Section A1: Reading

Sometimes It Takes Two

1 “Don’t forget your lunch, Rory,” her mother called as Rory was set to leave. Rory

stopped in her tracks. She grabbed her lunch and had a second thought.

“Where’s my homework?” she wondered aloud, rummaging through her

backpack.

2 Back upstairs she trudged, her shoes landing heavily on each step. She collected

her homework and then noticed she had forgotten to make her bed. She pulled

the covers up and headed downstairs again.

3 “Do you need this?” asked her mother, holding Rory’s neatly folded baseball

uniform.

4 “No,” replied Rory quickly. “Baseball is Tuesday. This is … this is Tuesday!” She

grabbed the uniform and stuffed it into her backpack. “There’s so much to

remember. How do you do it, Mom?”

5 “Rory,” said her mother, “look at this list.” Tuesday: 1. Call the plumber. 2. Go to Rory’s game. 3. Give Rory money for school trip. 4. Take Evan to choir practice..

6

7 “You

just need a memory tool. This is mine. Every night, I make a list of what I have to

do the next day. Maybe I could help you write one tonight.”

8 When her mom got home from work that night, Rory ran to her. “You know how I

have a school agenda? Well, Dad put a whiteboard up on the fridge for me to use

as my home agenda. It’s just like our homework board at school. Dad helped me

write my to-do list for the whole week , — check it out!” Rory said proudly.

9 “Hey,” said her mom, “you’ve even got ‘thank Mom’ here with a big heart. What’s

that for?”

10 “For getting me organized. Now I won’t forget anything.”

’Round and ’Round

Bury me dark,

bury me deep.

Let me lie

awhile, asleep.

Let my root

stretch out, uncoil,

sifting, goodness

from the soil.

Let me push

my small shoot where

it reaches up

to light and air.

Leaves uncrinkle,

one by one,

soaking up

warm rays of sun,

so that soil

and light and air

help me grow,

at last to bear

a flower that brings

the fumbling bee

to store bright pollen

at his knee …

and so the flower

becomes a fruit

that holds a seed

that grows a shoot

which, helped by soil

and sun and rain,

begins the cycle

once again,

as life goes slowly

’round and ’round

on Nature’s strange,

amazing ground.

Section B1: ReadingBuilding Nests Is for the Birds1 Have you ever looked closely at a bird’s nest? Birds are some of nature’s best

builders. They can take a beakful of twigs, mud and grass and construct a home meant to keep their eggs and hatchlings safe. What’s more, they can build one just about anywhere.

2 You will often spot robins, for example, in towns and cities. They nest in backyards, parks and even school grounds. They prefer to live in trees, but if none are available, they might build nests under the edge of a roof, on top of a ladder or inside a big umbrella on a picnic table. You will sometimes see bits of wool, string or cloth built into their nests.

3 Ravens usually live on rocky cliffs or in the branches of tall trees. They weave their large nests out of sticks and twigs, and line them with mud, fur, bark and grass. But when they live near people, ravens also know how to adapt. They build their nests on telephone poles, bridges and even billboards. And, like robins, they sometimes weave scraps of wire, paper and other trash into them.

4 Tiny warblers prefer to live in holes in trees. They fill these with twigs, dry leaves and moss to protect their eggs. Where a tree cavity is not available, warblers have been spotted nesting in a toolbox, a coffee can, and even the pocket of an old coat.

5 No matter where they live, birds are clever when it comes to preparing homes for their young.
