Section A1 Reading
Bye-Bye, Broccoli
1 Lanny opened his lunch bag and pulled out a container of raw broccoli.
2 “Oh, not again,” he groaned, tossing it back into his bag.
3 “‘Not again?’ What do you mean?” asked his teacher.
4 Lanny retrieved the container of broccoli. “This. My mom gives me broccoli
nearly every day. I think she’s trying to turn me into a giant piece of
broccoli!”
5 Ms. Patel laughed. “I think green will look good on you.” That made Lanny
smile.
6 Ari was sitting across the table. “I get broccoli too, but my mom gives me a
creamy hummus dip to make the broccoli taste better,” he said.
7 Nodding her head, Ms. Patel said, “That sounds delicious. And look at
Janet over there. She’s eating it with cheese slices. Cheese is great with
broccoli.”
8 “My dad often puts cheese sauce on cooked broccoli, and broccoli’s tasty
in a soup,” added Janet, popping a piece into her mouth.
9 “I’m not sure I want to eat food that looks like little trees,” Lanny said,
making a face.
10 “Do you remember what we learned in health class about dark green
vegetables?” Ms. Patel asked.
11 “That they’re good for our bones and our heart?” guessed Lanny.
12 “And have vitamins C and K,” added Ari.
13 “Exactly, and Janet’s combination adds more calcium and protein, which
helps you develop muscle,” added Ms. Patel. “It’s a powerhouse
combination!”
14 Lanny cried, “Plus the cheese and broccoli are orange and green, just like
the colours of my hockey team. And we are a powerhouse of a team. So
maybe…”
15 “So,” said Janet, holding out a piece of broccoli and cheese, “is it still bye-
bye, broccoli?”

Section B1 Reading
Exploring Desert Cacti
1 Cactus plants are able to survive where few other plants can , —in dry
deserts. These often prickly plants come in a wide range of shapes and
sizes, and many kinds even produce flowers!
2 Like all living things, cacti need water. But the rain that falls in the desert
is often light and brief, and the soil dries out rapidly. Fortunately, cacti
have several different ways that allow them to conserve water to survive
in harsh conditions.
3 For example, most cacti have roots that are long and thin. Instead of
growing deep down into the soil, the roots spread out near the surface in
order to absorb water from a wide area. Then the stem of the cactus
plant actually swells to store water for later use. Cacti also have a waxy
coating on their surface that helps to prevent water loss.
4 In addition, cacti have spines or thorns instead of leaves. These help to keep away
thirsty animals looking for a drink. However, some animals , like the bighorn sheep,
and antelope ground squirrel, rely on cacti as a source of food and water.
5 Some birds use the spines of a cactus plant to their advantage. These include the
cactus wren and California thrasher, who build their nests on cacti and use the
spines for protection from foxes, coyotes and other birds. Other birds use their
beaks to chop holes into the long arms of some cacti to make a home inside.
6 It is clear that these odd-looking plants are an important part of their environment!
