos or pictures of your new racquet at [email protected].

THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 2020 GRADE 3-5 STUDENTS

Warm up activity:

This is another eye hand coordination activity, but you can also add some strengthening to it….

Take a deck of cards and place the 13 different cards face up in front of you. You may want to make a few rows….first row the Ace, two, three and four card. Second row…5,6,7,8 and 9

Third Row…10, Jack, Queen and King.

With the rest of the cards, leave them in a pile FACE DOWN. You can place the pile about 5 feet away from the cards that are FACE UP. When you are ready, you will move the remaining 39 cards one at a time to their correct location. To start, take the first card from the top of the pile, look at it. If it’s a 5, run to the face up cards and place your 5 on top of the other 5. Run back and take another card from the deck. If it’s a KING, run and place it onto the king.

Practicing striking skills

Go back to some of the things you did on Tuesday. The last thing you did was add movement to your striking skills. Can you start with that activity just to get your feet, eyes and hands all working together.

Now you can move up to another challenge. Using some tape (not duct tape) can you make a net or some type of object that will not be touching the ground. High enough to be able to duck under it (I used chairs to stick each end of the tape to). Now, can you tap the balloon up quite high so that you can duck under to the other side of the string and catch the balloon. You will need to think about angles so that the balloon stays close to the net or even can get over the net to make it wasy enough to catch.

Page 29: Grade 4-5 Home Learning Package 2  · Web viewThe video will help to make your own creation: https: ... 5 Music Assignment. For this week’s assignment we will be learning the “Cups”

When this get easy enough, you may want to take the catch away and see if you can just tap the balloon from side to side, with the duck in between.

To cool off after all that work, maybe you and a family member can just tap the balloon over to one another, like a volleyball game.

DON’T FORGET…..YOU CAN USE THE RACQUET YOU MADE THE OTHER DAY. These activities would be SUPER challenging using a racquet…good luck!!!! Again, I would love to see how things went so feel free to send me a video or photo at [email protected].
